It seems that it had been, until now, impossible to root the Verizon version of the S4 Mini. (SCH-I435) No root method worked because of patched vulnerabilities and the bootloader has yet to be unlocked. I decided to give the Kingoroot apk another try not expecting much... but low and behold it worked!!! I was shocked, and I tested it, it is in fact rooted! I'm very happy about this and figured I needed to share this with other Verizon S4 Mini users! I'm hoping this can be a stepping stone for someone to figure out unlocking the bootloader, though that is above my abilities.

EDIT: I restarted it after installing GSAM Root Companion and it said custom and showed an unlocked padlock. I don't know if this means it's unlocked or not? I thought so at first, but someone else told me that just means it's rooted.

It's just a way to keep you from rooting then sending it in to the manufacturer for warranty repairs ect. Kingroot didn't work? Also like hammerhead said triangle away works great to take away the "custom" unlock symbol at boot. Also some shops and buyers won't want it after that symbol starts to pop up. Triangle away is not permanent it has to rewash every time it's flagged.

SCH-I435 here, (s4 mini), and I just confirmed that Kingroot worked as well, with rootchecker. (towel/saferoot exploits were patched, so options are limited for this phone). kernel version 3.4.0, March 5, 2015, build kot49h.i435.vruboc1

I like the "custom unlock" icon at boot :) This is a $99 refurb phone, who cares about warranty?

I'm working on replacing kingroot with supersu at the moment. It probably has 87% less Chinese spyware imho.

out of the pan into the ... ....

I can't trust anything Chinese that has that sort of access to my phone, they will have to do what the CCP say unfortunately, just like the Chinese courts with their 99% conviction rate.

Edit: though you might be right at 87% less :p

Yeah, it ain't fun. Done it a few times sense. I've since gotten myself an SCH-i435L board though, which is for the Verizon LTE in Rural America program, and doesn't have a locked bootloader thank god. (I think an SCH-R980, U.S. Cellular's version, works too.) However just getting root was a big deal.
