Can I pick someone's ear on rooting and installing ROM's for a minute? I'm tech savvy, but this will be my first Android modification and ROOT/ROM process.

Why am I here? I'm trying to root an Alcatel one touch Idol X 6040A and then install the most functional ROM that's higher than the 4.2.1 JB version I already have. AFAIK VROOT is the best option although some people still have issues afterward regarding ROM installations and Network connectivity.

I have yet to find a tutorial specific to the OT 6040A with positive feedback, so I'm very reluctant and hesitant to attempt this until I've done ALL of my homework.

Can someone possibly direct me to definitive ROOTing and ROM installation instructions that have been verified to work?

EDIT : I see the Kit Kat just so you know.

It feels like everyone is avoiding the 6040A. :(

I would appreciate it if at least one person was able to provide some information on this. Please go to this thread to talk about the 6040A specifically. Thanks.

So I had my phone sent out to a company (The place I got the phone at, who was run by the company I sent it to, Glentel) for repair, but sent it back unrepaired so I could send it to my phone provider for repair. I'm not sure if anyone else has this issue, but the device likes to crash and reboot all the time on stock. Like, it's completely random, but it just completely crashes and reboots. It works fine after though, except for the last time this happened. These crashes happen very infrequently though.

This time is a bit different though. It crashed, then rebooted as per usual, but now it's crashing a whole ton more. Like, it will crash at any possible time. It can crash when the device is booting (When it shows Alcatel/Smart Move boot logo or the blue Android logo), when the lock screen first appears, or any time after, totally randomly, and it does this enough to the point that the device is almost completely unusable. Has anyone else had a crashing issue like this before? It's nothing I've ever seen. I've used everything in my arsenal to fix it, including factory resetting, using Mobile Upgrade S to restore, removing the Sim/MicroSD card, absolutely nothing fixes the crashing.

And these new crashes are unusual, too. They completely lock up the device, and if any sounds are playing, they'll be stuck on the particular tone that was playing at that exact moment, and if you let it sit for a minute, it just eventually shuts itself off on its own.
this looks like hardware issue, wife had similar problem with random crashing, problems with booting, we send it back to TCL and they replaced motherboard, although I suspected in the beginning just some software issue

So in the OP, apparently Gravitybox works, but I can't seem to get it to work, it just bootloops my phone. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix it?

I went to the GB JB page and talked with the developer about it, but he can't see anything wrong in my logs as to what's causing the error.
You wouldn't happen to know where I can get a 6040A stock ROM?

I'm stuck in a boot loop as well and I don't think my titanium backup will restore everything like I want it to.

if bootloop was caused by Xpossed + GravityBox, you can disable xpossed during boot
there is a hardware key combination to disable it
right after first logo, when bootanimation starts, press one hardware button, phone will vibrate long
then press key 5 more times. it should start with xpossed disabled.
regards.

I came across this solution and it didn't work. I had to reset to factory defaults.

Live and learn. :) Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, when I got my phone back from Virgin Mobile, the repair slip mentioned replacing the logic board. I thought it was software at first until I saw that. I heard from some people I talked to that apparently it was under recall for that or something. I'm surprised a bug as large as that was not found in the hardware or software.

Edit: So I'm trying to find a recovery image that I can actually work with. Carliv Touch is great, but it doesn't back up the custpack directory, which can lead to issues when restoring. Meanwhile, CWM backs up custpack, but cannot access the SD card, making rom installation difficult. Is there a recovery that can do both?

Also, @BZzzz3, you linked the original CWM back at the very beginning of this thread. Is there an updated version that can access the SD as well as back up custpack anywhere on 4PDA?

Here is an app to underclock/overclock MTK6589/T Mediatek devices same as Idol X
It has to be flashed with CWM.

I wonder if someone can translate it from Chinese to English, mainly the MTKTweak.apk app inside?

Thanks
Have you over clocked your phone yet?

Has anyone tried to over clock yet? If so how can i? Using the 6040a

Try to charge your phone using the OEM charger and cable for at least 5 minutes. Make sure your phone is turn off then download Mobile Upgrade Tool S from alcatel or you can use your spft. Follow the normal procedure for the spft or if you use Mobile Upgrade Tool S then follow the instruction given on when to switch on your phone. I was having similar problem when i was about to flash it using spft , the notification light is turned on but it doesn't get detected by the pc. Only realize it after i send it to the shop where they recharge it before processing my warranty claim. As it turned out, the phone battery is completely dead which cause the pc to fail to detect it.

It happened after continuos boot-loop. I suspect that it could be cause the previous update from playstore namely droidvpn or map. Does that happen to you when you updating your apps?

It still won't work. Tried to charge it for more than 5 minutes, still it can't be detected. So sad. RIP phone I guess, the only way to revive this is to JTAG i think. Thanks btw.
