Except that isn't always the case. Having run pre-release engineering kernels from cupcake-marshmellow I have a little experience in this area, and outside of VERY early days G/Nexus/Pixel never exhibited a problem like this so I find it a bit surprising.

Forgive me for putting the thread in the wrong place, I guess I deserved that for trying putting related things together. Why does it feel like I'm being dragged into a pissing contest?

I was just trying to help people out, maybe I just shouldnt bother.

Mods can move the threads wherever it doesn't matter to me.
didnt mean to offend u lol simply saying a debug boot is a debug boot, not meant for daily use.. i kno the s7 and note 7 had a number of issues as well as even when i had my v20 with debug kernel lol

i think we can all agree our end goal/fix would be stock official boot.img rooted

---------- Post added at 10:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:22 PM ----------

to add, these boot images arent test/pre release images.. they are official releases designed for 3rd party stores/vendors to modify certain partitions and some repairs

It's all good man, I'm probably more frustrated than normal and I've been trying to get around stock kernel boot all last night and today. I haven't given up on it either, and I think I'm close to figuring out at least where it's happening (I THINK it's a dtb config thing as they absolutely differ both in both boot.imgs and on the parts of mine in ram accessible via /sys in pieces). Anyway not giving up!

To anyone who is still getting green screens reply to the thread with whatever systrm build you are on and will snag the equivalent combo firm if you want to try that. Dunno if it will be any better but it's worth a shot if you want to

@wildermjs8 quick question for this update...

I have substratum, some overlays and unofficial Xposed installed on my T-Mobile S8 plus.

Do i need to uninstall all the mods before flashing this?
Does the update work with the unofficial Xposed?

Just want to be 100% sure before I jump down this road, and thabk you for your find and hard work!!!!

I enclosed a pic of my baseband and build numbers :)

Absolutely not necessary. The files you flash touch nothing but the kernel and root filesystems which you can't mod even if you want to (and boot ur system again anyway) given the current state of the world

HOWEVER

You are on a pretty old build by standards around here (AQDE, when the latest is AQH* or AQG* depending on your carrier) so its possible you won't see things get rock solid 100% better, but they will improve a lot.

I suggest getting ready to do a wipe/upgrade as soon as is reasonable (I know it's a pain etc) to make sure things go smoothly. It's not too hard to pull off if you have good backups. Personally for a system upgrades I use a combination of titanium backup and flashfire partitions (effective for internal storage) and it's more painful than a pure FF restore but it's not terrible.

And another bonus is you might also eliminate the green screen like I have :)

ok I flashed this and my baseband is the same but the kernel version shows sept 4th ... is that the only difference we will see?
Your kernel is upgraded and so are your root filesystem files but that isn't really surfaced anywhere. The kernel is the big important piece with this one.

(Edit: also your device tree configuration used to boot arm systems but its not something you notice unless it's horribly broken which it isn't. Wanted to be accurate this time lol)

So where would I find my latest t-mobile update?
Also, I do a "full" FF backup minis the bootloader and a full titanium app backup with data.
What are your backup and restore methods to get me to where my phone is right now with a upgraded build?
Also, what would my process be of updating to the latest build? Just a FlashFire flash?
Pm me please if you have time as I know I have a lot of questions that don't belong here and could use a little help.

Basically I want to upgrade and still use my Substratum, Overlays and Unofficial Xposed :)

I am going to flash this right now tho! Hope to hear from you soon!

Wait wtf nevermind I'm a complete idiot I SWEAR I saw aqd* on your screenshot but I just looked again and its aqg. UGH sorry for the false alarm you are up to date and will be fine. My bad!

EDIT: I figured out how I messed up! I saw your baseband version

Good news is that running aqg on aqd baseband absolutely WILL give you give you issues in many cases so having up to date kernel/rootfs should make your experience a LOT better

You will likely want to upgrade your radio to AQG2 as well, at least I think baseband comes from that. Check it once again after flashing boot.img and if it still says aqd2 I'll help you find the modem.bin file you need. It's also a no wipe doesn't touch anything you touch upgrade and should be painless

Thank you very much. I was a little bummed that I was going to have to start from scratch again lol, but I know it has to be done every now and again.
I flashed your new boot.img and will see how it helps out, if any! Am I correct by backing up a "full" FF backup minus the 2 bootloader checks? And an app and data backup in TiBu?

Thank you for your work and help brother!

To guard against bad flashes/bootloops I just use FF. Restoring everything but the 2 bls will restore your whole system to how it was at time of backup, and it's a lot faster than all other methods ive used that will take userdata (thus far anyway :) )

I explicitly do the TB thing when I'm upgrading (you're on the latest consumer build)

Although next time I'm gonna try the flashfire adb backup format. I had really good luck with it when I could get adb to write a non corrupted backup, so it might be a better way of putting stuff back. TB does it 99% right but the 1% is enough to be annoying if you are testing destructive changes
