yes, i'm suggesting anyone with the freezing issue to go download the newest 2.1.4 kernel from Faux from here and let us know if that helps at all ...

i believe we're getting closer to at least a temporary fix for this until we can hopefully get a permanent fix in place.

thanks

Been running RG 1.4 for the last 24 hours+ and no freezes. Switched to faux's 2.1.4 lv this morning and no freezes this morning (a few hours). I do us adwex launcher. I appreciate all team royal's persistence in trying to isolate the cause of the intractable freeze issue.

I also want to let everyone know about a thread on android theme section. You can create your own theme. Check it out.

Has anyone else noticed that when rotating to landscape on the stock launcher, the little dots on the left side flatten?

Sent from my MT4G on RoyalGinger
yeah, i noticed that too. not sure why it does that. however, in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't affect the performance and is hardly noticeable :D

no, my average boot time start to finish is between 2 min and 2 min 15 sec

a little longer if you're booting up right after clearing dalvik (or fresh install obviously)

custom splash must be adding to the boot time

also, in response to:

"Is there a way to get 7 home screens on this rom?"

you can with one of the aftermarket/3rd party launchers .. ADW EX allows you to have 7 (i think even more if you want) .. several of the others do as well .. they should say in their descriptions on the market whether they do or not ..
The 7 home screens isnt that big of a deal, though I appreciate the response. As for my boot time, I should also mention that I did not follow the installation guide in the op. I installed the same way I do with most othe roms. (full wipe of course) all I did was install the rom, allow it to boot, left it sitting for about ten minutes, then rebooted and went through setup.
During the initial boot I did notice that if I left the device sitting it kept acting like it was in a bootloop, constantly returning to the bootanimation and then after about a minute or so getting to the home screen only to do it again. I was figuring that maybe my install method has something to do with my boot time, but logcat shows nothing going wrong as far as I can tell so I haven't messed with it too much. I like this rom way too much to let a little slower boot stop me from using it...

Edit: after posting this, I used root tools to clear out my app cache and a bunch of other settings and am now down to about 2 minutes from pressing power to completely booted....

Update. I reflashed & used RoyalKnight's suggestions. Switched governor to ondemand. Turned off screen animations. Been up for about 3 hours & no freezes yet. Will report back later.

Ok so we are thinking faux newest kernel might have fixed it or at least that is what it looks like. Flash faux new kernel remember to wipe cache partition and dalvik cache prior to flashing kernel. I will probably come out with a 1.5.1 update that includes the new kernel and a few more themes.

Killing animations will also save your battery life. I always kill animations. I dont need to see something pretty going from one screen to another. Also it will increase you performance. Let us know your results. Thanks.

Could I request the boot audio in that update as well? Again, if not cool, but that would be neato! I'm going to be using royal Ginger for the foreseeable future, thanks for the dedication to the Glacier!!!

I've done this
I would just reflash the ROM then. wipe everything. follow all instructions in OP.

I've had a few flashes of 1.3 and 1.4 where my time came up 5 or 6 hours off on the initial setup .. I always just fixed it manually and the clock was fine after that. I never noticed it carrying over to my SMS timestamps and causing any issues though.

But as often as I have to reflash this ROM (because of testing future builds or other ROMs for the team) - the magical CM / google sync gods get my time zone correct off the bat 3 or 4 out of 5 times.

all is VERY good thus far with the new kernel! i'm pretty sure faux thinks i'm crazy for breaking these kernels left and right! at any rate, no freezes YET. have the SV on the sdcard just in case i need to flash... (these freezes are the weirdest damn thing)

on a side note, royalknight, a couple of things: (1) love the home screen rotation, so please don't change that as i try to use widescreen on my glacier as much as possible, including the home screen, (2) is there any way to incorporate the other stock calendar (think it was pink in color)? i'm not a fan of the one that's included as it is very basic and the other had more options (if not, no worries), (3) 98.13% of the time when i end a call, my phone defaults to a lockscreen. is there a way to fix this? i've gone through all settings and enabled/disabled items that i think would help, but it doesn't. (4) and last but not least (very minor), the new browser included doesn't enable sorting of bookmarks; is there a way to remedy this other than going with 3rd party?

keep up the awesome work...OUT.

I definately see an increase in performance. Been it for about 7 hours now & no freezes. Maybe I won't need to flash faux's new kernal. This rom is amazing! Thank you guys! Hopefully I won't have anymore freezes.

did my reply here last time you brought the lockscreen end call issue up not help? mine returns to home screen every time.

the browser has bookmark functioning built in ... theres a bookmark icon to the right of the title bar at the top of the browser .. you click on it , it brings up bookmarks, most visited, and history ... the very first option on the top left box under bookmarks shows your current page and says 'Add' with a star on it. click that and you're good.

alternately, hitting the menu button while in the browser has a 'bookmarks' button there as well which brings you to the same screen as the bookmark shortcut icon to the right of the title bar.

i'm glad the new kernel is working for you. it does not appear that 2.1.4 fixes the issue for everyone but i'm seeing some encouraging reports from it helping several of you. as i've started suspecting a little bit ago, i believe that hardware is coming into play here and thus the ol' adage of everyones phone not being equal/identical means that likely one solution is not going to fix it 100% of the time for EVERYONE that is experiencing this (again, still appears to def be a minority / fraction of users that have this issue at all) ... but hoping best case - yes we come up with a fix that works across to board for everyone ... or potentially (and what it looks like to me presently) is that we will come up with 2-3 (or more?) fixes, one or more of which should solve it depending on your situation/setup/hardware.

Mac33, glad you're enjoying it!

YES - PLEASE, IF IT'S BROKE - DON'T FIX IT!!!!

aka - if you've been having the freeze issue and the new kernel (or anything else) is working for you - DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING!!!

...we should continue to get a better grasp on the causes/symptoms/resolutions as time goes on and we continue to research and troubleshoot ... so ideally, we'll have it all ironed out in a future update across the board but for now ... as i stated in my last post just a min ago - it looks like what is working for some right now is not necessarily working for others in regards to their phones 'behaving' and not freezing.

stick with what works!

Battery life has sucked today, check it out

The break early on is where I flasked the new faux lv kernel

guys - you CANNOT 'judge' battery performance the day of a flash .. of anything really. but especially ROMs and kernels. but i've even seen my perceived battery life/performance affected by flashing a theme or aftermarket app/icon/font that I flashed thru recovery.

you need to use the phone until it drains down as close to 0% as you can (i heard recently from a knowledgable source that draining it all the way to dead/wont' turn on isn't really good for the battery in the long run) and the let it charge all the way back up to 100% (ideally turned off ... see here for details on how to do that since our gingerbread flavor recoveries won't technically 'allow' charging while the phone is fully off) and you should be good to go the next day or so ...

.. and for that matter, there's often a break in period after flashing ROMs, kernels, etc. of even a couple/few days before your phone/battery gets back to normal on battery reporting/performance.

PPS - you don't want to do this TOO often (maybe once every month to two at the most, as i understand it) - but you may also do the above steps PLUS wipe the battery stats (in recovery / under 'advanced') after you've charged to 100% ... after wiping battery stats, let it charge for another hour or two ...

the worst thing you can do for the day or two or three following a new flash is give it partial charges (IE - plug it in when there's 30% left for 30-45 mins...before it's back to 100% and then use it some more, etc.) during this period ... of course, in real life, this may not be feasible and you gotta do what you gotta do - IT WILL BE OK in the long run ... lol ... just may need to do the wipe battery stats deal as soon as you know you're gonna have a day or two where you can use it til its down to 1% or so and then charge it overnight all the way back up to 100%.

i'm fairly certain that after you've done these things and let your new ROM or kernel break in properly ... after a few days you'll be back to drooling at the kind of battery life you get outta this ROM :D

happy flashing!

@ckisgen
I agree with you and your correct. I wouldn't have even mentioned it except its so far down from normal. Normal for me should be about 60% or so but instead I'm at 23%. Normal includes flashing new Tom's and kernals and apps. Before I was using the nightlies flashing every morning.
Anyhow, I'm not terribly worried but just thought it worth mentioning.
You are correct about lithium ion batteries, when they totally die crystals form inside and permanently reduce your life.

ckisgen, i actually had referred to your suggestion last time prior to posting my comments. for some reason, in spare parts, the end behavior selection didn't stick. i just enabled it again and will check out. RE: bookmarks, yes, i'm very familiar with how it operates. however, my comment was about alphabetical listing of bookmarks. in this version of the browser there isn't an option for it. just bookmark last-viewed page and list view/thumbnail view. and there's nothing in settings for it either. no big deal, i was just curious on why it was taken out (not by team royal i'm sure, but just this newer version of the webkit).
