¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The March release of this ROM has been absolutely outstanding. Android Auto works with my vehicle using Mindthegapps OOTB, face unlock is fast and battery life is spectacular. This is all I run on my phone now and I appreciate the builds. I hope other users are trying it out!

For clarification do I need to install lineage os 17.1 or can i go straight from android 11 to install this rom ? Also if I want to install a custom kernel build is it possible to do that after installing this rom and how? Sorry havent installed a custom rom since my HTC one M8 and Galaxy S2 Active lol.
Thanks

You can go straight to LOS 18.1 from Android 11. Follow the instructions in the OP and installing custom kernels is the same way as installing the ROM. From the Lineage recovery you will do the sideloading with the kernel you want to install. Instructions may differ with different custom kernels but the part where you actually flash the kernel is flashed the same way the ROM, Gapps and Magisk are all flashed.

I'm unsure why as the first step to install LOS is to overwrite the boot.img from March (as seen in the step where you overwrite both slots) with the Lineage Boot image. Because I'm not a dev and have only a moderately competent view of how it works I would say install the March image to your device first and then move to LOS. That way all the tertiary partitions, like the modem, will be updated for the March release. Then you will definitely be ready to go for the March Release of LOS.

I am remembering that when I installed a custom rom some years back on my m8 that I may have done that, he doesnt include it in the steps, so one of the devs got back in telegram ; they update all the partitions manually so you can install from boot.img though like you said for most other roms you need to install latest release prior to.

They are referring to the March factory firmware, but not the LOS March update (ROM). The ROM (LOS) includes everything needed to run the OS and have service. You just need to be on the right firmware.

Is this better than stock and really worth it?
Obviously this is subjective but I think it has all the things that makes stock really good with better battery life and app functionality for me as long as you add the Google packages you need. Also, it's open source LoS so that makes it better in my opinion.

If you're looking for a bunch of extra features like Resurrection Remix or something similar then no, this isn't that. Just a really stable, open-source, stock-like experience having a few extra features with excellent tweaks that translate to a better experience for me.

Does it have the Google call screening?

It does. I just installed Google Phone from the Play Store, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps and assign phone to Google Phone. Launch the app and it asked immediately if I wanted to turn it on or it can be found in the Google Phone settings. Using Mindthegapps linked in the OP as the base Gapps install, I don't know if it will work using other Gapps packages.

Official builds are now available for downloading. The migration process from my unofficial builds is as follows:

    1. Download the latest version of Lineage OS and the lineage recovery image for your device from here.
    2. Reboot to bootloader
    3. Flash the recovery image to your boot partition (fastboot flash --slot all boot /path/to/recovery.img)
    4. Reboot into recovery
    5. Flash the official build of Lineage OS (adb sideload lineage.zip)
    6. If you have gapps installed, reboot to recovery again and ensure you flash gapps again before booting into Lineage OS
    7. Reboot your phone and enjoy!

If you are coming from a previous version of Lineage OS, please refer to the wiki.

  • Updated from the unofficial builds and all running smoothly.

Thanks for all your work. 👌
Awesome so no full rebuild needed? I was hoping someone reported this exact note. I usually had issues going from unofficial to official LOS on my 2XL, so I wanted to wait and see how it went for others on the 4XL (this ROM). I'm definitely jumping to LOS 18.1 now that it's official and LOS supported (18.1). The unofficial worked AWESOME so don't get me wrong, but I'm more of an official type guy for my daily drivers. I only tested LOS but will move over shortly from PD11.

Instead of flashing the original recovery in the first place (step 3) and eventually flashing a custom kernel / Magisk later on it works well to go with magisk_patched.img right from the beginning.

LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 11.0, which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.

LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

All the source code for LineageOS is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to LineageOS, please visit out Gerrit Code Review. You can also view the changelog for a full list of changes & features.

      2. Reboot to bootloader
      3. Flash the provided boot.img to both slots (fastboot flash --slot all boot boot.img)
      4. Reboot into recovery and factory reset for initial install
      5. Sideload the latest build of Lineage OS (adb sideload lineage.zip)

      Lineage OS 18.1 (20/1/21)

      • January ASB
      • Fixed inconsistent gapps install behaviour due to virtual a/b
      • Added the ability to reboot to fastbootd from advanced restart options
      • Various bug fixes and improvements
Thank you for tolerating the frustrating gapps installation issues on the last build. This substantially delayed this months update but I'm pleased to finally be able to provide one with this fixed. Gapps installation should consistently work now.
