Wow! This post was "academically" interesting before, but became really important to me after I tested the newest CM10.1 nightlies and then restored my nandroid backup of the latest Shostock3.
After restoring, I had "can't write to internal disk," and "disk full" errors for business calendar, some camera apps and trying to download to sdcard0. Disk was pretty empty disk, phone is a recent replacement (worked well!) so memory chip should be good. . .
I re-read p.chi's post on his solution --to re-format the cache-- and that was one step I had not done. I had cleared it perhaps five or six time, but never re-formatted it! This time I re-formatted it ....and it worked! Or seemed to... but then on rebooting, the problem reappeared.
Next I cleared and re-formatting the system partition, the clearing and formatting the cache, then clearing and re-formatting sdcard0/internal memory (several times --including trying to format sdcard0 to fat32 via my computer -not very successfully, although it appeared to work).
Did a fresh reinstall of Shostock3.
When I finally got the phone running and rom reinstalled, I had a notification stating sdcard0 was damaged, "do you want to format it"? I said yes, and the phone reformatted the internal memory -again! Only this time it finally seems to have worked. Several reboots later. . . (fingers crossed) it appears that my Shostock3 is back to normal, with everything is saving and accessing perfectly! I only wish I had kept a precise log of each step, how many times, and in which sequence I took them --just in case!
It was a lesson to me (aside from reading more carefully) that different formats appear to be used by CM10.1 (4.2.2) and Shostock3 (4.1.2). This makes flashing back-and-forth between them tricky. Perhaps an element in this may be that CM's approach or file system used is different enough to make changing between the two ROMs not seamless.
This has been a "forced" lesson for me on how the android file system is evolving or being used /applied differently in different rom versions /cases as well! (the ext3 vs. ext4 approaches to file systems seem to be quite important to our phones and the roms we use.)
