Is there any chance of getting the MHL support baked in, or do I have to return to this lame 5.1?
There were problems with getting usb work properly and since no developer was using MHL (nor it was priority), it ended up untested and probably not working. Sure, that's actually really easy, done it on my xperia z1 c6903.
Download twrp here (xperia z1 - honami): https://dl.twrp.me/honami/
Put the phone in fastboot mode check if detected:
fastboot devices
If detected, run:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Usually, wrong APN. Enter your APN data manually, have a look on the operator's website or into the settings of another phone that works with this certain operator.
Finally, I had the opportunity to install this rom on my own phone.
I really want to thank you @SuperLamic for providing us with this great ROM!
Everything works, it's fast, has good battery life.
And the selfiecam works great! Picture's upside down while taking, but jpegs are correct, that's what matters most.

I've Xperia Z1 (C6903). I did a full wipe using TWRP 3.0.2, flashed the ROM an GAPPS at least 7 times but then my phone doesnt boot at all. It is stuck at Sony logo and does not move forward. In addition, it drains battery and then i have to go back to original Sony ROM to charge as it doesnt charge as well. Please help me to resolve this. Thank you!

Fastboot kernel and then fastboot twrp and then install the rom! It got the rom working for me and if your have Indian Variant of Z1 flash modem.zip
