Is there no way to change hostfile on Android 11?
Twrp doesn't work and systemless hosts don't work

For a week I've had systemless hosts disabled and no issues.
I re enabled it last night and rebooted and instant freezes.
Though I had adaway already installed.
I uninstalled adaway and rebooted with SH still enabled and it seems fine so far. So maybe it's actually things like adaway interfering with the hosts file causing it, not list having SH enabled?

I don't understand this BS. I'm running systemless hosts on Pixel 5 and have no issues. Something not right with 3XL.
John Wusky ain't doing Jack about it

I commented this on the P5 thread about rooting just before I found this thread. But I think it might have happened to me on my P5 as well. It was on the charger and when I went to use it, it was unresponsive just like all of the threads on here have said. I'm going to see if it ever happens again after removing systemless hosts.

For those continuing to struggle with freezing problems and Adaway give Adguard a try. Adaway used to be my main reason for rooting until my Verizon Z2 Force made me explore other options. Works great on non rooted devices and even better on rooted devices. Adguard's log file is pretty amazing to watch in real time all inbound and outbound communication going on behind the scenes and gives you the ability to block what you want. Comes with many filter package options to enable including the same ones Adaway uses. Of course it uses the VPN method to get around the host file so no need to worry about systemless host issues.

Did anyone get this resolved? I still have freezes.... Usually involving charging it phone apk. I have reset phone, clean install to no avail. I still have magisk canary installed but do not have systemless installed. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas. I may uninstall magisk and restore stock boot.img over the weekend to see if magisk is the culprit. Thanks

Have you tried the Kirisakura "test" Kernel? I've only had 1 freeze since flashing it 2 weeks ago and I have Magisk Canary, systemless hosts enabled with Adaway 5.
It's located here: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=10763459528675568245
BTW, many of us were getting the "freeze" with the stock boot image.

I was also having freezing issues so I did a full factory reset on my phone, installing November factory image. Installed debug manager (with canary, making sure canary was checked in updates) and patched the boot.img - first time it patched the file was small, had to do it again, and then flashed the patched image, only enabling magiskhide, not systemless.
So far so good. I am using NextDNS to block all ads (DNS Blocking Service), although Adguard is really an incredible piece of software. Just don't like the idea of using an app in the background to kill ads, so that's why I use Android's Private DNS w/NextDNS for adware/privacy/ads/tracking protection. No need for apps running in background. (Although Adguard on root proxy filter mode does run well, still uses 200mb of memory).,

Currently experiencing the same thing, and I'm kind of losing my mind over it. I also use Nova, but I don't have any Magisk modules installed, just Magisk itself for root. But I have noticed charging seems to be what kicks of the issues.

At this point I'm considering just going back to full stock with no root to see if that fixes it. It seems to be taking more and more restarts to get it back to working now as well.

I had the same issue with stock kernel so I tried the "test" Kirisakura kernel ver. 2.1.5 from @Freak07 and all is good now. He explains why it may be happening in this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=83681085&postcount=2824
I also use Nova and Magisk but I use the Systemless Hosts & Active Edge modules and have no problems.

I'm on ElementalX for my kernal, so it doesn't appear to just be a stock kernel problem unfortunately.
Point is, stock kernel has commits that @Freak07 reverted. Not sure what @flar2 did to tweak the stock kernel, but if he didn't revert the commits that @Freak07 identified, you'll end up having the same problems. Try the Kirisakura test kernel and let us know if it helps.

I've also stopped having freezing issues after disabling SH in magisk. For those who are used to AdAway or just don't want to try another option, the latest release installed from F-Droid (5.1.0 as of today) offers VPN mode which is working fine for me without SH. After disabling SH, I uninstalled AdAway and revoked root privaleges in magisk manager, reinstalled AdAway and selected VPN mode on startup. No issues so far.

Fwiw, like a previous post, I did the following. Did a clean install Dec image. Ran for a couple of days, stock...no freezes. Got the latest platform tools- previous version failed. Patched boot image with magisk canary. Ran for a day, no systemless, no freezes. Installed krisakura kernel and Enabled systemless and installed adaway 4.3.3. so far, 2 days, no freezes and gpay works as well.
