thanks for this rom, so far it runs good on my trusty S10E (y)

Given that you include a modified Dialer, it would be great if you included an auto call recording option. seems to require only minor modifications:

thanks for considering it!

Great idea, I'll be glad for that as well.

Btw, anyone experience slow and inaccurate GPS navigation?

If anyone use IodéOS 3.1 with root (any possible way), please, PM me. I need some instructions.

For now, I'll stay with default Iodé recovery (which is fine, I don't actually need TWRP), but I really miss root privileges for AdAway or automatic updates on background for Aurora Store.
Did you root your ROM? And if so, how's your experience? I'm interested to know :)

Hi @vince31fr, and thanks for bringing us this ROM.
I love the idea behind Iodé, all about privacy. This is exactly what I was looking for. However, out of the box I've noticed a few drawbacks and glitches (I'm on the latest version as of today, Iode 3.2, date 14/10/2022):

1- How do I go about rooting this device? I've read in the LOS threads that the Magisk zip must be flashed, but how? An unrooted phone somehow contradicts the "all about privacy" policy, in my opinion. I absolutely need root privileges. (EDIT: semi-fixed. See below.)

2- Pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled, only disabled (and not even all of them). I want full control of my system. Things like Geometric Weather are totally useless to me, but I can't even uninstall them with Titanium. Is this at all possible?

3- When placing apps (.apk files) in the internal storage via MTP (from the computer), the file shows up but the app cannot be installed: touching on the icon does nothing. BUT when placing the .apk file via "adb push" then everything works as expected and I can install the app. Is this a bug, or is it a "feature" for preventing MTP-ed apps from being installed?

4- The Iodé recovery is restricted to Iodé-signed zip files, thus making impossible to flash anything other than Iodé system updates. That is very inconvenient. (EDIT: semi-fixed. See below.)

Any help or hints welcome.

[EDIT] I managed to work around issues #1 and #4 by replacing Iodé recovery with LineageOS recovery. This allowed me to flash the Magisk zip file, which roots the system. So now I have root. Still, I believe that non-essential apps should be "uninstallable".

Hi @vince31fr. Are you (or someone in your team) in the mood of replying to any post on this thread at all? I'm not just thinking of my las post: In the already five pages this thread has, you have only made a minor remark to one of the posts. Even in Gitlab, I see many of the reported problems do not receive feeback by the developers.

What is Iode Team's idea of supporting a ROM? As I said above, I love the concept behind Iode LOS, fully focused on privacy; I was quite excited when reading the description and claims; but if there is not going to be significative feedback from the devs, then what's the point for us in trying to sort out by ourselves every issue we have and may come across? If Iode's philosophy is to just release the software and let the users figure out the fixes or workarounds, then I may as well try another ROM with better support.

I did, but ver 3.1 was not stable. Since then, I switched to LOS for MicroG, without root and everything is fine.

So I guess it was due to rooting. Only reason, why I rooted my devices was because of AdAway, however we have now multiple ways how block unwanted app connections (NextDNS, Rething DNS) and also with opening-source of iodé adblocker there is, probably most efficient way of adblocking without root.

BREAKING NEWS

iodéOS is now fully Open Source!

(read more here)
That, honestly, makes me rethink about going back to IodéOS! It was only reason why I wen back to LOS for MicroG, now iodéOS has huge advantage of inbuilt adblocker with open code, preinstalled MicroG and another default open-source apps. Thank you, I think that was excellent decision.

From my experience, @vince31fr is very active developer and helps me every-time I asked something. Except questions about rooting, which now I understand why he refuse to answer.

I still use IodéOS on A5 2017 devices. If privacy matters and root is not necessary, for Samsung devices it is probably best custom ROM we have.

Not only Vince31fr. Most developers are very active and busy, yet some are into replying questions and symbiotically giving feedback to the users, whereas some others basically only post updates, which is the case in this thread so far. And that is a pity: it discourages users to make questions and solve their issues, therefore discouraging them also to install and use Iode.

Of course, it is Vince31fr's sovereign and rightful choice to not respond to comments, but well -- perhaps that's why this thread has only five pages after 15 months of existence, whereas, for instance, LineageOS 19 has thirteen pages after only six months.

Well, when I was maintaining a single device (cepheus) I had time to answer to nearly everyone... I now maintain more than 20 devices and make a lot of development in the rom (mainly related to the blocker): no time anymore to closely follow 20 threads on xda ! I'm more active on our community forum and the beta testing group (open to everyone).
To answer your questions:
1-4 : Great, you found by yourself
2: This is a bit more complicated. Apps are immediately disabled when you 'uninstall' them, but at next reboot they are completely hidden to the system with some low-level hacks in the filesystem. The system only sees empty directories, as you can verify by yourself: and as such, removes everything related to them. Even if they are in reality still present on the storage, the system is fooled and thinks/acts just as if the apps were uninstalled.
3: I now have the answer to the question I asked on gitlab issues. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce the issue. You could maybe produce a logcat.

I don't understand exactly what you understood about rooting questions. To be clear, I don't support rooting first due to lack of time, and second because I consider that people which root their phone should be able to solve their problems themselves, or manage to get help on forums etc. And rooting introduces too much problems and uncertainty about the exact reasons of failures, which have nothing to do with the rom by itself. I concentrate on improving the rom, not improving ways to hack it.

Your are not giving answers about TWRP and rooting which leads me to what you write here - so clearly I understand and have no problem with that. I've quit with rooting and TWRP myself after more issues than advantages that it brings.

Thank you! I have already submitted on Gitlab my latest findings regarding this issue, which is a quite strange one.

I would make an additional suggestion: please let us users choose which notifications we want in our phone. As of today, in IodeOS it's not possible to opt out of many notifications. I am sure the immediate reply is: "We do it for your safety", but I have personally never bought into that argument. For my safety I was locked down one year, forced to take three jabs and still got the c-19 flu. :) We are all adults here, we know (or should) what we do when we unlock the bootloader, install a new recovery and flash a custom ROM. That's a good deal of risk in itself. We must, therefore, be more than ready to face any minor consequences if we disable certain notifications.

I for instance have an annoying and ever-present reminder that one of my apps is displaying over others. I know that! I installed that app myself and marked the "display over others" checkbox. I do not need the system constantly reminding -and bugging- me about it. And this is just an example. There are many others. In my opinion, locking things and not giving total freedom to the user works quite against the philosophy of custom ROMs.

I am using iodéOS for over a year. Since some month the aurora store only updates it's apps if I open it, manually start the update and approve every app update.
Is this normal? How can I fix this?

Is it the preinstalled Aurora Store version ?
Is "Session installer" selected in installation method ?

    Introduction

iodéOS is a privacy-focused operating system powered by LineageOS and based on the Android mobile platform. iodéOS aims at protecting the user's privacy with a built-in adblocker and by freeing the smartphone from snitches.

The objectives in the conception of this ROM are threefold:

    1. To keep the stability and security level of LineageOS, by minimizing the modifications made to the system. Apart the system modifications required by the adblocker, we mainly only added a few useful options commonly found in other custom ROMs, made some cosmetic changes, modified a few default settings to prevent data leaks to Google servers.
    2. To ease a quick adoption of this ROM by new users. We especially target users that are concerned by the protection of their privacy, but are not reluctant to still use inquisitive apps like Google ones. We thus included MicroG as well as a coherent set of default apps, and simplified the initial setup of the system. Particularly, an initialization of MicroG has been made with GCM notifications allowed by default, a privacy-friendly network location provider (DéjàVu) pre-selected, as well as Nominatim Geocoder.
    3. To provide a new and powerful way of blocking ads, malwares, data leaks of all kinds to many intrusive servers. We are developing an analyzer, tightly integrated into the system, that captures all DNS requests and network traffic, as well as a user interface (the iodé app). Compared to some other well-known adblockers, this has the advantages of:
      • Avoiding to lock the VPN for that use. You can even use another adblocker that uses VPN technology alongside our blocker.
      • Being independent of the kind of DNS server used by the system or set by an independent app: classical DNS on UDP port 53 or any other one, DNS over TLS (DoT), DNS over HTTPS (DoH), ..., as we capture the DNS requests before they are transmitted to the system function that emits the DNS request. What we do not support, is DoH when it is natively built into applications, i.e. when an app communicates directly with a DoH server, without asking name resolution to the system. It would require to decrypt HTTPS packets between such an app and the DoH server, which may create a big security hole.
      • Precisely mapping DNS requests and network packets to the Android apps that emitted (or received) them.
      • Deciding which apps have a filtered network usage (by default, all apps), and which ones can communicate with blacklisted servers.
Since its first versions, we added many features to the iodé blocker: several levels of protection, fine-grained control over the hosts that should be blocked or authorized, displaying statistics on a map to see the quantity of data exchanged to which countries, clearing statistics... We are actively developing the blocker, and new functionalities will be regularly added.

    Features

Changes in LineageOS to prevent data leaks:

    • Default DNS server: Google's DNS replaced by Quad9's 'unblocked' servers in all parts of the system.
    • A-GPS: patches to avoid leaking personnal information like IMSI to supl server.
    • Captive portal login: connectivitycheck.gstatic.com replaced by captiveportal.kuketz.de for connectivity check.
    • Dialer: Google default option replaced by OpenStreetMap for phone number lookup.

    Pre-installed apps:

We included many useful default apps, but our choice cannot suit everyone; so we added the possibility to remove them. It can be done at the end of the phone setup, or at any time by going to Parameters -> Apps & Notifications -> Preinstalled apps.

    • MicroG core apps: GmsCore, GsfProxy, FakeStore.
    • NLP backends for MicroG : DejaVuNLPBackend (default), MozillaNLPBackend, AppleNLPBackend, RadioCellsNLPBackend, Nominatim Geocoder.
    • App stores : FDroid (with F-Droid Privileged Extension) and Aurora Store.
    • Browser: our own fork of Firefox (with Qwant as default search engine, many other ones added, telemetry disabled, parts of telemetry code removed) instead of Lineage’s default browser Jelly.
    • SMS: QKSMS instead of Lineage's default SMS app.
    • Email: p≡p (Pretty Easy Privacy).
    • Camera: our own fork of Open Camera, with a few tweaks.
    • Maps/navigation: Magic Earth GPS & Navigation (the only one free but not open source).
    • Keyboard: OpenBoard instead of AOSP keyboard.
    • PDF: Pdf Viewer Plus.
    • Personnal notes: Carnet.
    • {Ad/Malware/Data leak}-blocker: iodé.
    • News: to keep users informed about our developments, as well as a FAQ.
    • Meteo: Geometric Weather.

    Pre-included FDroid repository:

The apps that we tweak or develop (microG services, the browser based on Firefox, the News app, Open Camera ...) are available through a repository that we included in FDroid (check the "Apps for iodéOS" category). For this purpose and to avoid name conflicts of some apps, we also had to make a few changes in FDroid.

Useful options from other custom ROMs:
    • Smart charging (disables charging when a given level is reached, to protect battery health).
    • Fingerprint vibration toggle.
    • Swipe down to clear all in recent apps (Android 10 only).

      • Installation procedure: move to a fastboot script (read instructions: https://gitlab.com/iode/ota)
      • Blocker: improved use of blocking lists (sub-domains blocking)
      • FDroid: fixes an issue on apps update

    • 07/02/2023 (build 20230131) for S10e (beyond0lte), S10 (beyond1lte) and S10+ (beyond2lte):
      • Blocker:
        • Improved blocking settings. You can now choose 'Standard' blocking (ads, trackers, malwares, etc) or 'Reinforced' blocking (same objective but more extensive), and then select additional categories.
        • The 'Porn' category has been extended to a wider 'Sensitive content' one, that also includes fake news, gambling, drugs, piracy, torrent..., with mainly child protection in mind.
        • The 'Extreme' category has been removed, as it is now part of the reinforced blocking.
        • Improved blocking lists. We merge several acknowledged and up-to-date sources, and have diversified our sources to produce more complete lists. The standard list has however been reduced a bit, to avoid as much as possible interference with apps expected behavior.
      • Added a new network location provider: Local NLP Backend. It is an improved version of the DéjàVu NLP backend which was already available in iodéOS. Like DéjàVu, it builds a local database connecting localizations learned from other NLP backends and apps using GPS, and mobile antennas/Wifi; but also has an active mode (not preselected) that can trigger GPS requests. To configure it: Settings -> System -> microG -> Location modules

Is there any way to use google RCS chat in google messages or restore whatsapp backups on this ROM.
I'm aware using these apps compromises my privacy, but i need them to communicate with family and friends.
I managed to finally restore my WhatsApp messages. If you have a spare device handy it helps, I'll assume in my instructions that you do and this device has WhatsApp with all your data on.

    On the spare device:
    • Open WhatsApp -> Settings -> Chats -> Chat Backup
    • Make sure "Back up to Google Drive" is set to "Never"
    • Then click "Back Up"
    • This will then save a local backup to the root of your device (well the main user folder)
    • Navigate to your root/user folder and compress the WhatsApp folder. It should contain 3 folders within it: Backups, Databases, Media.
    • Download Airdroid (or something similar, but this worked best for me) and start a web session.
On the new device with iodé:
    • Go to the Local IP Address displayed in Airdroid (or equivalent)
    • Download the .zip file you created.
    • Unzip this file into the root/user folder that you found it on the spare device.
    • DOUBLE CHECK: That the folder structure is the same as on the spare device:
      • Root/User
        • WhatsApp
          • Backups
          • Databases
          • Media
    • Install WhatsApp from the Aurora Store (or whereever you prefer)
    • You should then be prompted to "Restore Backup" after the SMS/Phone verification in the process.
    Hope this helps!

p.s. Use Signal rather than WhatsApp if you're interested in even more privacy. The hard part is getting others to use it.

Great Rom, I am using it since 2 hours.

    One important note:
Your installation guide has some mistakes(at least for unlocked phones )

You do not tell which recovery should be used. Also that you need the recovery image and the file vbmeta .img.
The TWRP xda page instructions for Heimdall Linux helped me:

Just a quick heads up - TWRP will break stuff just like on my lineage, lineage recovery should be added to installation instructions instead.
Manually flashing a disabled vbmeta image also isn't needed unless AVB was disabled in this build.
