Safestrap question. Do I need to wipe before installing a custom ROM?

I just rooted my Galaxy S5. I'm trying to get a custom ROM to load in SS. It tells me the process is successful, but after flashing the correct kernel back, I reboot and get the stock ROM again. Do I need to wipe the system before installing the custom ROM?
