I'm new to these custom WP7 ROM's and have the same questions as you.

Anybody?

you must loose data...

but you can backup app data and settings (not full app) with WPDM
http://www.touchxperience.com/applications/view.download/22/33.html

install, run and sync with phone
Go to “Manage applications”, wait to scan for installed apps be done
Select desired apps or game which you want backup, right click an select Backup.
To restore backup, install fresh app or game to device, run WPDM and
sync your phone, then run backup file on your PC.

dont use (full) backup/restore option in WPDM... if you use it when use restore you revert phone software to time when backup is created...

If you installed apps from Marketplace, is easy to re-install it back... just go to https://www.windowsphone.com/account and re install from App Purchase History (phone must be synced with Zune)

To backup SMS use SMSBackup

So you lose every single system setting, wallpaper, e-mail account, home screen tile layout, etc., you ever did? And having to reinstall all apps is a hassle, not to mention those apps you got during a promotion (cheaper or free) and are no longer like that. If that's the case, I'm sure everyone really thinks before upgrading their custom ROM.

@lucifer3006 so just out of curiosity, the same way official updates are done with the OS can it be done with the ROMs? so that everything remains intact and the OS itself is updated instead of doing it from scratch?
