You're on R1A and it doesn't work, I have R5, so it's probably not the firmware version and how we got it (which I was a bit worried about)
How did you root your device? AiO, or the other root trick?
I rooted with the BinAry script

I wonder if anything I froze with Titanium Backup may have interfered?
Last week, I reported serious issues when upgrading from R5 to R5A (missing lockscreen, non-functional home button, problems with apps).
I did try wiping and flashing again with Condi's tool, no change.
My R5 was rooted with Bin4ry's script, too. I don't use Titanium backup, so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
I did have problems with TB on phones when switching ROMs, though. Now I avoid it altogether.
Maybe the problems were caused by missing stock apps? I had removed all the Sony crap when I was on R5.
But now I think I finally solved it:
1. I let the OTA updater download the official R5A (it's saved on the /cache partition), but I DID NOT flash it when the download completed
2. meanwhile, I downloaded R1A firmware on a PC, then transferred it to the tablet
3. I renamed R1A fw to match R5A and overwrote the original file downloaded on /cache by the OTA updater
4. flashed it using the OTA updater (it looks like it didn't detect the fact that I changed the file)
5. after flashing, you get an error message ("failed to update software", or something like that) but other than that everything was fine, I was back on R1A. I also performed a wipe after flashing (from the Settings menu, not recovery)
6. rooted with AIO, installed backdoor and enabled write permissions to SD card
7. flashed R5A using Condi's tool (v 2.2), skipped the recovery image flashing, I'm already on rev .36
8. another wipe after flashing from the Settings menu
Now everything looks fine: I have all the apps (or, at least, I think I do) and they work as expected. In Settings - About tablet, the version is listed now as 4.0.3 release 5a (it used to say release 5 before).
Sooo... if you guys don't mind going through the pain of reinstalling all downloaded apps by hand, you might as well try the above.
Hope this helps!
