I just dug up my old fire tablet with mustang on it and lineage 14.1 and put this 16.0 on it, but it seems like i'm not able to stream videos from my plex library.

I've tried adjusting every option to play back in a variety of resolutions and h264 versions, and can't get it to work.

Has anyone run into an issue trying to stream video or may have an idea on how to fix it?

--edit--
Oh, i see it's a known issue with video rendering. I'll keep an eye on the thread if one day it'll get fixed.

Aside from the video issue, how are you liking performance? I have the original 16.0 build on it, which seems pretty decent. It's much faster than my old Amazon ford tablet ever could be.

Yeah its not bad overall. I don't use it much, as it was just a tinkering project to modify the tablet to run android for me. I do need more little plex media tablets to be able to have more options to watch my shows, so if that can ever get fixed, it'll get a lot more use. :)

I want to use my device as a tablet for Home Assistant next to the entrance door. Therefore I'm just curious, is this ROM still in dev or is it discontinued?
None of us can actually answer for the author, but it looks like it's probably dead. No new updates in a very very long time and standing issues. Bear in mind this is a relatively oldish tablet that didn't have the best hardware (SoC is a MediaTek in particular -- could be worse, but definitely could be a lot better too) that was officially replaced with a newer model long ago (not sure if there are exploits for the newer ones or not, but I'm betting there are given the popularity and low pricerange of the series.)

That said, for most simple tasks it works fine. I really don't think you'll have any issues just using it as a home assistant. I only use mine for reading and keep it clean and simple and it's still very snappy at simple tasks with a good battery life. As a bit of a tip, if it will be around a lot of sunlight or bright overhead lights, get a matte finish screen protector for better bright light handling. (I'm assuming we're talking about inside. These are fairly cheaply made and not well sealed, so likely would be a bad idea to have outside if you had anything like that in mind.) The current build here seems to be pretty stable and reliable other than the known issues that shouldn't affect what you have in mind.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I tried this ROM and come to a similar conclusion. Than I switched back to Lineage-14.1
The tablet is old, slow and the display is not really bright anymore. But it's to good to throw away. I installed fully kiosk browser to show a home assistant dashboard (still in evaluation therefore I didn't buy a licence until now). Also I cut the internet connection for this device. Works like charme for his last days before retirement.

I dug out my old Fire 7 recently and flashed this onto it. Performs so much better than when it was running Fire OS. Shame video rendering isn't working, otherwise it's perfect for my uses. It lags so much less than when it was running Fire OS, really impressed with it so far.

HI all,

I've been having a problem with this ROM on a mustang Fire 7 where WiFi will just stop working after some time. Sometimes it'll show connected but nothing works and other times it will just disconnect from the network for no reason and not automatically connect to any network it has saved.

Any ideas? I just wiped the unit and flashed the latest version yesterday and WiFI crapped out while doing the initial setup.

It's definitely not an issue with my house's WiFi. I have dozens of devices and nothing else has a problem.

@ggow I have noticed some recent movement on the source repo, anything you'd like to be tested? :D
Hello, just wondering if theres any solution of media playback for the [2022 jan pie] rom for amazon fire mustang? I am really in desperate of watching video on this tablet, but this pie rom's playback isnt fixed.

Granted, the 14.1 lineageos mustang version does do playback, but im still having screen-rendering issues, even flashing the all custom zips that others made in other 14.1 lineage mustang tread, and also, apps crashed like youtube, google, etc. So i also need some help on how to fully use 14.1 lineageos mustang without any errors.

I would be appreciated if you can help me with 14.1 lineageos mustang rom, I tried searching on it but cant find any solution for the apps, they just instantly crash after like a minute of usage.

There's a commit on the repo currently that implies that it fixes the playback issue. I'm not sure if @ggow is planning to release another build, but If you're really desperate you could try to build it yourself. I've looked into it a bit and it seems tedious but doable provided you have a decently capable machine running Ubuntu. If you do go that route let me know how it goes.

You are correct that it needs "all of the coding and performance codes or something", in that each Lineage ROM requires device-specific code. To my knowledge, you need three device-specific things to build a ROM:
    • Kernel Source
    • Device Tree
    • Vendor Files
Thankfully, all of the work to make those has already been done for this device, and the developer was kind enough to post the source code for the kernel and device tree under an open-source license (See the GitHub links in the first post). The vendor files can be extracted from your device, so you shouldn't need to code anything to get it to work. You just need to compile the code that has already been written into an operating system, and it seems like there are pretty decent instructions for that on stack overflow.

All that said, you need at least 100GB of free space to do it and with your CPU it would take quite a while. Also, keep in mind that I haven't actually tried it (yet) so I am just going off of what I have read, and I'm probably wrong.

Thanks for support, i really appreciate that : )

Also, i did saw one comment on this thread (or maybe on 14,1 lineageos mustang) that newpipe can playback videos flawlessly by switching the "Default Video Format" from mpeg-4 to WebP, and it really works! Gald i found it, but by exactly which one were you refering about "There's a commit on the repo currently that implies that it fixes the playback issue."?

And im a nooby in xda developers, so yeah
The code in the device tree got updates a few months ago but no one has actually released a build including them yet, which is why building it yourself would fix the playback issue.

FWIW you can always use a VM if the OS is an impediment. Building stuff is slow on weak machines/VMs, but it just takes longer rather than failing.

Sadly, for most of us end users, "just fork your own" is beyond us. If we knew how to do this stuff we wouldn't really be asking about it -- we'd just do it and report and share results.

That said, I wouldn't expect Mustang to be great at video watching though, just FYI. Its hardware limitations are somewhat severe. Great for book reading and the like, but videos would have to be fairly limited. It likely couldn't get a lot of good hardware acceleration in particular (even on stock frankly. It's not that great of a SoC -- but then these things were built to be cheap.) I don't know if we're talking video files placed on the tablet or Youtube or whatever, but if local files you may have to reencode and downsample a lot of them. If using anything like Youtube it may autodetect down pretty low or you may have to manually set it to extremely low quality. It may not be worth it with the results you'd get even if it had the full video capabilities of the model unless you're willing to manually reencode a lot of stuff to get the best balance of everything.

I consider my old Fire 7 tablets to be great for reading, looking stuff up, and that sort of thing, but wouldn't recommend attempting to do anything more serious on them. I recommend picking devices from official LineageOS support lists in particular before buying. I know that doesn't help you right now and we're not all overflowing with cash or we probably wouldn't be here, but it is something at least to bear in mind whenever you do buy. Actually, it's amazing they've been able to do this much with any Fire tablet given how closed and locked down they are all meant to be.

Yeah I completely agree. I've been thinking about trying to build lineage for a while and it generally hasn't seemed worth it. Also I did try out the playback using the newpipe webm method and it seemed perfectly smooth. I really don't use fire all that much because with how large the bezels are the screen isn't much larger than my phone (a OnePlus 11). Unfortunately the screen is also pretty low res for watching videos and mono audio isn't awesome either.

    - EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: This ROM only works on devices using the bootloader hack.

    - IMPORTANT: Do not update Magisk via the Magisk Manager App, your device will enter a bootloop if you do. Instead update Magisk via TWRP only. If you do this by accident then it is recoverable by just flashing the latest version of the ROM again (with gapps etc as required). This will be fixed in a later update.

Got this working on my fire 7. Pretty amazing!
Having issues with YouTube playback with new pipe though. Setting default video format to WebM seems to fix it. Playback also doesn't work in Firefox.

I'm having the same issue. I can't play YouTube in the app, on Firefox, or in NewPipe. I also can't play videos on cnn.com in Firefox. Setting the format to webp in NewPipe does fix it though.
Added video playback to the todo list
