I am not sure .. I got mine like this .. Bought it like 2-3 months ago .. :)

Last time I opened the upgrade tool it started downloading something then timed out after 1:30 hours .. :(

But in any case .. Decided am going to wait for the official launch with OTA ..

So, I was browsing the vast internets, and came across an incredibly invaluable resource anyone here can use: The sources for the Alcatel/TCL roms!

6040A Source
6040D Source
6040E Source

Downloading the 6040A files, I want to try playing around with it if I can. I'm not incredibly skilled, but I'm so curious with these...

Edit: Curious, but does the current recovery for the 6040D also work with the 6040A? I'd like to make 100% sure before I go and flash it to my phone.

Nonononono do not flash this whatever you do. This is not a rom. It's the source that makes the rom. Flashing it in its current state will either

a. Make your device run out of memory (I'm not sure how large the uncompressed source is)
b. 100% likely softbrick your system.

You need to build it first. However, since this is code, you can pull parts of it out, modify it, build it, and put it into your system.

Stock Alcatel Idol X 6040D 4.2.2. vs. 1001

You can find in the link below the backup made by me today after restoring with Alcatel Mobile Upgrade. Just update to the recovery attached in the zip file, extract the clockworkmod folder in the root of the sdcard, factory reset and restore.

Nothing deleted (not even the crappy bundled games), just added Kinguser root and Mobiuncle Tools.

link deleted

If you remove root and flash the stock recovery I guess you can receive OTA updates.

Going back to stock will be almost a thing of the past now that we have rom sources. We have all the drivers and whatnot to be able to build custom roms that work to a decent degree.
