This procedure works on 4.0.3 on Arc S, Neo V and Ray. It also works on Unlocked and Locked Bootloader.

Requirements:

1.install adb driver (or reinstall it from adb sdk)
2. needs USB Debugging on
(optional) activate Mass Storage Mode (MSC), some users reported trouble using MTP mode
3. connect the usb cable to the phone ->run .bat file from zip
4.press any key
5.the phone will turn off, wait to switch on again (see the lockscreen)
6.press any key again
7.the phone will reboot again(same as 6th step)
8.press any key ...again
9. same as 6th step
10.press any key, the bat closes...and there you are...working superuser, need to install busybox from market

i've found the root file on arc development section, i don't remember in wich one :)

also, CWM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346190 is compatible

Hit Thanks button if it works for you :)
Will this work on the ST15i? :)

This solved my problems:
1. uninstall the Companion software (it never installed the adb drivers automatically)
2. download + extract the adb drivers linked: developer.sonymobile.com/cws/devworld/downloads/download/sonyericssonxperiaproxperiarayxperiarayso-03cdrivers
3. right-click *adb.inf > Install
4. enable USB debugging
5. set to Mass Storage mode
6. connect cable
quick check: "adb devices" in dosbox should list something

@asertyo: THANKS!!

Note: when running the script, the third message is "wait for reboot" but there is no adb reboot? I just waited a minute, rebooted manually, and continued.

run_me.sh

Maybe the OP should also mention that the same trick also works in pure Linux environment. Just install adb (install google android SDK, then download plattform-tools with their software manager), and copy adb executable to somewhere in your $PATH (like /usr/local/bin). And run the commands listed in "run me.bat" (excluding echo and pause lines, of course, and replacing backslash with slash). Or use the attached script then (started in a terminal from the same position as run me.bat, like "bash -x run_me.sh.txt").

Installing Custom firmware

Once you have completed this process, rooted and installed CWM, is it possible to install custom firmware such as MIUI 4, or do you need a custom kernel and therefore the bootloader unlocked?

was that because your service menu says this?
(for official ICS) bootloader unlocked: Yes
(for GB) bootloader unlocked allowed: Yes

if no, better unlock it first by testpoint or official method
if yes, uh oh... i haven't encountered that one

if it's sim-locked, better unlock it

Is there software to Unroot Xperia Ray Stock ICS. I rooted it just to make the Ambient Light Sensor working, and I want to unroot it for warranty.
My Ray is still 2 months.
Thanks.

Does this this root method also work with official Sony ICS 4.0.4 Ray update?
