This procedure works on 4.0.3 on Arc S, Neo V and Ray. It also works on Unlocked and Locked Bootloader.

Requirements:

1.install adb driver (or reinstall it from adb sdk)
2. needs USB Debugging on
(optional) activate Mass Storage Mode (MSC), some users reported trouble using MTP mode
3. connect the usb cable to the phone ->run .bat file from zip
4.press any key
5.the phone will turn off, wait to switch on again (see the lockscreen)
6.press any key again
7.the phone will reboot again(same as 6th step)
8.press any key ...again
9. same as 6th step
10.press any key, the bat closes...and there you are...working superuser, need to install busybox from market

i've found the root file on arc development section, i don't remember in wich one :)

also, CWM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346190 is compatible

Hit Thanks button if it works for you :)

I don't think this method works with 4.0.4. You need to flash the 4.0.3 kernal from the ftf file, root then re-flash 4.0.4 kernal. There's a thread here about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682224

Is someone working on rooting the latest official rom?

I just want to update my current rom (rooted official 2.3 rom) to Ice Cream Sandwich with the PC Companion tool from Sony...the latest official rom is 4.0.4, am I correct (I'm in Europe, don't known if that matters though). I want to root only for removing the crap bloatware, my current rom is also rooted and thats enough for me:D.

Will this work on my phone after updating to 4.0.4?: http://androidadvices.com/root-sony-xperia-ray-official-ics-404-firmware-tutorial/

Figured out why it didn't work now. My phone is on 4.0.4 :p

BTW, if I ever use flashtool to flash the entire rom, will I have to reroot the phone again or is the root permanent? Sorry for a newbie question.

I found this page http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0 helpful. Also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682224 also has all the needed instructions and files in one place.
Basically 4.0.4 is not directly rootable by DoomLord s technique, so we have to downgrade the kernel to 4.0.3 then root it and flash the 4.0.4 kernel back again.

No you dont have to flash the whole rom, only kernel is needed.

Also found out a nice tutorial on how to create a backup of your original firmware.

1. you must have SUS

2. run SUS and repair your phone (you will lose all data)

3. go to C:\Program Files\Sony Ericcson\Update Service\db\13740270\blob_fs\

4. Copy the 2 largest files you'll find there and paste to a directory (say C:\dump)

5. Run FlashTool

6. Click Advanced > Decrypt Files

7. Source folder : C:\dump

8. From Files, select all (Click & Ctrl + A) and click -> to move the 2 files to "Files to convert"

9. Click OK

10. Wait patiently till it finishes...

11. From Folder list, select all (Click & Ctrl + A) and click -> to move the 2 files to Firmware content

12. If it is ICS, tick the Disable Final Verification Check

13. On Device write the model [ex. Xperia Ray (ST18i)], on Version write the firmware version and/or the Android version [ex. 4.1.B.0.431 (ICS_4.0.4)], on Branding write the region and your name if you wish.

14. Click OK

15. On Device Selection choose the device it is for (ex. ST18i)

16. Wait very patiently...

17. When it finishes the firmware .ftf file is located on C:\Flashtool\firmwares

You can choose to make only kernel .ftf file if you choose the kernel file in step 11

I have exactly the same problem and exactly the same error output.

I'm pretty sure I did the downgrade to 4.0.3 correctly because PC Companion reports that version (instead of 4.0.4) USB Debug is on, mock locations on, unknown sources on and set to MSC. No idea what I'm doing wrong.
EDIT: I went so far as to fully downgrade to 4.0.3 (not just Kernal for 4.0.4 method) and I still get the same errors. But for some random reason I cannot explain the super-one click method worked for me. Maybe you too gnp.
