Any suggestions? I searched the internet for a long time and couldn't find anything. Does towelroot work? If it does, would I be able to install TWRP after using it? The goal of rooting this device is for me to get custom recovery on the device.

Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit works on this phone.

Recovery is compiled with the kernel. There is not a separate recovery partition, so you must install a custom kernel to obtain a custom recovery.

After root, you could use Mobile Odin Pro from the play store, or Mobile Odin Lite to install a custom kernel or one of the fine custom firmware including kernel and recovery. Read the development forum to see what is available.

Edit: If you want to retain 4.1.2 stock system, install AJK v 4.9 NoSwap kernel. If you want to use a custom 4.1.2 Touchwiz based firmware, install either Cooked or SHOstock3. These are not so easy to find in the development forum now-a-days. If you want the latest AOSP-ish firmware, check out the active and recently active threads in the development forum.

Towelroot does not work on the GS2 sgh-i777, however a similar app called "framaroot" does work.
