I'm not able to type anything. I'm lost. Are you talking about pushing it through adb or the fire utility?

Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

windows command prompt.

Start->Run->cmd

cd to kfu/tools directory and issue fastboot devices to see if it comes up there

If it does, then place the recovery.img file into that kfu/tools folder and type

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

I have rooted and flashed multiple Android devices over the last three years, including a Gen 1 Kindle Fire about a year ago.

HTC Nexus 1
HTC Thunderbolt
Kindle Fire
Archos A70
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Two HP Touchpads

So that's seven. Plus this new KF.

I should have just pushed everything manually through ADB, I guess. I ran this version of KFU, and it only partially installed TWRP. On reboot, it locked at the kindle fire graphic. Windows 7 with ADB and SDK reports Unknown Device on USB. Can't manually reinstall drivers and get it recognized. ADB and Fastboot status is offline.

Maybe I did something foolish. Dunno. I popped it open and tried shorting the pin. But, without a factory cable, i guess I am unable to push the boot image via USB.

Not expecting support, just thought I would give a data point. I tried to make a shortcut and bricked a new KF. I did try the unbrick utilities and ADB strings that others have suggested, BTW. With ADB offline, no comms.

Well what you did was you tried to use KFU for a New Kindle 2 which will brick the device. This tool does not work for KF2 and in fact will brick the device.

so...yeah.

By the way, there is a different forum for the Kindle Fire HD, KF2, etc. This forum is only for the original Kindle Fire.

Nice assumption. >:-/

What I am referring to above is an original Gen 1 7" Kindle Fire.

I am aware that you can't root the KF2 and HD using the original methods. Which is why I got an original Gen 1.

OK. Well you said New. So I figured since you can't buy them new from Amazon you meant KF2. My bad.

Sorry. Semantics. New to me. Refurbished secondary market. I bought it specifically so I could CM 10.1 it. I may be an abrasive 'tard, but I sometimes do my research.

OK. It's all good. If you are stuck on the screen that says KindleFire, you are likely stuck in fastboot. Go to your command window and check by typing fastboot devices (make sure you are in the directory where your fastboot.exe file is, or have that directory in your PATH variable). It is located in the tools directory in the KFU you downloaded and unzipped. If that returns a device ID, you are in business. Just get the TWRP recovery.img file and push it via fastboot:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

That should do it and allow you to get into TWRP and finish up by installing a ROM.

Just as a data point, you could check in device manager and make sure it's recognized - if not check the PID and VID it's reporting, and try adding those to android_winusb.inf. I've had good luck with that technique on other devices.

Updating to twrp 2.4 (w/o PC, & w/o flashable zip)

1. Download it here:
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/blaze/openrecovery-twrp-2.4.0.0-blaze.img

2. Rename it to recovery.img & move it to sdcard/

3. In terminal, Type this:

su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

4. Enjoy! That's it!
Fantastic! I spent about half an hour messing with my Kindle trying to figure out why ADB wasn't responsive... And this took all of 30 seconds and my TWRP is updated.

I made a new files.log file and stuck it in my Dropbox since it doesn't look like Vashypooh has gotten a chance to update the one on random.kennocha.com server. Before you run the run.bat file, edit it with this new link.

Change:

To:

That will cause the KFU to grab openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-blaze.img (currently) instead of the older TWRP.

Not sure why I can't get this to work but I have tried several suggestions on this thread. Whenever I launch the utility, whatever option I select it seems to start to download something, then says fail opening shift: No such file or directory. The kindle has been told to reboot in Fastboot Mode.

Then it says Fastboot uses a different device ADB You should check device manager for Kindle or Amazon and rerun the driver installer. Then it reboots my kindle.

I am assuming it means there is an issue with the driver but I cannot figure it out. I have uninstalled the driver several times, re ran the driver installer, tried a few other things mentioned in the thread and it still comes to the same problem.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

3.6.1 rooting difficulties

Hey there, just thought I would drop some feedback on this kit and my experience trying to root my friend's recently-purchased used Kindle Fire with what appeared to be the latest firmware/updates and a factory reset the day he purchased it.

Downloaded 0.9.6, installed on my PC, no ADB
Installed on my laptop, no ADB connectivity
Decided what they hey, installed on a laptop with no history of rooting and that had been set up about 2 weeks prior - no ADB

Uninstalled, installed 0.9.5's install_first or driver install batch file (not in front of that computer at the moment) - ADB shows

0.9.5 installs some software, but did not install vending, superuser, etc. Also I couldn't get to recovery.

Run 0.9.6 now with the drivers/setup from 0.9.5 and it installs a different bootloader that allows me to get into recovery (which I don't go to at this point)

Running the install root fails, I see permission denied in the batch file.
Execute ADB manually to push vending, it fails, superuser isn't installed / system is not R/W - try mounting that via the batch file, nada.
Reboot into recovery, push the superuser binary and flash it. Mount system and push vending to it, push superuser.apk there also just in case. Change permissions and it works.

Far as I know this Kindle was stock and latest OTA as my friend bought it and wiped and updated it.

Anyhow, he's rooted and happy now, but the steps in the batch file seemed to be foiled by something, and the Kindle drivers in the latest seemed to hate it - not sure what is up with that.

If you need any information on what he had, will get it to you. Looks like his just might require another step in the batch file as I managed to figure it out fast enough.

Computers were all Windows 7. Two were 64-bit, don't know the third's bit number.

i cant get into fastboot for some reason , I can run normol boot mode 4000 , but when I try to get int fastboot 4002 , it just sticks on the kindle fire screen doing nothing , ive tried 0.9.6. and 0.9.5 , changed out the drivers a slew of time , it says kindle fire in in device manager / android composite , i also change out the ini files a few time , I tried the kf first aid , that wont work , Any suggestions would be fine , I have searched through a billion threads and have tried many even getting stuck in fastboot for awhile , I may just need a factory cable (I ordered one) , I cant believe this is causing so many problems , the only good thing is I re-learning adb and alot of stuf in here , you guys are awesome I just wish I could figure this out , I dont suppose trying 3 recovery would do anything , if I cant get fastboot? *nope that just sends me back to normol boot mode*

*Ok I tried running root and got it , installed fff , I cant get recovery though for some reason , when the fire turns blue booting up , press and hold the boot menu comes up , press til recovery comes up , but it doesnt do anything , just does a loop , then boots normal , I tried to install twrp twice ,no dice , (side note , I do have go launcher and the android desktop now) , I guess I can try CWM INSTEAD?

WITH THE BLUE KINDLE SCREEN IT SAYS V1.4A TOP RIGHT

Installing twrp ..........

<waiting for device> thats it , cant load fastboot , not sure what this is since I got root and fff?

WARNING: DO NOT use this on 2nd Generation Devices or you risk bricking your Device.

These procedures are for FIRST GENERATION Devices ONLY. In otherwords, for the ORIGINAL KF. If you proceed to use this on your 2nd Generation Device, and you BRICK it, don't complain. You have been warned.

This thread is also no longer maintained. A new Thread has been opened.

    The new Thread

    MD Moderator XDA

Hi all, some of you may have seen my utility over in the de-bricking thread. My goal at this point is to try and make lives easier for everyone I can.

So what I have done is created a script that can be used to handle a lot of common things people may want, and I will continue to add things people request that I think would be easy, and beneficial. I just wanted to make this situation easier for the average person.

You will see how the tool detects you at the default screen, and can refresh it by hitting 0 at any menu to have it refresh ADB/Fastboot and see what mode the kindle is in.

    Currently the tool does:

    • Automatic elevation to root for tool operations.
    • Full root install.
    • Auto detect current bootmode.
    • Auto Detect ADB/Fastboot Online/Offline.
    • Auto download update.zip from Amazon.
    • Auto download and install TWRP Recovery.
    • Auto download and install CWM Recovery.
    • Auto download and install FFF Bootloader.
    • Manage current bootmodes.
    • Manage Read/Write.
    • Install GoogleApps/Market/GoLauncherEX.
    • Lock/Unlock the Wallpaper from being changed.

Currently the tool comes packaged with the drivers required to operate ADB and Fastboot.

Please note: If your device can't be seen in fastboot mode, please make sure to install the drivers packaged with this, as it will show up afterwards. You can use the install_drivers.bat with the device plugged in for this.

Usage should be straight forward for the tool. If you are having issues with something, this tool has a good chance of getting you back on track. This issue was found and fixed using this post: Click me Over at Rootzwiki.

I make no claim that this tool is perfect, but I certainly will do my best to support it as long as people like it.

Here are some screen-shots of it:

    Known Tricks

    • If you end up stuck at the yellow triangle, in KF Utility select Boot Normal, wait for it to say <waiting for device> and then press and hold the power button 20 seconds until the fire turns off, then when its off turn it back on. This sometimes happens, I have yet to find a clean solution :(
    • If you end up stuck with a yellow triangle, do not EVER unplug it. Leave it plugged in. Check the windows drivers to make sure it isnt showing as "kindle" again. Fastboot is different and can cause this.

I tries that in my device manager it says unknow device with yellow mark when i go to update driver it says the latest is already installed

Alright. Let me guide you through this...
-Download the attachment I provide below and place it in somewhere you KNOW where you can find it easily. (I placed it in C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google\usb_driver(I would recommend doing the same))
    -Go to device manager
-right click on the exclamation mark kindle.
    -Choose update driver software
-choose browse my computer for driver software
-choose let me pick from a list of devices on my computer
    -Then select have disk
    -Then select browse
-direct to where you downloaded the usb driver i attached
    -Select okay and okay

    New version of KFU

I PM'd VashyPooh and he is no longer supporting KFU because he doesn't own a Kindle Fire anymore. So now I will be maintaining this project for now. I am going to make a new thread and release Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.7+. Here is the new thread :) I don't know what should be done with this thread though once it becomes obsolete.

VashyPooh, thank you for what you've done here you've helped me and thousands of people root, install custom firmware, and de-brick our devices. We really appreciate what you've done for us and all the hard work you've put in to this. :good:

Also, thank you for letting me update this because now your utility will be able to help even more people. :)
