incrementally

OdinsEyepatch---I'm sure you have tried a different computer with a different usb cable right.

Just for forensics,
How many times have you flashed your phone with different ROM's. Could it be that some data was left on your phone from other ROM's.

I don't know .Just a thought.
When I took the OTA update from Verizon I started on 4.1.1. They gave me the updates incrementally. 4.1.2 then they sent 4.3 then 4.4.2.
Those may not be the exact numbers but they did not try to update the phone in one flash.

I'm thinking that if you may have missed a step in the upgrade and you may not have got the total package.

For what its worth. I just rooted my device yesterday with GhettoRoot. I tried 3.1 but the busybox wasn't working and manually downloading did not help So I tried ver 0.2.2 and same problems. The installer took me through everything and said root successful but after reboot superuser still wasn't installed. So I put my device in download mode and factory reset. Set the phone up enabled developer options fired up ghettoroot 2.2 and viola success

I am so envious of those of you that got this to work...for whatever reason it won't push the files to my phone...I have tried different cables, different ports, an any other tricks posted in this thread except for factory reset which I just don't have time to mess with right now.

For whatever reason, I've been unable to get this to work.

Originally, ghettoroot 0.3.2 would go through and run through the motions, saying it is finished, and has installed SuperSU, but it was not on my device, and had not been rooted after reboot.

Next, I tried a factory reset, and device driver install for Koush's drivers.
However now, it isn't even able to push the files needed for the install.

I can provide a debug file for the current issue.

Also, I tried 0.2.2, just to see if a previous version would somehow work, and no luck. 0.2.2. won't even detect my phone.

GhettoRoot

For whatever reason, I've been unable to get this to work.
I rooted two different phones.
I don't even know which version I used .I got it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55210343&postcount=27
The first phone I rooted went pretty quick.
I went through hell with the second phone . I right clicked Run As Administrator both adb and GhettoRoot I tried using the driver Verizon loaded and several I got off Google. At times i was having a adb problem at other times usb debugging would not ask for authorization.
Then I got the idea to power the phone off and do a recovery reset and wipe and partition wipe. I restarted the Computer and the phone and plunged in the usb several times the debugging ask for permission and to my surprise GhettoRoot started doing it's magic. The phone rebooted and I got nothing. I ran GhettoRoot again the phone reboot and I had Root.

I think it was loading the wrong drivers until the last try.
EDIT: someone should be able to take a screen shot of the device manager with the proper drivers loaded.

Its actually quite easy, all you need are the drivers and the ghettoroot I used was v2. Give another shot, it works!

Contrary to what you may believe, some people are still having issues making Ghettoroot work, myself being one of them. There are many differences to be accounted for between the different Note 2 versions. It's not "quite easy" for everyone. I can see that another user has gotten the same error messages as myself, which implies that there is some issue that has not yet been addressed. If anyone resolves the error about not pushing files, please post your findings. To answer the previous question, I've flashed a custom firmware to my phone one time, but all other updates were OTA prior to the flash. The newest OTA update replaced all previous firmware information. Also, OTA firmware updates aren't incremental, though I can see how one might come to that conclusion, so all information is present and accounted for. You could go from any of the previous android firmware to the newest update without having to download each one in between. Imagine how tedious that would be. I can only hope that someone with the necessary coding skills picks up this project where the OP left off. Surely one of the many talented dev's on xda can make something of this, as it seems to be near completion. If I make any progress with my phone, I'll be sure to post my findings.

Update: ROOTED! Okay, so here's the deal for anyone getting the "couldn't push files..." error message, or at least what finally worked for me. I don't know about you, but I was having a lot of issues with the RSA fingerprint verification message only occasionally popping up on my phone, which it appears is CRUCIAL to success. Without that popup, your phone won't allow access by your computer, or the ADB service Ghettoroot runs in. This will result in a "device not found" error message, so make sure you have your computers RSA fingerprint verified. This is how I got it to work. Download and run Ghettoroot V.0.3.2. This version didn't root my phone, but it did bring up the RSA fingerprint verification on my device. Click the box to always allow this computer, then click accept. Next, download NetworkingPro's (thank you so much) polished version of Ghettoroot found here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55210343&postcount=27 . Run NetworkingPro's polished version of Ghettoroot, aaaaaand... VOILA! ROOTED!

After Much trial and error, I finally managed to get my phone rooted.
I ended up using the version here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55210343&postcount=27, which doctor-cool referenced to. At first I had trouble having it recognize my phone, but after re-authorizing my computer with the 0.3.2 version, and then running the version linked in this post twice, I finally rebooted with root capability.

Thanks everyone for your assistance.

I have tried about 30 times already as I posted earlier....I tried ever "trick" that was posted in this thread except a factory reset....and that's because I don't have time to reset up my phone with all the work I have going on....I was hoping someone had a trick that they used that hasn't been mentioned yet

So, now that that's out of the way, on to phase 2. Has anyone had any luck unlocking the bootloader for this device? Being rooted is great, but flashing a custom rom is half the fun of a rooted device. As I understand, this is not yet possible on ND7, which I attempted with Odin before rooting. It's my understanding that your bootloader must be unlocked before you can flash custom firmware. Your bootloader is to your phone what BIOS is to a pc. It's the service that runs before the operating system, or in this case, the firmware. Anyway, please direct me to any links regarding this issue. As we have all successfully rooted our devices, this seems like the next logical step. Thank you.

To be quite honest, I really don't need to flash a rom anymore with Xposed mods growth. I can get all the customization I want without relying on someone else to update a rom. Don't get me wrong...if the bootloader WAS unlocked I would be trying roms again. But I am in no dyer need at this time. Just happy to have root, get my tethering working again as well as a few other choice mods...

My question is with the locked bootloader can we flash TWRP with Odin? It's been a while so I forgot how this worked with KNox & custom recoveries. I know I had to use safestrap before to flash a rom but can't recall how I ran the recovery...

Thanks. This fixed the device not found issue for me. Can finally save to my SD card again.

your bootloader is more akin to your bios than DOS.same with firmware and recovery... it's like they split the bios into three parts.

We're on ND7. Ghettoroot utilizes an exploit in the ND7 bootloader. If you're not on ND7, it won't work.

Well, I've come to accept it. Our beloved Note 2 has gone the way of the cavemen and is now considered "old". It appears that the dev's are neither willing nor interested enough to put in the work it will take to unlock the bootloader on this "archaic" device. This news comes as a supreme disappointment. I've only had this phone for 2 years, and considering all the new features it possessed and the hefty price tag, I had expected it to last at least 5. I guess that's just technology for you, 6 months and it's obsolete. However, some of us can't afford a new device every 6 months. I would be willing to bet most of us. Aside from the dev's apparently. So thank you, for all the "hard work" you won't be putting into it. When I do buy a new device, I won't be coming here. A word of advice to anyone reading, DO NOT ACCEPT THE OTA UPDATES. Ever. Once the work is done to root/unlock and a new batch of devices comes out, you will undoubtedly be in the same boat. Oddly, even sizable bounties posted here aren't enough incentive.

If you Google 25yvdgpo06 you will find more GhettoRoot tutorials . One thing new I found that has not been mentioned here is they say you need to

Enable installation of apps from Unknown Sources: Open phone’s Settings » select Security » Tick the “Unknown sources” checkbox (under Device administration section)
