Had time for a little testing of browser opening time.

Set as default browser app and opened the app a few times before recording times.
Time was recorded using a stopwatch app on a different device.
Time listed is the fastest of three.

Chrome v91.0.4472.120
17.1 seconds.
Always loaded with the ads/suggestions populated.

Chrome Dev v93.0.4557.2
9.2 seconds.
Would load before the ads/suggestions populated.

Brave v1.26.74
1.7 seconds.

DuckDuckGo v5.89.1
1.8 seconds.

Note:
- The built in browser was disabled and cache/data for the built in browser was cleared.
- Browser apps were installed/updated from PlayStore.
I got the version(s) Google sets to my user account.
It did not seem to make a difference if the default browser was active and/or what browser was set as default.

Google Bits.
Google 12.25.5.23.arm64 Beta
Android System WebView 91.0.4472.120 Beta
Google Play services 21.21.16 (150406-378233385) Beta

Tested using:

crDroidAndroid-11.0-20210626-dragon-v7.7.zip
open_gapps-arm64-11.0-nano-20210622-UNOFFICIAL_TEST.zip
app-debug.apk (Magisk Canary)

Magisk - Canary - GitHub - Link

I run personal builds for testing.
You can find info and links for my test builds of crDroid and OpenGApps in the [ROM][flo|deb][UNOFFICIAL][LineageOS 18.1] -> 2021-06-10 thread.

Second note:
I normally use Brave.

It has been a while since I ran a Chromium build.
Checking out and building Chromium for Android - chromium.googlesource.com - Link

When I get time, I will sync the source and make a build to test.
- I am guessing it will be as quick or quicker than Brave.

Will have to grab logs and see what is going on.

Cheers all. :cowboy:

Very nice. I love Brave browser, but I am not able to play videos. Any particular settings that you use?
I never actually tested video in browser(s).. 🙃
Since I am using the Nvidia Hardware codec.
Only tested the browser opening speed. ;)

Still have the video/codec issue with browser. :(

Just checked YouTube, videos are playing in Brave.
m.youtube.com a bit pixilated.

Both Netflix and HBO Now try to open the app.
I was able to log into Netflix in Brave but, playback opens in the app.
HBO Now, will not let me log in using Brave, instead it kicks me to PlayStore to install the app.
Netflix app is installed, HBO Now is not.

Other sites like BBC News, sky News, ..
Video will not play. :(

We have switched back to Nvidia Hardware decoders/encoders.
Pls rename/remove "/vendor/lib/libnvomx.so" and reboot to use Google Software codecs.
I made a quick Magisk Module to revert to software codec.
GitHub - Link
Overlays a zero byte file.

Reverting to software decoding fixed playing in browser but, the Netflix and YouTube app suffered.
Lower resolution and/or a bit pixilated.
Did not check video in other apps.

If you are using a browser, enable the module and reboot.
The module will force software decoding.

If you want to sit down, watch Netflix (or something else) using a dedicated app, disable the module and reboot.
You will be back to hardware decoding.

Cheers. :cowboy:

Thanks, the Module working. But the sound is a little choppy. I guess that happens without the codecs. Thank you!

Feasibility of Miracast backport for Pixel 4a

- Backport of Wifi-Display (Miracast) for Android 11
Hi @followmsi,

I hope it is not too bold to post my wish in this thread.

I came across your posts about your successful backport of Miracast when searching for the term on Pixel devices, i.e. the Pixel 4a. I am not an Android developer myself and that is why I am asking for your estimate/judgment:

Do you think it is feasible for a LineageOS device maintainer to port Miracast back onto a Pixel 4a?

If yes, could you please provide some code references so that a developer can pick up work from there?

Thank you in advance for your answer and also thank you for all the time you invested in maintaining an out-of-support Android device!

Best wishes,

wireroot

Hey,

first a big thank you for the port to my Pixel C it is so nice to see this thing running wiht the latest version of Android.

One thing I noticed was that on occasion the screen looks like has an overlay and I cannot scroll left or right anymore. The only move I can make is upwards for the recent app drawer and downwards to get to the settings. Beyond that the screen is again blocked with an overlay.

Any idea how I can fix that or how I could find out what is interfering there?

thx

Here you can find the sources for the backport of "standard" miracast in Lineage-18.1 ..

"Standard" version seems to work well on Tegra and Exynos devices.
Normally QCOM devices do have custom WifiDisplay / Miracast implementation.

Good luck !

I noticed this also. I don't know what it is, but if connect a mouse the cursor changes to the pointing finger near the middle of the screen like there is an invisible button there. Clicking it dismisses the overlay thing.

Thanks for the hint.

Next time I will connect my mouse and start the search around the middle of the screen. I do assume however that this resolved the issue for the single occurance - right? - and not permanently?

Right, it deals with it temporarily. Just today I tried tapping the screen near the middle and got it to go away. Might have gotten lucky with my aim, I'm not sure how large the target is.

Just want to say a big thank you to @followmsi for their efforts in keeping this tablet alive. I've got a Tab S6 and it's crazy how much faster it can be at multitasking... but I keep coming back to the Pixel C. It's fundamentally a more thought-out experience, held back by poor choices and paltry features, and somehow more enjoyable to use (well, when it's working).

TWRP loop for me. Installs with no errors but won't boot into the os

I did a dirty (coming from AOSP 7.1.2) and then clean install. Haven't factory refreshed yet.

Tried wiping again and flashing back to aosp and having the same issue.

Any thoughts?

edit: now trying to pull some data off my tablet to do a full wipe, i dont NEED to do this, but would like to...but twrp wont recognize MTP on my system (win 10) ... problems problems today
Lineage needs a clean install. TWRP Wipe System data leave the internal. If your installing gapps be sure to resize system partition first. Always boot to recovery for each step.

Thank you for continue this ROM.
I have installed it yesterday and it looks good.
My first issue: I can not move or stretch the widgets.

I fond it: With "HW-Overlays disable" seems to be working.

    Known issues:

    - Encryption seems not to work - and has not been tested. -> Pls do not encrypt your data partition yet !
    - Keymaster -> If you set Pattern, PIN or Password the Screen unlock may not work correctly.
