Hi, searched this thread for the keywords - search, bar and remove - all different searches, all with no result.
So here I am asking:

After 2 crashes with a few hours of a bit of tinkering, I really wanted to get rid of this search bar on top of the first homescreen.
Didn't find any option to do so.
Can someone tell me what it is for, and how I remove it?

So far, it LineageOS 18 feels a bit quicker on the i9300 than the LOS 14 i was trying out before.
Though I find it a bit difficult and irritating to work with, but I assume this is more due to the fact that I used TouchWiz on Android 6 for years and year on my trusty ol' Samsung Galaxy S5.

The recent XenForo update to this website has temporarily broken thread searches, which is why you couldn't find anything. It's believed that re-indexing will fix this, when it completes (takes quite a while, apparently).

If by "this search bar on top of the first homescreen" you mean the search widget on the launcher's home page ... many Android launchers include a search widget by default. You can usually remove it either via launcher settings or in the same way you'd remove any other widget, ie tap and hold, then select "Remove" or drag to a trash can or similar at the top of the screen (depending on launcher).

If that method isn't available - there are some launchers that will not let your remove the search bar - try a different launcher. Evie, Microsoft, and Nova are three good ones I know of that let you get rid of the search bar (I dislike it, too!).

You might be interested to know that Samsung has an "S Launcher for Galaxy Touchwiz" on Play Store that's supposed to provide a S6-like Touchwiz feel on any Android from 4 up. You might find it a more comfortable interface.

Thank you very much.
I downloaded lawn chair and Nova launcher to try them out.
Read on a homepage that these were good ones to start with.

@ChronoMonochrome
How would I do a "bug" report about issues during loading while the phone is off?

And is a missing option - no turning off WiFi during hibernation - also done via bug report or should I just post here in the thread?

Sincerely
Julian

Just flashed your ROM. Got it running with latest TWRP and Magisk (root).
Couldnt get an sandboxing-app like "Shelter", "Insular" or "Island" to work on this ROM. Is the Android "work-profile" functioning in this ROM? Could anyone here get this running?
I used Shelter quite extensively on official LinageOS 14 without any problems.

Thank you for the link. I flashed open_gapps-arm-11.0-tvstock-20210130-TEST.zip through TWR recovery manager. After flashing the LineageOS ROM is not starting up anymore. I keep getting the loading logo. Any solutions what to do? I deleted the ROM from my internal storage so I can't flash it again.

Edit: Seems I can open the storage to upload the rom again . I start from zero again
Edit: Flashed rom again and used pico gapps from your link and got a working playstore thank you!

Good to see you got it working later on! :)

Note that you have to flash the gapps package immediately after flashing the ROM - that is, before rebooting. You had already installed the ROM and rebooted before you tried flashing the gapps. That in itself could have caused problems, but I think the main problem was that you used the "tvstock" open_gapps package, which isn't suitable for a phone. It's intended for Android TV devices.

You always have to clean-flash to upgrade the LOS version, unfortunately. You'll need to use something like the Migrate tool to transfer your existing apps, contacts, sms messages, call logs, etc to the new version. This saves you a lot of work, but doesn't completely restore the original configuration. See the [APP][ROOT][5.0+][1st Nov 2020] Migrate - custom ROM migration tool thread for more information.

It seems this is only an issue with UNofficial builds. As official builds should update without a need for a total wipe.

I'm also intrigued by the question as this kind of backup would be nice to have. Right now I don't have a clue what or how I actually have backed up anything. :/

Next I go on to detail the bugs that I have found in the rom:

- Activate screen if there are notifications does not work. When I receive notifications from WhatsApp the screen does not turn on, with android 10 it worked. The same only happens to me, if someone knows the solution, I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to solve it.

- When charging the mobile with the phone turned off, although it does load the screen it remains blocked and it is necessary to remove the battery to be able to fix it.

- The search bar on the home screen cannot be typed to search nor can it be removed. In android 10 it was not there and it was not needed.

- Android 10 had several wallpapers, this version only 1, it seems strange to me, all versions have always brought several backgrounds by default.

-When you try to lock the screen with a double tap on the status bar, the quick settings bar (the one with Wi-Fi, bluetooth, etc.) slides and does not crash. It only hangs if you do it after the quick setting bar has been lowered. This with android 10 did not happen.

- I did not have the default calculator or email application installed, in android 10 yes.

- I have noticed something slower in opening the configuration menus.

- The Wifi still does not work well, it is difficult for him to connect to the network and every so often he disconnects himself, this already worked very badly in android 10, I do not know if there will be any solution.

The developer's effort is appreciated and I don't know if it will be possible to review these bugs and try to improve them, since since 10-20-2020 there is no news or work on the project. It's a shame because I think that android 11 can be used well on this device but I don't understand why the project is abandoned later.

Greetings to all.

     */

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

    Hi all,

This is an unofficial Android 11 build for the Galaxy S3 (i9300).

The most of the ROM features are working, but the overall state might be not stable or not suitable for a daily use. This is an alpha quality build. Don't install this ROM as your daily driver.

This work is heavily based on works of forkbomb444 (thanks for device tree, kernel and device patches for LOS 14.1), rINanDO (thanks for device tree, kernel and device patches for LOS 17.1).
A huge credit goes to A$teroid, this wouldn't have been possible without his help.

    What is working:
    • Boots
    • Audio (playback && recording)
    • Bluetooth
    • Graphics
    • Camera
    • Sensors
    • RIL (SMS, mobile data, calls) - untested, probably should work
    • Wifi
    • USB
    • Video playback (HW/SW)

    What is not working:

    • GPS
    • Wifi hotspot
    • maybe yet something

    Reporting bugs

When reporting reboots, please produce log below as follows
    (using adb or terminal)
    Code:
    su
    cat /proc/last_kmsg > /sdcard/last_kmsg.txt
    and attach in this thread.

    If reporting another issues
Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred. (Please include at least a few pages of the log, not just the last few lines, unless you know what you're doing.)
A rough timestamp of when the issue occurred is also useful.

to quickly & easily capture logcat (Main log), Kernel log (dmesg) & Last Kernel log (last_kmsg which is important in case of unwanted reboot) without using a computer + adb or use a Terminal emulator on the phone:
    1. Root the phone
    2. Developer Options > Store logger data persistently on device > select All. More info about it here on developer.android.com
    3. Install the free SysLog. (screenshot)

      View attachment 4644180
    4. Reboot the phone & reproduce the problem(s).
    5. Open Syslog & select logcat, dmesg & last_kmsg. Add some significant keywords in the bottom including in Notes describing the bug & hit Take log.
    6. The individual logs + a .zip of all of them will be saved in /sdcard/Syslog. You must rename them .txt to be able to attach them to an XDA post like logcat.log > logcat_log.txt for example. Or you can choose Share which will .zip them & then you can attach to a post or upload somewhere & link to in your post if the .zip is too big for XDA's attachment service (20 MB max).
Done! And make the dev happy.
    ***

    Bug Reports & Logs?
If the phone is not rooted you can grant this permission to enable Syslog using ADB (15 seconds ADB Installer) & a computer:
    • adb shell pm grant com.tortel.syslog android.permission.READ_LOGS
You can also install an app like MatLog to analyse the logcat, filter it, search in it, export files etc but Syslog is fast & easy. If not rooted grant permission for MatLog:
    • adb shell pm grant com.pluscubed.matlog android.permission.READ_LOGS
    ***

I tested the latest version of these rom “lineage-18.1-20210624
I know it isn't final yet, but I would like to participate and display the problems you encountered. So we don’t find them in the version you participate here
1- I can’t restart or power off the phone ( you must remove battery and power on the phone )
2- charging battery light option active but not working.
3- black screen when incoming calls ( Sometimes )
4- USB Transfer file not working ( In windows not workning & Linux sometimes)
5- videos in facebook not work smoothly ( I don’t know from rom or FB. App)
6- rom sometimes froze and black screen then soft reboot automatic. (The Ram consumes 75% without any other apps )
    7- The battery consumes quickly
8- I noticed in ( system Apps Info ) similar applications in the same name ( I don’t know its normal or not )
9- multi-user not working fine , black screen when switch between users.

I apologize for the bad language, and I hope my words reach to you
Also apologized because I am a normal user and I am not a programmer

    MR @ChronoMonochrome
You did a lot for this device and developed many versions, as many words are not enough to express thanks and appreciation for your great effort, and we hope that you will complete this great project so that it will be more stable and reliable, and it may be the last update of this device..
    thank you

@rINanDO Connecting to a WPA3(-only) network does not seem to be working currently (tested with 20210608). A fix could be this commit.
