I tried susbtratum but there are no friendly guides on how to actually use substratum. What are you supposed to install? There are so many options. Android system, System UI, System notifications. I played around and installed some free themes but it just wasn't working out. I would get some settings but then when I click on a setting category settings are black/not visible.

P.S. I'm using stock ROM. I don't think that should matter right?

it's rather frustrating. Everyone just says use substratum, use substratum but I still don't know how to use it properly. It be great if anyone knew a friendly link or care to explain basics of substratum. I had to go back to TWRP because I got bootlooped using substratum.

Ok so here is the guide for substratum.
You are using stock android and lenovo firmware don't support substratum. You must root your device and give substratum su permission to use it. And i thing you have already rooted the device so i recommend to using swiftblack theme for substratum. After download the theme open substratum and choose swift black and choose android version as other and then tick those apps you want to theme. Since you are on stock so many things don't work. Tick only those apps you have installed not system setting like android system, system ui etc.
I recommend applying 3-4 apps at a time and reboot your device And see what's working or not. If anything goes wrong just reboot in twrp and flash substratum rescue legacy zip. It will automatically uninstall any theme apply by substratum.

So what do I theme then? just the android option? I am rooted. I'll give it another try. this time with the zip file in the SD card. You said legacy is that because I'm in stock rom? I hear there are two zip. One is legacy and one not legacy. Thanks

Lenovo firmware have limitations so you can't theme all of the things. If you really want customization then i suggest you to install rom which support OMS. You can flash lineage, it doesn't support OMS but in legacy mod mod you can themes almost anything and it's better then stock.

Lineage doesn't work with China Telecomm. There are only a handful of ROMS that work with my network and I just didn't like them because they don't have LED notifications and Fingerprint. I just installed a launcher to get rid of app names and change icon pack. I'm happy with that. I can't do much more with a custom ROM. Thanks for the reply though. I did change the kernel to magma though.

I think it's important to note that ROMs may not work with your device simply because of the network being used. I had to learn this the hard way but now I know. I have stock ROM with root access and Magisks. I have Youtube REd so that's something. lol. Lenovo p2 is great still. Can't complain and i've learned a lot since unlocking bootloader.
