Is it ok to ask a question here? I see you are using kernel 3.4. Is lollipop using 3.10 or 3.14? I'm just wondering what difference any of these kernels make?

There are two main linux kernels used on android devices, 3.4 and 3.1. The main linux kernel version that you're using is determined by your device. Jewel has always and will always use 3.4, from ICS through Lollipop.

There is a third set of digits that come after the 3.4 though. Improvements and bug fixes to that kernel are issued through a patch. CM was on 3.4.82 for an eternity. Every time a patch is applied, the official (linux.org) kernel is bumped up a number. CM recently applied patches to the kernel used by jewel, which bumped the kernel up to 3.4.105.

A strange thing happened somewhere within that code, which causes lag and/or frequent force-closing and random reboots on Jewel with Lollipop. The strangest thing about this is that DU and Bubba kernel had no issues at all at 3.4.105 with KitKat. It's causing fits with LP though. CM is miserable at 3.4.105 as are my most of my recent Half-Popped custom kernel builds (I made the mistake of assuming CM waited so long to patch because they had found a fix to those issues, so I cherry-picked all of those CM patches). DU seems to be handling it best out of all of the 3.4.105 kernels, but that's nearly unusable after a few days too.

Which kernel you use can make a HUGE difference. You might get a day and a half of battery life out of one kernel, but 4 hours out of another. The crazy thing is that it's possible for the battery sucking kernel to be choppy and slow, but the kernel that gives you a day and a half may be quick and silky smooth.

A good custom kernel gives the user as much control over those variables as possible. You'll be able to configure it to give you long battery life and great performance, but you could also screw up your settings enough to suck the life out of your battery and get terrible performance. Kernels can also allow you to do things with your device that aren't otherwise possible. Double tap to wake is a feature that allows you to wake your device by double tapping on the screen. This is not possible with any of the stock kernels. I could go on, but you've most likely lost interest already. Hope this helps.

No I haven't lost interest. I have a certain familiarity with Linux. I use it exclusively for my laptop except when something forces me to use windows, which isn't often. I recently restored my default windows onto a spare hard drive just in case I ever need it again. I had wanted to try win droid and need it for that as I couldn't get it to run under wine. I may try that again under wine after installing .net 4.

I was under the impression that for lollipop to be lollipop, google used a specific kernel and applied certain tweaks to that kernel that weren't found In the one released by Linus Torvalds, so I was confused to see Linux kernel 3.4 being used in many of the lollipop unofficial roms. Every version of Linux I ever tried was always given a code name but it also came with a specific Linux kernel. This is the first in Linux that I saw a newer code name using the kernel from the prior code name.

I would very much like to have that extra ninety minutes of battery life. My one main nit for all these custom roms is that I very much like the themes and wallpapers that come with the stock roms over the custom roms. I also so far prefer the stock lock ring over the other padlocks. Yes they operate the same and do the same thing but these little personality traits of the stock rom were part of why I chose this phone, because by default, it had customization and little personality traits that I liked. I know you guys work very hard in your spare time to make these custom roms and I believe you do a lot to improve the performance over the stock roms and I am thankful for that. I'm just trying to understand how this all works as it seems different to me than my desktop experience with Linux.

Thank you for you thoughtful explanation and your time and your hard work. It is all much appreciated.
