So recently (even though it's been dead for two weeks) there's been discussion on this thread about how there's a lack of app support etc.

I thought one of the main selling points of sailfish is that Android apps were capable of running with a compatibility layer.

While I love this rom, I'd switch back to the old Titan if it had this compatibility layer. Can someone explain to me why it is not present in this rom?

Because aliendalvik (android emulator used on sfos) is not only nonfree but also:
- licensed for use by jolla
- closed source
- paid
- needs adapting for each device

if i somehow in the future manage to get abox (opensource alternative gives you less integration but newer version) working then youll have android on sfos. but its hard to get it with 3.4 kernel

Okay. Thanks for the explanation. Basically what you're saying is that the Android compatibility layer is not open source like the rest of the system, but there is an open source alternative.

How hard is it to update the kernel on a mobile device? I've only ever done it manually on desktop computers. Is it even possible down here?

Oh boi if it were that simple you would see plenty of them here. You need to reverse engineer and rewrite every blob.

Or use mainline kernel which isnt good too

Bummer. So what you're saying essentially is that the only way without a ****-ton of work to get Android compatibility is to pay jollia the big bucks.

or pay my proffesors to pass my exams lol. its getting more and more possible to get anbox on 3.4 kernel if we try hard enough… i mean ill do everything to bring it to all of my ports so someday…

Hi, first time user here, I couldn't help but notice that the infrared camera at the front of the phone is actually visible with the OS.

Well... I had to go back to lineage... just because i need whatsapp, and i couldn't get it running in any way... It seems that Anbox can be installed on SFOS, but I don't know how, or if it is even possible in your build... do you have some way of getting whatsapp on SFOS? because I really want to use your build... But anyway, this is an awesome proyect! keep up the good work! and sorry for my english. :p
