well there really is no reason to root your xoom when you can just flash a rooted stock rom

flash twrp (download the img file)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1782235

then flash a stock rooted rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798892 (wifi only)

or if you dont care about staying stock, then flash any of the many JB roms out there, by EOS, CodenameAndroid, etc

Thanks, what if I want to go back to ICS?

When I plug my USB into my PC, it shows as a Motorola USB network adapter. Can't transfer anything to or from it. I've tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it but it keeps showing as a Motorola USB network adapter. Please help.

I have the Verizon black on black and found the zip file but can not find the recovery.img file to root my Xoom. Could someone please indicate where I can find it or post it.

My unit is currently stock and I want to root it prior to adding anything to it.

Hey guys...

Trying to root the MZ602 Verizon 4.1.2 OTA..

Ran through all the steps, flashed superuser, however i do *NOT* have root access. I have access to recovery and have tried multiple times. Flashing the zip simply states *DONE* and says it works.

When I boot, use root checker or anything else; nothing has root permissions. Super User is installed but plays stupid.

Any assist would be greatly appreciated.

Read the recovery log to see what happened.
In twrp repeat the process of flashing the zip the send log to sdcard, reboot into android and on the root of the sdcard will be a recovery_log.txt see what happened

I don't see a recovery log after booting back into the OS, I am using ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.0

When I run the root this is what is shown:

-- Installing: /sdcard/Xoom-Universal-Root.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...

-----------------------------------------
Xoom Universal rooting tool
-----------------------------------------

Extracting AnyKernel Resources...
Reading System Ramdisk...
Flashing new boot.img...
Installing su & superuser.apk
Done! :D

Install from sdcard complete.

Well first update your recovery and you wouldn't need to worry about this. Both twrp and cwm have a detector for root, if root is not present after flash a ROM it will prompt you to install su bin and apk. Grab the latest twrp from my sig

Just updated recovery to the one in your signature, attempted root again. Rebooted.

Root checker states no root access. I don't see a log on the SD card either. The superuser apk IS installed. Just no root access.

One thing different when flashing on this recovery though is after the Done! :D

it states "Updating partition details...."

Then simply states successful afterwards.

I appreciate your assistance. Again this is stock 4.1.2; not a custom rom, I like the stock experience >_<

It looks like you have 0 space left on the /system (> 1mb)
This is what I was thinking but wanted a log before telling u.
Using the file manager in twrp your going to need to make some room in /system do this
Boot to twrp mount the system go to advance tab
In command prompt type
"df"
This will tell you how much room if avaible at each mount look for /system
Then go to tge file manager and delete a few un needed apps from the /system because your on a stock rom you probably have some apps in the /system that are avaible from the playstore like gmail maps cordy and maybe a few others.
Now return to the command prompt and type df again.
The su and superuser app together is I think 6mb or so ensure u have enough room then flash again and that "should" fix it.

Did as you said; now shows 19276KB available on /system; root is not completing, will give a log in a moment.

    Universal Xoom Root

Thats right, this method will work for any xoom on any update - Including future updates!!!

Note: Unlike the similar method floating around on here, this also gives you an unsecured boot image.

-- Please Note: this thread is still a work in process and has been sped up by the arrival of the 4g Xooms --

Current requirements: adb & fastboot have been setup and you have an external sdcard for your xoom.

    1. Setting up adb & fastboot
Coming Soon! (If you want to write this section for me and pm me it, thats fine !)

    2. Downloading the rooting-update zip file.
Download the zip file from here.
Now place this on your external sdcard. - Sorry this is a requirement at the moment, like I said this is a bit rushed.
    3. Flashing recovery
    1. Download this Recovery image.
    2. If your device is locked, now is a good time to unlock it.
    Code:
    adb reboot bootloader
    fastboot oem unlock
    fastboot reboot

    3. Flash recovery
    Code:
    adb reboot bootloader
    fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img
Once you have verification on your device that this has been flashed, reboot your device by holding volume up + power.
Then 3 seconds after you see the Motorola logo, hit volume down. You should now see "Android Recovery" in the top left corner. Hit volume up to boot into recovery.

    4. Flashing the Xoom-Universal-Root.zip file.
If you're in clockwork mod recovery you can continue (This recovery image will say it is clockwork mod) . If you're not looking at clockwork mod, then you need to repeat step 3 again.

In cwm, go into "install zip from sdcard" -> "Choose zip from sdcard", then select the Xoom-Universal-Root.zip file you downloaded.
Note: use the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select

Reboot your device and then welcome to your rooted device!

thanks for this working on my Dad's MZ600

btw I uploaded the Universal Root it seems all links here are broken :)

This was also tested on a 4G Xoom and is working 100%.
    8
I've updated the zip file with a ICS compatible su binary.
I haven't tested personally but it should work.
