Rumour: No Android L for Xperia Z

My experience differs. I have none of the lag or other problems reported by others around here, neither in 4.4.2 or 4.4.4. I mean, let's be honest here, none of the software they've provided for the Z is anywhere close to what would be classed as unusable, even the first 4.2.2 rom they provided that was indeed laggy yet still functional.

My expectations may be lower than others though, as I had an LG Optimus 2X before my Z and the stock rom on that was the very definition of "P.O.S"! :D

This is in fact the only Android device I've owned where I've stayed with the stock rom for this long.

Anyway, show me an Android device, and I'll find you a forum where people are complaining about the manufacturer for one reason or another! It's the nature of advanced users that frequent Internet forums to never be happy with their electronic stuff! :D

I completely agree with you on the experience, battery drain aside this is the one of the best stock roms I've used in a long while and rooting only made it alot better. :good:

OT: I kinda expected 4.4.4 would be EoL for the Z but if ever Sony changed their minds and it gets L that would keep it alive for much longer.

That's sad. I was hoping for L release for Z because my bootloader cannot be unlocked and the s*it carrier I got it from doesn't want to unlock it. Never will I ever buy anything from carrier. They just f*ck people up with these limitations.

Yeah, I said earlier that they release flagships too fast. Every 6 months is too soon and each new one isn't really a huge upgrade from the last.

Anyway, I'm looking at keeping the Z for another 6 months then will look at what's around. Z4/Z4C maybe, or Nexus if there's a new one released.

Sony seem to only release a compact edition every other refresh, i.e, Z1C, Z3C, so i would expect the next compact to be Z5C.
then again, this is assuming Sony plan on being consistent.
As far as i can tell, Sony don't have a damn clue what they are doing release-wise.
other than a large flagship every 6 months, every other release is a completely random surprise.

saying that, its likely my next phone will be a sony (renew next april). what the hell kind of phones Sony releases next spring, well, you may as well consult the tea leaves at the bottom of your mug!

I'm really happy with the .283 update but i wouldn't mind if weget a bugfix for the lockscreen issue for example. All i hope is just a little polishing of a good update.

There is some hope. Sony recruited Alin Jerpelea from the FreeXperia team, and now Sony are considering opening up their AOSP program to create officially supported AOSP ROM's for their flagships. If say, the Z3 became the first flagship to get this, it doesn't seem too far a leap of the imagination to get it ported to the venerable old Z. A "proper" Android L version on the Xperia Z is not a lost cause. HOWEVER, he specifically mentions not to ask him when Android L will arrive.

@Ambroos Could you give any light for us?
On the Android Police post about the 4.4.4 update for the Z line, you mentioned another major update for the older Z series. I'm curious if either is wrong, or info has changed since then.

Major update or not
XZ will be live with custom roms :good:
well it's a succesful flagship model, you gotta expect good custom roms.

it's a bit embarassing for sony to not release L for the Z, it came out the same year as S4, One etc. and they all will be getting it.

their "lets release a new flagship every 6 months" policy is really bad, technology doesnt even advance enough for a new model...

Guys, why all of you are bonding together the life of the device with the updates released for it?

This is a great phone, it is still fast, latest update is great (the best so far, for me) with no major bugs or anything, all Android apps work on it and they will still work for many years, hell, they still work on devices with Android 2.3. This is not iOS where once a new version of it has been released, new apps tend to require it.

Some of you, guys look like you enjoy switching firmwares more than actually using your smartphone for what it was meant to.

Not that surprising really :/ Sony has a history of dropping software updates pretty early. Heck, I reckon even the M7 and GS4 and maybe even the G2 will get Android L and they were released around the same time as the Xperia Z.

Quite disappointing actually because the 4.4.4 update makes the phone run super slow when comparing to the 4.3 firmware, sorta expected better from a once 700 dollar flagship device.

In response to those saying "why do you even care about software updates?" Well, software updates purpose is to optimize and improve the software to make the device run better. The android L reveal showed many changes and optimizations that could potentially make out Z feel like a totally new device, and honestly, yes, it is past it's mandatory 18 months of support, but Samsung and HTC at least have gone that extra step further, which still puts Sony at the back of the pack for software updates. Even the top SGS3 variants have 4.4 kitkat and it is a 2012 device, whereas Sony will not allow the 2013 Xperia SP past 4.3

I agree with u on this.. Even when XZ competitors like S4, One M7, LG G2 are getting it, i think Sony deserves to stay in the competition. Although still no expectations..
