Hi!
AOSP NeatROM hasn't been maintained for a long time now. I wouldn't recommend it if you really want to make your S2 "new". It was released long before Stagefright security issue became prominent and also before the infamous freezebug was fixed. Probably there are other unfixed issues. I would recommend trying CM12.1 or another CM12.1-based rom, which is still well maintained.

Not sure what exactly you mean by the USB-storage stuff. I never had problems with this, no matter if stock or AOSP rom.

Hm havent checked that one out yet. Is that a lightweight rom and with good battery life?

The USB storage im talking about is that the S2 has 2 different storage locations(3 if you add the optional sd card) The primary is 2 GB and thats where you install programs. In addition it has some sort of 11.5GB storage USB that can only be used when connecetd to a computer for photos etc. So its basicly a non usable USB stick on your phone. I was hoping that there now was a way to use that storage as a primary storage and for apps.

CM ist probably the most used custom rom of all. In its deafult config it's pretty lightweight, yes. The amount of bloatware can be controlled by which gapps package you choose. Battery life is normal, I'd say. Don't forget that this phone is 5 years old now and its battery is pretty small compared to current-gen phones. You won't get any miracles with any rom.

Yes, S2 uses 2 different partitions for apps and storage.
The /data partition is 2GB by default and the rest 11.5GB are mounted as /storage/sdcard0. But I don't understand, why it's not usable. Normally all your downloads, camera pics, etc... basically all your files will go to sdcard0, so it should be usable.
If you plan to install a custom rom, you might want to read a little bit about repartitioning, to make the /data partition bigger than 2GB and probably also the /system partition bigger than 512MB.

Thanks for the reply. AS you said some files wil go the the USB memory, but then again its the programs that fills the primary memory first. But if I can repartion as a HDD drive then this wil be alot better :)
Iv changed the battery a few times and understand its not great, but iv understood some builds use a lot of battery. And since some are 4.4.4 and some 5.1 I figured that the newest ones might demand more of the phone and then use more aswel. AS I stated I just want a basic build where I can use my 10 apps. I almost never use it for music or video, just as a "phone with benefits". :)

I understand. I suggest you read a little bit inside this thread to find out more about partitioning on the S2. I currently have 6 GB for my apps instead of 2 GB. I'm also experienced with creating PIT files, so if you have wishes about custom partition sizes, let me know.
Then I would suggest you try out CM12.1 with a minimal gapps package and see how you like it.

I see, your great :)
But to be sure here, its seems thare are 3 partitions? The system(memory?) 500mb And this is better at 1GB?
Then increase the app memory from 2gb to 6b seems good. Then I have the last internal memory of about 7gb left which is good.
But not to be a noob but iv never flashed a phone before in any way, and if im to use a kernal, rom and also re-partition it, could you give me a heads up in which order I should to this? From resetting phone to finish. Iv read some guides, just need to find out in what order I should follow em :)

Actually it's 4 partitions that are interesting for repartitioning:
/system (default 512 MB): This is where your rom (Android) is installed. Also system apps and other bloatware goes there. It is mounted read-only and thus can only be modified with root-access. It is recommended to increase the size for newer Android versions. How big? It depends how much bloatware you want. I only use very basic Google apps like playstore, calendar, etc. and install the rest via playstore, so I currently use 768 MB for /system.
/data (default 2 GB): This is where your userapps will go (the ones you install from playstore and other sources). Also their data (settings, savegames, etc.) goes there. Also updates for system apps will go there, as /system is read-only. So if you have e.g. Gmail as a preinstalled system app and it is updated vie playstore, it will consume the same space on /data as if it was a userapp.
For apps nowadays, 2GB is really small. 4GB - 6GB are more like it.
/preload (default 512 MB): This is a special partition only used by Samsung stock roms. Samsung uses it to store additional bloatware there. When using AOSP roms, this partition is not needed at all. This is why many users decide to shrink it down to minimal sizes. You will find different opinions about this on xda. Some say that 500MB of extra space is not worth the trouble. Also you will have to repartition again, if you ever want to retrun to a Samsung rom. But I like to have a clean system, so I resized it to 22.5MB only.
/sdcard: This is your normal storage. All the photos from your camera, your downloads and personal files go there. Its size is the "rest" of the other 3 partitions, so the bigger they are, the less space you have available here.

I hope it was understandable :)

For more detailed instructions on flashing etc. please contact me via PM, this doesn't need to fill this thread ;)

Hello,
with this rom I have the battery drain monstrous, yet with the app batterystats I do not see anything relevant, what might be causing the battery drain?

Fast dormancy

Hi @_Sale_

I have a question regarding fast dormancy - is it possible to turn it off and why if not?

I have tried, I think, every known way to switch it off and no luck so far. It drains my battery in less than a day (multipdp, rilj etc. wakelocks).

Great work

Both this S2 and I are now older. But at 76yo I dropped this Rom in (Previouslyoriginal Neatrom) and now I'm blown away with my "Pocket Rocket".
So I just want to say Job well done to the team and XDA forum contributors.
I put the Autumn 3D and my mates wanted to know what this latest model SamSung that has just come out!!

Hugs all around :good:,

First off - check out the FAQ before posting

    * Use always latest version of recovery
    * To get Root working go to Dev Tools/Developer options/Root access
    * To activate ART go to Dev Tools/Developer options/Select runtime

Q: How to set custom lockscreen wallpaper?
A: Rename your image to "lockscreen_wallpaper.jpg" and copy it to data/NeatRomWallpaper/here (replace the original)

    Q: How to change DPI?
    A: Look here

Q: My Ext SD isn't being recognised any more?
A: If your Ext SD is exFat, then format it as FAT32 don't forget to backup your data.
(For Windows users - try using Easeus Partition Manager - see here)

Q; Advanced Reboot doesn't seem to be working?
A: To activate Advanced Reboot Options go to System Settings/Security/Advanced Reboot

Q; ART doesn't seem to be working?
A: To activate ART go to Dev Tools/Developer options/Select runtime and ensure "Use Art" is selected. Don't forget to reboot!!!
If that doesn't work - then uninstall Xposed before changing to ART as Xposed doesn't work with ART. (see here)

Q: ART is not working, causing application issues I have xposed framework installed
A: Art should work fine as long as if you are not using xposed framework
    Use root explorer
    Navigate to system/bin
Check to see if you have 'app_process.orig'
If so delete it and try ART again

    Q: What is ART - http://source.android.com/devices/tech/dalvik/art.html
A: ART stands for ‘Android RunTime’ and its job couldn’t be more important: it runs the apps on Android devices.
ART replaces ‘Dalvik’ (named after the Icelandic village where creator Dan Bornstein’s ancestors lived) which has performed this task since Android first appeared.
As you might expect Dalvik was getting very long in the tooth and it wasn’t that great in the first place. In giving it the boot users will get two significant benefits
    1. More Speed
Dalvik uses the ‘Just-in-time’ (JIT) process which means it has to transform app source code into an executable program every time it starts.
Android apps have to run through a conversion each time they are started.
By contrast ART uses the ‘Ahead-of-time’ (AOT) process and this compiles (aka does the conversion) when an app is installed.
Using this method apps can launch up to twice as quickly which will have a dramatic effect on the sense of speed of your phone.
    2. Better battery Life
AOT processing is making app-launch a less intensive process, so your phone doesn’t have to work as hard which increases battery life.
Using your phone you won’t see a major difference, but significant gains will come in standby as apps which run in the background will now do so more efficiently

    Downsides of ART
    1. It uses more storage Or to be more precise your installed apps will use more storage – roughly 10% to 20%.
This is because the pre-compiled apps which allow ART to run so quickly and efficiently have to be installed this way which makes them bigger compared to Dalvik’s on-demand method.
For those with a lot of apps installed this could take a significant chunk of your available space, they will also take a little longer to install.
    2. Some apps are incompatible on Android 4.4.2, if you do find a key app that doesn’t work it is possible to switch back to Dalvik.

Q: OBackup is not working since moving on to AOSP NeatROM
A: Install SuperSU from Google Play.
    Reboot phone (Good practice)
    Install OBackup
Under settings configure to save backups to external storage
    Set backup as TWRP
    Run backup

    Q: Where is superuser?
A: Superuser is nicely integrated in Settings/Advanced Options!

    Q: Battery draining quickly
A: Install Better Battery Stats Google Play
    XDA Thread on understanding BBS

Q: How do I remove system apps?
A:Go into Settings/SlimCenter/Slimsizer. Tick the boxes for the apps you want to remove and then click the delete icon (bin) in the bottom right corner.

Q: Have an different ROM and want to come on to AOSP NeatROM, don't want to lose apps/data
A: Install Titanium and backup apps/data - Knowledge base
Full wipe - including - Delvik and Cache
    Flash ROM flash gapps
    Reboot
    Install titanium
    Restore your apps
    Reboot
    Activate art (optional)
    Reboot

Q: Applications are not installing, insufficent space messages
    A: se root explorer
    Navigate to data/data
Find the application which you were installing (for e.g com.android.xposed)
    Delete it
    Install the application

To go back on a stock NeatROM:
    Go to recovery
Flash Philz kernel from external SD
    Reboot recovery
Wipe data/clean to install a new ROM
Flash ROM or restore your nandroid
    Reboot device
