I flashed TWRP to recovry from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sofia-p-r-recovery-wip-twrp-3-4-0-0.4128353/
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp_xyz.img

And then flashed images as suggested. It worked for @asineth's ROM, it worked for this one also in my case
well, i accidentally flashed twrp to the recovery instead of what i intended...now i dont have fastbootD anymore...i think my device may well be garbage unless there is some way around this

OK, so i used > adb push lineageos-17.1-20210329-UNOFFICIAL-sofiar.zip sdcard
to push the rom over and install on the device and that also did not work, the process showed partition mounting errors.

The device still has fastbootD however...so that is good

First, I'm not questioning your abilities in any way. You asked for advice.
1.) TWRP is currently not the most stable platform on the g8 family. That is why I'm still on the stock recovery. It just works better. Seriously consider going back to stock.
2.) Is your adb up to date? From other threads, this can be an issue and can cause problems. If in doubt, uninstall and download the latest version you can find.
3.) Try booting into your bootloader without going through TWRP. From your bootloader, try using adb to boot into fastbootd and then follow the guide.
4) Are you coming from stock or another ROM? Your best result will be coming from stock. Consider flashing back to stock if coming from another ROM.

That's the basic things I know that could hang you up. Post back and let us know if this worked.
I have just flashed back to stock!!! it works, and I tried again to flash lineageos following the method here using the images posted at the beginning/top of this thread...and with the same result...device boots back to "AP Fastboot Flash Mode (Secure)" but will not boot into lineage

If anyone else bricks thier device, I successfully used the stock rom here:

for anyone using linux, here is a bash script that you can put in the Firmware directory, just paste this in a file called "flash.sh" ( or whatever you want to call it ) and remember to $ chmod +x flash.sh; then run it like this:
[email protected] ~/Phone/sofia/roms/stock/Motrola..QPM30.80../Firmware $ ./flash.sh

#!/bin/bash

Hi I'm new to custom roms. What is the difference between the first zip file with images and the 2nd zip file on this post? Thanks!

Never mind. I posted my question before the files downloaded and clearly see the differences afterwards.

Update: Great success!!! Had 0 issues installing this. Thank you for the code as well!
the one that says "images" is for flashing with fastboot, the other is for adb sideload with TWRP or push to device and flash from *within* TWRP

Update:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash product product.img
fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot reboot
Is this the desired way to update from asienth's LOS version without the need of a complete wipe?

I finally tried to install. Dirty flash over asineth's LOS 17.1.

Sideload did not worked phone rebooted and entered into TWRP. So I tried flashing from fastboot and that worked. I lost apps, but it remebered my PIN.

I have only one issue - hotspot works, but when I turn it off, phone reboots.
What apps did you lose? Did you lose any user data like images or files?

I'm having trouble getting MicroG working on this ROM.

When I go into the Self-Check page, the "System grants signature spoofing permission" is unchecked (as is "System spoofs signature"). On other phones, I use nanodroid patcher - but on this phone/ROM it fails displaying "!! ROM has native signature spoofing already!.

Am I missing something or does this ROM not work with microG?

Replying to my own question:

I had installed via F-Droid, so just as an experiment I uninstalled all MicroG items, then installed it via Magisk and it works. Also, then installed Aurora Store via F-Droid and it kept failing, went to uninstall it and realized it was a 3 year-old version. Downloaded an updated version and it ran fine. Don't trust F-Droid any longer....

I lost all apps but settings remembered what I changed. To be honest, I had some issues with flashing over asineth's ROM but I usually do not follow how-to until someting breaks :)

What do you mean? It works for me any others here in this thread.

I suggest use Linux, not Windows you avoid unnecessarily problems. Otherwise I firstly flashed TWRP into recovery. So I updated the first post (I have TWRP 3.5.0_10_0 and it works well).

I'm back.

My phone just crashed while using NewPipe, and now I can't get into my phone because I can't enter my password since the keyboard won't show up anymore. Does anyone have a possible solution?

It says "Password required after device restarts" on the password screen.

I restarted my laptop, which made the twrp flash actually work for some reason.

I deleted locksettings.db so I could get in without the password it wouldn't let me enter; and now my phone is in a screen that says "phone is starting..." and it doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. I can at least access the system settings.

Update: rebooted into recovery mode multiple times, locksettings.db and the shm and wal counterparts refuse to be deleted. They keep showing up no matter how many times I delete them in twrp.

I'd really like to debug this and even get the device moved to official. Im no newb to linux, and am happy to share experience and collaborate...any insight into the device and what is the error in my particular use case would be appreciated

    This ROM includes:
    • FDroid
    • FDroidPrivilegedExtension

    Flashing:

    I recommend GNU/Linux for this.

    1. Flash TWRP
    2. Extract the zip and open a shell with ADB and fastboot.
    3. Reboot your device into fastbootd mode.
    Code:
    fastboot reboot fastboot
    4. Flash boot, system, product, and vbmeta.
    Code:
    fastboot set_active a
    fastboot flash boot boot.img
    fastboot flash system system.img
    fastboot flash product product.img
    fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
    4. Wipe userdata.
    5CODE]fastboot -w[/CODE]

If you are on the Moto G8/G Fast and your display cutout is misbehaving, enable your overlay like so:

    Code:
adb shell cmd overlay enable org.omnirom.overlay.moto.rav

    Update:

    Code:
    fastboot flash boot boot.img
    fastboot flash system system.img
    fastboot flash product product.img
    fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
    fastboot reboot

    Working:
    • Display
    • Touchscreen
    • Wi-Fi
    • Bluetooth (including audio)
    • Headphones via 3.5mm
    • Internal Speaker
    • Moto Actions
    • Calls/SMS/LTE/VoLTE on Verizon
    • GPS
    • Notification LED
    • Hotspot

    Bugs:
    • After turning hotspot off, phone reboots
    • Inbuild screen recording app broken, phone reboots

No idea how these files differ, which one do I use or how.

No idea what this means or why is it important and listed as second most important paragraph.

    Don't know what that means.

Don't know what `fastbootd` mode is.

Doesn't work, after reboot the command line says "waiting for any devices". Can't continue.

Every year I try some Android device and venture to XDA to try some custom ROMs. It never works.
This is a very stable and well presented ROM. It is also very easy to install.
I'm not trying to be a ****, but with all the questions you have, you obviously have no idea what you are doing! If other people are successfully installing and using a ROM and you can't, the problem is not the ROM.
For starters, is your bootloader unlocked? If not, you need to do that before trying anything. If you don't know how, use search.
