Thanks for the guide, seems to have worked fine. Have TWRP, Root, Magisk on my Tab A T385 after following all the guides on this forum.

I updated my firmware to latest stock
Turned on Developer mode, and OEM unlock
Then installed TWRP
Then installed Magisk via TWRP and the Magisk APK
Patched boot.img as per this guide
Have root!

Success!, thanks for this.
I just followed the instructions.
Used updato to get firmware, unpacked boot.img from that.
Installed Magisk mgr, downloaded zip, patched boot.
Copied to PC, ODIN flashed patched img in AP field. ODIN was happy, tablet was happy, rebooted, told me everything will be cleansed.
Finished cleansing, booted into normal first android setup steps

I did not have any issues with OEM unlock and don't know where the mysterious 7 days came from. Mine was ready to go out of box.
Now if there were only some ROMs without TW to put on.
Are all Galaxy Tab A ROMs interchangeable?

Custom Rom

Method was kindly shown to me by user Mefody in answer to a thread I posted.

Rooting SM-T380/T385 via Magisk Manager APK v.5.5.3 & Magisk 15.2:

1. Unpack stock firmvare ***.tar.md5 that is currently installed on your tablet (they MUST BE the same!!!).
2. Then unpack AP-block from step 1 to obtain "boot.img" file.
3. Download & install on tablet Magisk Manager APK.
4. Put "boot.img" on SDCARD.
5. Run Magisk Manager, in setiings set "Patch kernel", then setup the Magisk zip (Wi-Fi must be connected to Internet ).
6. When asked, point Magisk Manager to place on SDCARD where "boot.img" saved.
7. After some time You will get "OK".
8. Find on SDCARD file "patched_boot.img". Copy in on PC & rename to "boot.img". Then archive it to "<any name>.tar".
9. Set tablet to download mode & flash above tar-file via AP-slot of Odin-programm.
10. Tablet will reboot & ask to wipe all data to factory's params. Do it... Be noticed, that all passwords, setting, google registry will be wiped.
11. After wiping & rebooting install Magisk Manager APK again... And YEAH!!! You got root!

Do phone calls/messaging still work after rooting? I can't seem to get it to work after installing a SIM card. 4g data works fine, but not phone functions. But I never tried with stock firmware, so unsure if this is related to rooting or not.

Good it flashes I've done it by downgrading the firmware but how long do you usually to boot back up because I'm not sure whether it worked?

---------- Post added at 10:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:14 PM ----------

Does OEM unlock have to be enabled for the device to boot back up after flashing the "patched_boot.tar?

---------- Post added at 10:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:18 PM ----------

My device took the patched_boot.tar but then it seem to be taking awhile to boot backup

---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:20 PM ----------

My OEM unlock is completely missing so I was curious to see if I could gain root without it

I've followed this guide twice before and both times it left my tablet virtually useless. I've followed it completely and am unsure why it's not working correctly. Any ideas?

I kind of stuck too - ODIN displays "fail" after trying to flash the patched boot.img, while the tablet displays "Only official released binaries are allowed to be flashed" in the download mode. I'd appreciate any hint:)

Thanks, where can I find the stock firmwares?

You can forget to find anything. I have taken 30 minutes to read this whole thread. It is named rooting tutorial but nobody is taking its time to explain how the rooting works. Its discussing how to switch roms and whatever else. You know if you have nothing else in life and you are still a virgin then you go off bragging how much else you know in a thread where you pretend to try to help a noob.

It's embarrassing. Kids, the official TWRP app does NOT have the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8 2017 model ROM. Its the tablet you can currently buy in Best Buy Costco WALMART and they don't bother putting up a ROM for it. Like who are these people?

Also NONE of the rooting apps work on the stock device. You have to tell this to the people. If yall use your ridiculous lit up gaming PCs loaded with geek squad apps taken from the deep web, then don't come here and post something as if it would be so easy. NONE of the apps work. Samsung got smarter its ridiculous you CANT root the device from itself you need a PC.

Period..... good night throw it away you won't get it to root here....

UPDATE ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga.../twrp-3-2-1-1-tab-sm-t380-10-02-2018-t3747564) root thread....
I always check XDA for a root thread on any device before purchase. Found your reply here & noticed the vague references, posts either one way or the other.... ROOT WORKED!!! Or "No root at all"!
This would be the 3rd or 4th "FAKE ROOT THREAD" I have come across in the last year or so....
How do these stay up? I take it, this is not a root capable device? Posting in here for all to see... help me clarify this if you would.

Once you have been on XDA long enough you will start to recognize "respectable developer" names....
Dees_Troy for one...
That above link will walk you through TWRP & root of the Samsung Galaxy TAB A 8" T380/T385....

2018-12-16: Just wanted to confirm that I've got it working with the latest update on Oreo. I downloaded the latest stock ROM from updato. This was really handy when recovering from a failed TWRP installation. It is also needed, as noted in the instructions, as the base for patching the boot.img.
I want to thank you for this fantastic method! Now I'm looking how to force adopted storage and turn this pos into a decent tablet.

This was also the first time I've used Heimdall on Linux to flash all the images. I have to say I find it much more intuitive than Odin.
Cheers

Rooting this on 8.1 breaks mirroring. This is to a Samsung tv, roku ultra and tcl roku tv.
Yet, I can mirror the tv to the tablet. Have flash, wiped, rooted a few times to test. Same result. :)

Pretty sure rolling back is not allowed.

Thanks for creating this thread. I used the original thread to root my tab, so seeing this as its own thing will be helpful to a lot of people.

Now all we need is TWRP and we'll have Xposed and custom rom support:cool::cool:

Could you clarify on these two steps?

    1. Unpack stock firmvare ***.tar.md5 that is currently installed on your tablet (they MUST BE the same!!!).
    2. Then unpack AP-block from step 1 to obtain "boot.img" file.

You have to open the stock firmware with an archive manager like WinRar or 7zip. Inside you should find an AP-Block folder. Inside of that should be your boot.img file
