Nougat is smoother in general compared to MM due to Sony kernel & ROM hacks,

I can not open KA-Mod (Advanced Kernel settings) or SuperSu that is within XZ Extras in the setting, then checking the status of Root tells me that is not root. The ROM comes without root or is that I have to activate from somewhere?

Yes yes as long as there is no dirty flash going on and system, data, (internal storage not necessary), dalvik cache /cache is wiped then sure but you will be on 6.1

Emm it's recommended to flash stock but considering mrom is actually based off stock I don't see why not however your going to an older android version so they MAY or MAY NOT be issues just try your luck I guess
