Just want to say thank all of you so much for keeping the N9 in the 14.1 LOS loop. It's been running spectacular, no glitches whatsoever.

so is it just worth it to have the lineage 14.1 on the device.if so what gapps to use .as i used the bank gaps and got a bootloop on my nexus 9 LTE and had to restore to stock an so i am wondering on how to go about flashing lineage 14.1 on the nexus 9 LTE with out having another bootloop after the entire proces has been completed .i have never had the issue of flashing roms to other devices in the past. just this one has issues when flashing lineage rom.

You must format data from twrp and then flash a non-encrypting ROM or a custom kernel.
Formatting data will cancel every file from your device.
Install fed_patcher v8 zip from recovery after installing lineage zip. You need to do this every time you update lineage.

who is the current maintainer of the nexus 9 LTe model.will that get a 15.1 or not.
I didn't think any nexus9 was supported by 15.1. I thought the attempts to reliably port Android 8 had been unsuccessful.

I see there is an unofficial port of Android 9 (lineage 16) to the nexus9. Has anyone tried it.

My Nexus9 has never been good. Sluggish using OTA. Better using Pure Nexus. Sluggish still using Lineage 14.

I'm pondering seeing if its any better using this unofficial lineage 16.

There is much better solution than fed_patcher : https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389
especially on nexus9 works fine

"much better" in which regard? It appears it needs to be installed, from recovery, each time a new lineage is installed. same end result. maybe it's a cleaner implementation but I'm not seeing, from an end-user perspective, why it's "much better". when making such claims, it's helpful to provide some rationale to aid readers.

Actually official LOS with Fire Ice kernel works pretty good.
It seems it's only getting update releases every 6 months? Is this correct? If so, that's not great from a patch/security perspective.

Also, sluggish performance isn't the only issue with my N9, frequent lockups also. The last page of the Fire Ice thread on here are full of reports of no improvement to this when using Fire/Ice.

I'd give Pie a try but the original Flounder binary blobs are so old now who knows how well that integration will even work, it didn't for Oreo. It's probably time for a new tablet (as much as I hate to do it since it's basically a non-essential media toy).

The N9 was a poor tablet from the getgo. I was very disappointed coming from the N7. The current Android tablet offerings are depressing.

The tablet market has been killed by iPad and mobiles screen getting bigger time by time.
The nicest tablet I ever held in my hands is xiaomi mipad 2.
An iPad clone with Intel Atom CPU.
But there is basically no development at all.
It still run on CM 13.

There is no point in replacing a tablet at the present day. If you are looking for a big screen, I would give a try to xiaomi mi max 3 (6.9" screen, big battery, good SoC, treble enabled).

N9 is a good device that has been shipped to the market with 64bit ARM CPU and data encryption. Both solutions affected heavily the device performance.

My two cents.

There are many reasons why the performance could be poor. I work in Linux performance analysis. It's complex.

Fact is that without encryption the N9 performance is still poor. It could be issues with the toolchain (64 bit) and also with the relatively small amount of RAM. It could be any number of issues.

If I wanted to root the device, install the necessary analysis tools and spend significant time I could probably get a much better idea of what is going on but as I said, the Nexus 9, FOR ME, is a device for consuming media. I want something that just works and lets me relax. I'll leave performance analysis to the day job.

My work laptop is a MacBook Retina Pro running Linux (reason: the Apple build quality is top-notch). An iPad sounds great except for the the price, the closed eco-system and the UI. If the 10" Huawei MediaPad M3 Lite had aftermarket ROM support (for long term AOSP updates) I'd probably try one of these. They are cheap enough that I won't feel bad sticking the N9 onto a shelf. No way I'm burning $$$ on a Pixel tablet and I refuse to buy Samsung.

I only had a decent performance when I got rid of encryption.
Device is mostly used for web browsing and media playing/streaming, no gaming at all.
ZRAM disabled and over clocked using ElementalX kernel.

10" are a really big estate to manage.
I also use an Android tvbox for film/tv.
It is an honest, sturdy tablet and nothing else. People had only a lot of expectations from a Nexus device.

I don't play games. Reading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, WaPo), reading eBooks/PDFs, webbrowsing, shopping apps (eBay, aliExpress), Youtube. Nothing major.

The N9 performance is laggy with frequent lock ups. I'm very aware that for many the performance is ok and for others it's not. Without performing a detailed performance analysis it's pointless to really talk about the issue as there are so many variables that could be a factor.

I've no clue how to reply to your expectations comment. The above isn't what I'd consider Power usage. I thought the Nexus 7 was a fantastic performing tablet.

10" is indeed large but I like to read technical PDFs.

More or less is the same here, but I don't get lags or freezes since ages.
It could be due to the custom kernel or the lack of multitasking. Who knows :D

N9 is not a poor device, this is my opinion :)

Certainly, a different Kconfig may help. As I said before, lots of hard lockup reports on that Fire/Ice thread and I'd feel a lot more comfortable if the Fire/Ice kernel was more regularly updated with AOSP kernel updates (CVEs). Based on my quick review, it's being updated every 6 months.

I do have a bad habit of letting multiple tasks stack up rather than killing idle apps.
