Cant unlock the bootloader for the XT1765 in order to get root, already talked to the guys at lenovo for that, is there a way to root this phone or is all hope lost?
Is it MetroPCS? If so, I think you should be able to. Did you try the tutorial in the 2nd post of this thread? Lenovo probably isn't going to be much help.

It's metropcs. lenovo forums wasn't that much of help, but they did help. They told me to search for the cid, which was 0x0016, but they stop there saying it wont work because its unknown cid for them, or something like that

Edit: Motorola's tool?

Again, did you try the tutorial that is in the 2nd post of this thread? I know there are at least a few other motorola devices on metropcs that have been unlocked this way.

if you're referring to the Motorola bootloader unlocking website, then yes.
If you copied and pasted the unlock code properly, making sure there were no spaces or other characters that shouldn't be there and scrolled below that point and checked the box agreeing to the terms and conditions of unlocking, then I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe someone else can help.

Thanks for the help, i didn't work, it says my device is not eligible for bootloader unlocking, so maybe i'll wait out a few months to see whats new to root this phone, again, thanks
I just went through the instructions in the second post and was able to get a code for an xt1765 (MetroPCS).

I'm getting a bad key error now, but everything still boots up and works fine. I'll mess with it later this week, though.

There's zip to flash in TWRP to disable forcrencrypt and dm-verity. Flash it and the bad key error will go away. Make sure to follow all the instructions.

Do you mean the instructions in the fourth post of this thread from "mer2017"? The TWRP from the first linked thread called, "twrp-3.1.0-0-cedric.img", right?

I plan on going through mer2017's post in the next few days. One quick question:

I thought that 'bad key' error was from the bootloader being unlocked, so i went through and did the locking commands, and now i'm not sure if the bootloader is locked or unlocked. I tried, 'fastboot oem device-info' but that doesn't appear to be a valid command on this phone (the device-info command wasn't listed in the help section, either). I tried running 'fastboot oem unlock' and 'fastboot oem unlock MYKEY' and also didn't see anything explicitly saying that the device was unlocked. I'm certain it was successfully unlocked the other night, and i'm pretty sure i locked it after first seeing the bad key error.

so, with all that in mind, is there a way to check the bootloader's locked/unlock status in adb? EDIT: as hitokage004 pointed out, 'fastboot getvar all' works for fastboot (meant fastboot and not adb above!).

Thanks!

Is there a place that the results are conglomerated for people? i.e. what provider and whether or not bootloader is unlockable?
It seems certain that Verizon is not.
I can say that on my E4, purchased via US cellular, I did manage to unlock using the process with Motorola.
@thenextdon13 - Been searching through the forums, I see that you have the US Cellular E4. I would like to confirm the following before I purchase a US Cellular E4:

1. You have successfully unlocked the bootloader?
2. You successfully rooted?

I believe the answer to both is yes, but as I mentioned, I just want to confirm so I don't waste my time/money if neither is true.

Thanks!

I've just bought MetroPCS/T-Mobile's XT1765 (as I dropped my Moto G (2015) off my car's roof onto the highway), and I successfully unlocked and rooted it just a couple days ago. I basically followed the steps outlined in this thread, but specifically, I followed here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e4/how-to/moto-e-guide-to-rooting-t3652982
I installed the twrp-perry-3.1.1-r1.img recovery, and I did have to flash the no-verity zip before supersu. I also found not to stack the install zips; don't line them up, but do the one at a time, going back to load the next one on its own, too. To root, I used the phh (magisk), as I found Chainfire's supersu didn't work for me in this case. I didn't know you have to run the phh superuser manager app within Android to use root, so I wiped and tried it a few different times before I figured that out :D .

All good so far :)

The answer is yes to both.
Unlocked bootloader using instructions on Motorola's website
Rooted using https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e4/how-to/moto-e-guide-to-rooting-t3652982 (phh's su.zip).

Note, root-verifier did not indicate root worked- but using a terminal program and running 'su' did...

Will Magisk Systemless Root and XPosed Framework with Gravity Box for Nougat (7.1.1) work on this device.. If it does, does anyone have the steps for this device, and where to find good links

It all works, which device do you have? If you have the Qualcomm variant (if the phone is from US) unlock the bootloader same way you unlock all other Moto bootloaders, boot or flash the twrp in the development section and flash magisk.

I haven't seen a systemless root for this phone yet. The tutorial I followed (above) called for the system to be set as R/W to root.
