Thanks for this. Great job.
Can we have R/W system? AdAway freezes when trying to overwrite system hosts file. Basically I would be happy with your first release supporting hosts file linked to other path either even without fingerprint or camera support.
There is some kind of proctection, which I really don't know, where it comes from.
Kernel is from CAF, system from LineageOS. There is nothing from Lenovo.
Only in recovery mode you can write to system. On fastboot and normal mode its impossible.

Yeah, I like Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus, the problem is that the cheapest in my country is for $400, if I buy in Aliexpress it goes for nearly $300... and I found this tablet for just $180 (half the price!) in Amazon :)
I understand that most brand OS support is **** (including Samsung), and I definitely have a Xiaomi Pocophone F1 because they have a really great support not only in ROM dev, but good prices for replacements (screens and all that).

But If they have solved the 5Ghz issue, then I believe that we should even try in the future to go for official Lineage 16 as they did on the oldie Yoga Tab 3 Plus :)
Samsung is a really good brand. You get 3 years support and every month an update.

Lenovo brought every 3 months an update, which lead to malfunction. They fixed it after 6 months, after 2 updates. Completely 7.... They told us we would get Oreo, then they brought out Oreo for the cheap models. 10 Plus users were really disappointed. Its your decision, but they are really ****'''''''. I dont think we will get Pie update next time. My works based on lenovo msm8953 kernel and currently there is not so much movement there. And it will never be offical. I'm just happy that it works.

Yes, this is true, but Samsung hardly ever supports further upgrades within the same version. It's not like MIUI that with one mobile you might see 1 or 2 or even 3 major upgrades (its possible to go from Android 7 to 9). With Samsung luckily you will go from 7 to 8... this is why I prefer to try to mod myself or trust in the dev community with alt ROMs...

How do you think vladimiroltean got to support L16 in the oldie MSM8976 with the Yoga Tab 3 Plus?

BTW: I've bought the Tab4, I will be testing this ROM as soon as it arrives :)

I've got a similar problem. I tried installing the Magisk 17.1 r/w patch from here, but got stuck in a boot loop and had to clean install to get the tablet to boot again.

Does anyone know if there is a working 18.1 patch that we could use?

Great work on the ROM so far!

Is there any way that I can thank you financially? Buy you a coffee or whatever? @LumenReaper too. I'd given up on my TB-X704F getting any Root/Recovery/ROM let alone support from L*n*v*

The magisk module over here worked for me on stock rooted and with @matshias TWRP. Perhaps there is something in this module that can help you set System R/W by default?

Wow! I've been waiting for this - works totally fine for me. Much better than stock ROM.
Thanks yener90!
Interesting comment. I applaud anyone you takes the time and effort to offer end users a choice of firmware and have experimented many times over the years with non stock ROMs.

So I am very curious to know in what way(s) as you have stated, is it much better that stock ROM ?

Thanks in advance.

Well, just the reasons for me:
1. Smoother user experience (this is obviously subjective)
2. Less use of system space, corresponding with the possibility of using the Google Apps you want and need (maybe you could achieve this also with debloating stock ROM). One of the things I really hate with Windows, too.
3. Up to date security patches. One of the most important things to me and one of the most critical things in the Android world. Abandoned systems which get no software support anymore. I think you can count the updates for this tablet on one hand. These models have a lifespan of around two years with the behavior of the manufacturers. And that really annoys me.

So I'm really thankful for all the guys (and gals) who do this in their spare time. For a custom ROM, for a kernel that extends battery time, for a powerful recovery. :good:

Thanks for your reply.

1. I agree, very subjective though. I have found because I go to the trouble of flashing a rom I WANT to believe it is faster than stock and therefore I see it as such. But quite often upon actually running real tests on it I often find this is not the case.

2. I can usually achieve this by debloating.

3. Fully agree and would be the strongest reason I may flash it, but I find stock runs very well on it, just outdated.

Cheers.

Getting rid of preinstalled software (debloating) is not just about space, but also security. Time and time again there are cases found where stock uninstallable software would send personal data to chinese servers or anywhere else without your consent. Even over unencrypted connections. Trying to remove some of those apps will break the system or cause excessive battery usage. I can rely on LineageOS being open source - there are only essential things.
Latest Android patches take care of the rest. After that you just need to be careful about permissions allowed using Trust.

Thanks for ROM development.
Will this work for the Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus TB-8704F / 8 inch version? Not sure what's the difference except screen size.
Prefer LineageOS over official.

Ι was just going to ask, what gapps are we supposed to use with this?
According the gapps app the system is android 7.0, but the twrp does not install it because gapps for 7.0 is wrong version. With gapps for android 8.1 I get black scrren only. If I download google services from apkmirror then google services keep FC every 5 seconds.

Nope, unfortunately its completely different.

This is great news but will it work on TB-X704L?
Don't know, try it out. But before you do make a system backup. Maybe files will required for running TB-X704L.
@about System RW: i will look later into it.
The ROM comes with disabled diverity so you can do whatever you want in recovery. System will boot.
The magisk modul contains a file which should be in system folder. Maybe putting this file to system directly will mount it always RW.

I'm still working on the camera. Its much harder than expected guys. Today will be my last try. If that doesnt work, I really can't get it work then
Next version I will disable some of the debug features, which should lead to a more better performance.

I'm in without issues yet, the basics are working as expected. Have not even tried the stock ROM, after unboxing, I unlocked the bootloader straight away and installed everything without hesitation, so I can't say if its better than stock Nougat.

For anyone that has had issues with Magisk and/or GApps, my installation order was:

1. Go into TWRP and full wipe: System, cache, dalvik, Data, Internal Storage
2. Install LOS 15.1 via TWRP, then wipe dalvik
3. Start into LOS 15.1 and configure the basics
4. Back to recovery
5. Install firstly Nano Gapps ARMv8 x64
6. Install secondly latest Magisk v19
7. Reboot and ready to go.

All is working great.
Not missing the camera at all, but I'm missing the Hall Sensor because it goes really well with my magnetic case.

By the way @yener90 I have a question: what hindered you of going straightly to LOS 16?
