Root for all models that don't have it...

Just be content with root. Custom roms maybe a whole different ball game requiring special recovery and tweaks rom developers need to include.
I have the H870 which has lots of custom ROMS. The reason I can't unlock is because of my region. But from what I've read is that my H870 has the exact same hardware of the European model.

@runningnak3d I would like to root my lg-h873 if you could forward that info to me please :cowboy:
?If it was ready for public release it would be available already. It will be released when/if Brian thinks it's ready. Think of the hundreds of G6's which could unintentionally be permanently bricked if everything wasn't correct. Patience...unless you want to brick your G6

The Sprint G6 that @engMTW is loaning me should be here today which means I will be able to get started tomorrow. Since I have already solved HOW to do it, and just need to make sure that the steps are in the right order and as easy as possible to understand, it shouldn't take me long to get something written up. I will also be scripting as much as possible so all you have to do is type:

Code:
./step1.sh

* Do some manual stuff then...

./step2.sh
etc...

Bottom line, this is REAL close finally :)

Hello Brian

Would this method work with the H870 as well?

Dunno. It will be a matter of trying it, but it may require a donor H870 that has an unlock.bin -- not sure yet. The good news is that it either works or doesn't. It isn't going to brick your phone to try.

Hopefully it works. I'm even willing to risk bricking because I don't see myself sticking to LG's skin for too long.

LG's skin is indeed gross. About as bad as it gets on Android phones sold in the west. Probably the only skin worse is MIUI.

Phone has been delivered, by the way :D

Yeah it's awful. I can't believe a phone with a Snapdragon 821 can stutter this much. Even Subway Surfers stutters a lot which is unacceptable. If there's a way to unlock the bootloader I'll instantly get rid of LG's heavy skin.

It's a ridiculous skin in so many ways. It's full of the dumbest **** imaginable, like powering on the phone no matter what if a charger is connected while the phone is off. Even if you power the phone off after plugging in the charger, it powers back on. Not every regional variant of the G6 does this and the 'skin' controls it - flashing Lineage kills it.

It also has lots of straight up grammatical and spelling errors throughout the interface. Go to Settings - General - Regulatory and Safety, you can learn about how "A radio interference is possible while using this wireless equipment". I expect better English from no name Chinese OEMs. LG is a massive company! They can do better than this!

But, yeah, in addition to being of poor taste and chock full of weird design decisions, the skin is super heavy. Some variants are worse than others - LS993 runs way worse than H873 due to the always-running Sprint bloat. But none run as well as they should.

Yeah I was annoyed when I switched off my phone to charge it only to see it turn on and boot into the system. I absolutely love this phone, but LG's skin ruins it for me. I bought it like a week ago and it's already lagging meanwhile my midrange Huawei P8 Lite 2017 runs rock solid on a custom ROM that I've been running as a daily driver for like 5 months now. If I knew I'd have trouble unlocking this phone's bootloader I wouldn't have opted for this phone, but since I have it now and have experienced LG's UI I won't rest until I find a way to get rid of it!

We should have things fairly easy once we have bootloader unlock. The Sprint model (LS993) is the same phone as AS993, the C-Spire variant. It is not the same phone as H873 - it has a different radio - yet it takes a cross flash to H873 just fine. The only reason an unrooted LS993 won't flash to US997 is because of a partition size difference. I have a feeling that we will be able to use roms built for US997 just fine, so long as don't care about CDMA support. And if CDMA support is needed, the AS993 modem should take care of that.

We'll see.

I have the H870, but because I live in South Africa I can't unlock. Hopefully Brian's method would work with my variant as well.

Also, none of our cellular networks use CDMA as far as I remember so it shouldn't be an issue.
