i want to root my wife's note 2 that is still on android 4.4.2 with the goal to update it to marshmallow at least.

i have a couple of questions first...
- when i root the phone do i lose all the data? if yes, can i easily restore the data with a back up using something like Samsung SmartSwitch?
- so once rooted how do i update it to marshmallow? do i need a custom ROM??

thanks

Actually files, photos, music etc on internal storage or sdcard never gets erased . Only apps and data of apps (like chat of whatsapp if not backed up) is erased. Also contacts messages and logs are erased.

You can root a phone without loosing internal storage or any data.

But if you want to install custom rom, then its highly recommended to backup contents on internal storage (you donot loose content on internal storage, but there is always a risk) so its good to have an initial backup. And app data and contacts, msg, logs are always erased so its mandatory to backup those. Also taking a backup of efs partition is highly recommend as at times when phone cant detect sim (or any other network issue persists), efs comes handy.
Thats all for some basic initial knowledge.
You can find the roms compatible with your model at at&t forums that my buddy linked on above post.
