I just want to make sure this works before I pull the plug on it. I do not see why it would not work, but I am just being cautious. I currently have a VS996 with US99820B installed. Am I able to dirty flash this? If not dirty flash, clean flash?

Flash it like you would a ROM. Clean flash is best.

The instructions say you can try dirty flashing, but if you're coming from another variant like US998 that's at your own risk.

Make TWRP backup first. Make sure you're on the most recent TWRP listed in the WTF instructions.

I clean flash every different Rom. Going from 998 to 996 or vice versa, clean flash. Going from dotos to RR or to aex or whatever, I clean flash. That's the way I was taught to avoid any unexpected problems.

The first app I install from the play store is titanium backup pro. I then restore all my other apps (about 30 or so) from there.

My phone is originally a Verizon vs996.

Yep. Clean flashing is the way to go, for sure. However, there's no harm in trying to dirty flash and seeing if it works and how he likes the ROM. At best, you're good to go! At worst, you find something not working and clean flash.

Noob question: just went from LS998 to US998 to VS998 using Frankenstein. I installed Magisk in the process to root; however, when I installed Titanium backup it says it didn't have root. Do I need to flash encryption disabler and root disabler in order to get root? I'm not sure what I missed.
TIA

There's a thread about installing Titanium Backup and getting it to recognize Magisk root. I'll find it.

Here you go:

I just bought an ebay refurbished LS998 V30+ that came with US998 nougat installed.

Im looking to convert to VS996 for use on Verizon, and update to Oreo. Do I just follow the process described in the OP?

Thanks for all your support

Please clarify...
Besides converting to VS996 Oreo, do you also want to unlock bootloader and root, or only convert to VS996 with Oreo?

Thanks for the quick reply Chazz!

No need for root, just wanting to get the up to date Oreo installed and the VS996 rom installed to avoid voiecmail and MMS issues.

OK, for that goal -- with your US998 Nougat -- then all you need is to use Dev Patched LGUP and flash latest VS996 KDZ from this thread:

https://xdaforums.com/lg-v30/development/vs996-lg-v30-verizon-vs996-t3865398

Dev Patched LGUP is attached to post #1 of that thread. Pay attention on how/where to install. Use DL PARTITION mode to flash. You also may need to Master Reset, but maybe not.

At this point in time, VS996 20G in that thread is the latest KDZ.

You're basically doing Frankenstein, but to VS996. You can go straight from Nougat US998 to Oreo VS996.

For future KDZ updates past VS996 20G, you will use Dev Patched LGUP in "Upgrade" mode and will keep all your data, etc. But this first time to convert to VS996, you need to overwrite the partitions. So this first time you will wipe all your data.

________

If you had wanted bootloader unlock and root, you would have upgraded temporarily from your US998 Nougat to early US998 Oreo (20A or 20B), then flashed our WTF bootloader unlock code, installed TWRP and rooted. THEN, you would have flashed a VS996 TWRP-flashable zip "ROM" (similar to the one in this thread) to finish converting to VS996 while still keeping TWRP custom recovery. Then, reflash Magisk.

The VS996 20D "ROM" in this thread is just a TWRP-flashable version of the VS996 20D KDZ, but is not the most current firmware. We have a TWRP-flashable ZIP of VS996 20G... But you will not be using that since you will not have bootloader unlock and TWRP. Instead you will just be flashing the VS996 20G KDZ.

    LG-VS996 20D ROM
    Hello everyone

Users have requested that i can make a flashable Zip for the VS996. Hope it will be supported as with my other roms.

Rom ist Untested. Use it at your own risk! When somebody Tell me it Works then I will edit it

This Rom is 100% Stock. TWRP 3.2.1-0 must first be installed as with Nougat Roms. Then you can install this Rom and have Oreo with working TWRP.

This zip is created from the original KDZ. I changed the Boot.img, so you do not have to reinstall TWRP. . . ;)

I had made this for users who can not get ota's because they have Custom Recovery / Root installed

Sorry for my bad english i'm out of practice :p

    Features
*Stock build made from official KDZ
    *Stock Build.prop
    *Unrooted
    *Boot.img modified to keep TWRP
    *Remove dm-verity
    *Remove forceencrypt
    Installation
    What you need
    *Unlocked Bootloader [How to do]
*Working TWRP installed [Link to unofficial TWRP]
*When you need Root, Latest Magisk [Download]
    *VS99620D(TWRP).zip [Download]

    How to install
When you are on Nougat: Reboot to recovery using button combo or reboot app (need root)
flash this TWRP.img Download reboot and Backup Dalvik,ART, Cache, System & Data (include not your internal memory) and Boot
in to your external sd or copy the backup from internal sd to your PC!
From Oreo: Install TWRP with this guide but with this img
For clean install: Wipe Dalvik/ART, Cache, System and Data (Recommend)
You can also keep your data by dirty flashing the zip. *Not tested!!!*
    Flash VS99620D(TWRP).zip
then Magisk zip when you need root
    Reboot System

At the first time you boot to system, it can be TWRP says No OS installed. You can ignore it.
If TWRP asks if you want to install SU, hit no

Here you can find my other [Downloads.] There are IMG´s, KDZ´z and more!

And out of curiosity if I would have taken the OTA does anything with recovery happen? Or, would it have just failed?

    1) Full image firmware is always better than partial image OTA. Much safer since your are installing the entire firmware. Even if you're not bootloader unlocked and have no desire to do so.

    2) With TWRP custom recovery, an OTA will (hopefully) never install. At best, it would wipe out TWRP to replace with stock recovery and you would also lose root. At worst, if it halfway installed, it could brick your phone.

Good news is it should fail to install. But you should freeze all the OTA stuff with Titanium Backup.

Over in the Droid Turbo forum we warned people to NEVER take OTA updates. Never. Even those not rooted who didn't want to root. To wait for the full image to be released. Much safer. We saw bricks with bad OTA updates. So, after three years over there it's strange over here to see people trying to install OTAs. It's like Bizarro world.

Per usual ChazzMatt comes through with the knowledge. Thanks! I've been lurking since my Droid Turbo days and you were clutch then too.
