Hit Thanks button if it works for you![]()
I don't think this method works with 4.0.4. You need to flash the 4.0.3 kernal from the ftf file, root then re-flash 4.0.4 kernal. There's a thread here about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682224i did everything as described but nothing happens...im running official ICS 4.0.4 and i wat to root my phone jus to remove unwanted apps and stop unwanted apps to run n gain permissions....m new to android and want to sort this out n learn....thanks in advance for helping a n00b
On my phone it is system/xbin, and in that folder there is busybox, dexdump, sh and suWhat I do is delete su in system/bin. Then delete superuser.apk.
Sent from my Xperia Ray using xda premium
No you dont have to flash the whole rom, only kernel is needed.Figured out why it didn't work now. My phone is on 4.0.4
BTW, if I ever use flashtool to flash the entire rom, will I have to reroot the phone again or is the root permanent? Sorry for a newbie question.
I found this page http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0 helpful. Also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682224 also has all the needed instructions and files in one place.
Basically 4.0.4 is not directly rootable by DoomLord s technique, so we have to downgrade the kernel to 4.0.3 then root it and flash the 4.0.4 kernel back again.

Also found out a nice tutorial on how to create a backup of your original firmware.
1. you must have SUS
2. run SUS and repair your phone (you will lose all data)
3. go to C:\Program Files\Sony Ericcson\Update Service\db\13740270\blob_fs\
4. Copy the 2 largest files you'll find there and paste to a directory (say C:\dump)
5. Run FlashTool
6. Click Advanced > Decrypt Files
7. Source folder : C:\dump
8. From Files, select all (Click & Ctrl + A) and click -> to move the 2 files to "Files to convert"
9. Click OK
10. Wait patiently till it finishes...
11. From Folder list, select all (Click & Ctrl + A) and click -> to move the 2 files to Firmware content
12. If it is ICS, tick the Disable Final Verification Check
13. On Device write the model [ex. Xperia Ray (ST18i)], on Version write the firmware version and/or the Android version [ex. 4.1.B.0.431 (ICS_4.0.4)], on Branding write the region and your name if you wish.
14. Click OK
15. On Device Selection choose the device it is for (ex. ST18i)
16. Wait very patiently...
17. When it finishes the firmware .ftf file is located on C:\Flashtool\firmwares
You can choose to make only kernel .ftf file if you choose the kernel file in step 11
