I have the H870, but because I live in South Africa I can't unlock. Hopefully Brian's method would work with my variant as well.

Also, none of our cellular networks use CDMA as far as I remember so it shouldn't be an issue.
Worst case scenario, the H870 and other non-US/Canada/Mexico models will need an unlockable H870 donor phone. Not a huge issue.

So it'll need a donor phone which hasn't been unlocked yet?

But if this is doable it'll be amazing. I just want AOSP and a sound mod like Viper and Ainur Sauron then I'll be happy. I'm not too happy with the phone's sound output. Hopefully I'll tweak everything the way I want when the bootloader gets unlocked.

No, just any donor H870 phone that has an unlock.bin. An unlockable one with the unlock.bin

That's great! So once he's done all he needs is to ask someone who unlocked their H870 to send them the unlock.bin file then I'll be able to root?
It's a little bit more complicated than that. Just hang back and wait for the release for the US models and we'll see what, if anything, is needed for the H870 and associated variants.

Hello Brian

Would this method work with the H870 as well?
Er.... H870 can already be boot loader unlocked /rooted /rom flashed (there is an official lineage for it that i'm running on the H870 I'm currently replying you with)

I just found a setting 'OEM unlock' on my LG H870DS! WHAT is going on?!
You're being sarcastic right?

It doesn't do anything the OEM or carrier doesn't want it to do. It doesn't unlock the bootloader -- unless the OEM or Carrier wants to let you unlock the bootloader.

That (mostly useless) button has been on every Android since 2015. Since Lollipop and maybe even KitKat. And you just now noticed it? ;)

There are a few OEMs that let you unlock the bootloader, like LG on some "open market" variants. But even with this button, you STILL need official bootloader unlock code from LG.

Sent via open market LG US998 V30/V30+
