Hello everyone, first forum post here so I'll try to be as detailed as possible.
I tried to root my Mi A1m running Oreo 8.0, however I've encountered a problem. When in fastboot mode, the pc doesn't recognize my device. Actually, when in device manager the Android device is listed but if I type in the command prompt fastboot devices no devices are found. Because of this, doing fastboot oem unlock asks me to connect a device.
What's the problem here? USB debugging is active, OEM unlockin also. I have the ADB drivers installed and the Google USB drivers too.
What am I missing? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks everyone!
Just to be safe try reinstalling adb/fastboot/drivers
While device is on check using adb devices.(keep usb debugging on)

Edit:
If adb shows your device then you can try
adb reboot fastboot

When I use patched boot img I am stuck in boot animation - I am pretty sure it's because of incompatible Magisk modules from Nougat. But I don't know how to disable them - temporary booted TWRP 3.1.1 does not detect oreo partitions and I don't want to flash TWRP 3.2.1

Any workaround to disable magisk modules or get fresh magisk without modules?

Thank you!

Try to boot this file, it is supposed to have TWRP and Magisk in it https://dbr.ee/JvIz (found it somewhere on XDA, but there is so many Oreo threads already, that I'm not sure where exactly). Also you can install TWRP, remove Magisk modules and return to stock with files from here.

Here is a easier process if you really want to check if the boot.img is compatible:
First enable OEM Unlock in developer settings
    - Reboot to fastboot (volume down + power)
    - fastboot oem unlock (won't wipe)
    - fastboot boot patched_boot.img
    - After Android finishes booting, install Magisk Manager.
    - In Magisk Manager, use Install and install the latest Magisk with Direct Install
    - Reboot and you're done
