I was on LOS 18.1 and formatted data and factory wiped before flashing. I have now used Odin to flash BUF3 stock, vbmeta and TWRP.

you might need update to latest frimware with odin as the lineage os is build for older type firmwere between release of it and samsung had phew update

BTW, what timing on the buttons do you use to boot TWRP? On every other Tab A, I just hold vol up till second screen with red warning appears, but on this one I have to keep trying many times to get it to work.

Yes its tricky i plug mine into pc seems ro work better to get twrp

Plugging into PC gets me to TWRP. Flashed the latest stock from Frija via Odin, then vbmeta, TWRP, formatted data and factory wipe. Then flash this ROM and Magisk23.apk. Everything appears to be working. Thanks.
