First functionality should work just good - so we should be safe.
To check it - on device with custom prerooted ICS boot into recovery,
then try to use '_hack_recovery.zip' - it should work just fine, like before.
I dont remember in details, but I checked this 'vulnerability' just after I've flashed first custom ICS.
'_hack_recovery.zip'
doesn't work, giving me sku base version error.

---------- Post added at 04:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:20 PM ----------

For second functionality - get notifications, ota - check build.prop for another values,
which of them decides about the incoming ota, I've changed all which are related to current version like:
ro.build.id=TISU0077
ro.build.display.id=TISU0077
ro.build.version.incremental (not ro.sony.build.incr..),
ro.build.version.release=4.0.3

Just try step by step, one by one lowering value, reboot,
and check if ota notification will appear.
Maybe only additional ro.build.version.incremental value
needs to be changed.
I changed every single one above, and even some more and still... "system up to date".

I also tried to use option:
Disable recovery update.zip signature-check [temporarly till reboot].

And this Is what I got:

[*]************************************************** ***************[*]
[*] Sony Tablet S / Disable recovery update.zip signature-check [*]
[*]************************************************** ***************[*]
[*] by Konrad Plaszczykowski (@condi) [email protected] [*]
[*] 'buy me a beer' - paypal: [email protected] [*]
[*]************************************************** ***************[*]
[*] How to? [*]
[*]************************************************** ***************[*]
[*] * If needed - it modifies region value to be correct for update [*]
[*] * Then you put your device in RECOVERY MODE [*]
[*] (= power off, hold vol-up, push power). [*]
[*] * Use '_hack_recovery.zip' - it will fail - that is ok [*]
[*] * Tool will finish - now you can flash your custom zip! [*]
[*] * [if changed] Revert back region. [*]
[*]************************************************** ***************[*]
Instructions:
1. Put your device in USB debugging mode. ROOT IS REQUIRED.
2. Attach it via USB in normal boot.
3. Run this script.

[*] Run device in normal boot.
[*] Press enter to begin...

[*] Waiting for device...
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *

W tym momencie 111104048 było nieoczekiwane.

Looking into AIO code sth wrong in here:

files\adb shell "su -c 'grep -e ro.sony.build.incremental /system/build.prop | tr -dc '[0-9]''" > files\new
set /p checkincc= < files\new
if not %checkincc% LEQ 111104048 (color 4f && echo [*] build.incremental value is too high, && echo reapply 'rescue-backdoor' && echo [*] Press any key to exit. && del files\new > NUL 2>&1 && pause > NUL && color 1f && GOTO:EOF)
del files\new > NUL 2>&1

Archive is either in unkown format or damaged

Hi there.

I've downloaded signed-nbx03_001-ota-120410004.zip twice but am getting a "Archive is either in unknown format or damaged" when trying to extract with either WinRAR or 7zip.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

You don't need to extract the archive. You need to put it in the root directory of the external SD card and run it from there, as described on the first page of this thread.

hi condi
cause of reading about some ICS-bugs, i want to know, if it is possible, after update a prerooted ICS, to flash back to 3.2.1r2 with an prerooted 3.2.1r2 - wich is saved on my pc.(in case i want to)
I'm on 3.2.1r2 at the moment - i have the 3G Version - so i have to wait anyway. Only want to know if it is possible.

hope you understand my bad english

nice work keep on!

greets nutz

I haven't really seen a response for the bricked people. Maybe I missed it. If so, I apologize.

Is this potentially fixable? Or should I be shipping my tablet to a service center? I'm on who can only access recovery. I would love to hear some thoughts.

Thanks.

There are plenty of people that are still bricked. I am one of them.

I am too. If anyone had been and somehow isn't anymore, please let us know how that happened.

I think what sebarkh is saying is that we are not really bricked. I mean, I thought I was not even able to ADB to the tablet, but I could still pull the log file, and the tablet boots to recovery, so there is still a hope, and the tablet itself is not yet an unsusable peace of plastic.

I will keep waiting for Condi's magic, I understand that he has more in life than this forum thread, and he needs some time off. I mean, the guy is freshly married, so let him enjoy his time with his wife, I'm sure he'll not let us waiting forever.

NO...

i've updates to ics via aio tool. now my tab tells me that there is an update. shall i download and install it?
I'm not sure why some people get this update message direct from Sony and most don't. I got the same message, so, I didn't want to risk it. My answer, (IMHO of course,) is:

NO, don't risk it.

Just use the AIO tool again, go to #4 "Tweaks and Mods", then #3 to toggle "OTA system updates" to "Disable." I did, and everything works just fine.

We can then hope that there will be a sweet new XDA developer ROM sometime soon, with an even more powerful kernel. In the meantime, send condi a fine tip for his accomplishments here, and hope that he continues his incredible work on this frustratingly complicated project. You know he deserves it.

The funny thing is I also semi-bricked mine, I only had access to recovery.
But, I made wipe, rebooted a couple of times (it was stucking on sony logo), and finally it booted well...
Still don't know why....

I think the reason one gets the ota notification, other doesn't is quite obvious:
In one region there is an update available and in other there is not any ICS update.

where can I found the ROM you talk about?I have an Italian Device...
Hello

The rom I have won't work for you if your region is set to Italy.
There seems to be a different 3.2.1 rom for every region and then for each device type (16GB no 3G, 32GB no 3G, 16 GB and 3G, 32GB and 3G) so there must be many roms.

The rom that worked for me (16GB and 3G for UK region) was: info.update. sony.net/ST003/nbx03_004/contents/0009/signed-nbx03_004-ota-0042.003.zip (can't post links as I need 8 posts it says!)

As far as I understand it I was able to downgrade to Android 3.2.1 as the ICS rom which is generated using the AIO tool has the backdoor patch in it which lowers the version number. That way it believes that 3.2.1 is newer than the ICS version and it matched the UK region and device type so lets me "upgrade to it". Once back on 3.2.1 I was able to repeat the exploit using the AIO tool and get ICS back.

I think that the ICS rom is only for USA so that if you change your region afterwards it then fails to boot as it no longer matches the expected region and as it doesn't boot you can't get back into the AIO tool and change it back again.

The key to this is looking at recovery.log in the tmp folder inside the AIO folder after recovery fails. From recovery you can run adb pull /tmp to place the files there then open with notepad.
It then gives you info on the expected region and device type after it errors with the E:failure message.

I'm still not sure how you work out which rom you need to get from Sony's servers though but there must be some logic to the numbering.

So I think as long as you used the rom from the AIO tool then you have the backdoor and can "upgrade" to 3.2.1 (after working out the correct rom). However if you have the OTA ICS update from Sony then you will not have the backdoor and will stuck until a newer Sony rom comes out.

Also this is the reason you keep being prompted to update. The backdoor patch has lowered your version number therefore the device thinks a newer rom exists. But if you install this then you will be on the official ICS rom which will be the same except you will lose root.

P.S. Some of what I have written may not be correct so please correct me if anything I have said is wrong.

Robin

Possibly, but I think we are all using condi's AIO to force the US region update model, then updating with root via the AIO only.

I have two Sony Tablet S models, both from the US, but I have not been in the USA since January. One S is 32gb, the other 16gb. The 32gb was/is rooted, the 16gb was not.

When condi's AIO featured the tweak to block updates (>Honeycomb to ICS with the possibility of losing root<,) and knowing that ICS was imminent, I used it. The block worked perfectly. The un-rooted 16gb received the ICS update message as normal, the rooted (and update blocked) 32gb did not. (TY condi!)

So, again, I think that the Sony update notice, that some of us are getting after doing the AIO ICS update, is some sort of holdover "update" message triggered from the previous OS. It's just an intuitive assumption though, nothing to back it up. But now think about how many ghosted glitches and prompts there are when Windows OS versions are updated... hundreds? Each machine never have the same ones either, always random, similar to the situation here.

Ideas?
