j had 5.8.4.7 tried both odin and from rom manager app and no external for me
Should go to http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/ and download "recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.7-d2spr.img".... Rename it to recovery.img and then flash it with mobile odin.

These were the steps that I used and I am able to save to external SD and even restore backups from the unofficial CWM we have been using

Let me clarify.... I am speaking about Sprint only, I can only verify this is working for me on Sprint and the above .img that I listed is for SPRINT ONLY

It might not be restoring because the backups were made with a different version of CWM.

Nope. I have the touch version and there is no choice in the .7 (the newest) version and it won't backup or restore to the sd card. Yes. I made a backup right after flashing the recovery and there was no choice but the internal. I then moved the backup image just made to my external card and tried to restore it but cwm wouldn't find it nor did it give me any options to find it.

Edit: I am wrong. I had more than one backup on my phone and got mixed up. After deleting all my backups, I tried again and found it does backup to my external card by default.

Using sprint variant. Got everything working with touch recovery all for free. Loving it.
Edit. Everything works great except I'm not able to use Rom manager to do anything. Says I need to instal cwm from the Rom manager. But from c w m itself. All is good

No problem! Yea its a great tool. Really glad he updated the app for SGSIII

This is a perfect example of the bummer of a brand new phone. Some things work here sometimes, sometimes not. Im going to leave mine bone stock until the dust settles....

Lol yup. I'm pretty much thinking the same. This phone is great stock IMO.

Ok, I see the download for the free version of Mobile Odin. But, what is a FlashKernel and where do i get it and how do i install it?
I'm sorry I'm using the paid version so idk if there's an option to flash recovery but if there is download CWM recovery for your variant, place it on your internal or external sd (I put mine on internal), rename it to recovery.img and select it for the recovery partition in Mobile Odin then select Flash Firmware

FlashKernel is a related apk you have to install for Mobile Odin to work. The paid version will download and install it automatically. However, for cheapskates like us, you can download from that same thread. Chainfire put them in the 3rd or 4th post. Make sure you download the right one as it's device specific.
