Holy... I'm a bit overwhelmed. Does that mean that normal Linux Programmes will run on the DeXed phone? I'm especially flirting with the JDownloader that has no good pendant on Android but that would not be my only choice. Will the installer recognise the phone as Linux then? *tipples from one foot to the other* :fingers-crossed:

This is good news, but ... if only it allow us to use linux apps with graphical user interface (GUI), like Crouton for ChromeOS. If it is limited to terminal apps it won't be much better than what we already got with the Termux app (Screenshot of it on my desktop)

Really hoping for the first option, because it could be a game changer!

I was told that you can run any distro of Linux on top of DeX
i.e. Ubuntu.

If I find out more that I can share, I'll let you know! ☺

I've just tried the Ubuntu on Arm build running on DeX, and they say that it is running on the same kernel as Android! I will upload a pic for you later!
That perfectly makes sense. Installing Linux distros on Android using the same kernel is easy, there are installers since the beginning. As Android doesn't use the standard unix folder names (usr, bin, lib...) installing Linux won't overwrite the Android system.
I'm glad Samsung realized that they can build a basic desktop on Android, but for a full mobile workstation they need a more serious base OS. And finally the hardware is there to run a full Linux system without problems.
The main challenge now is to integrate the phone software - like notifications, calls, messages; apps - especially calendar, email and games; and hardware - like using the phone as a touchpad, integrating wifi and bluetooth controls in the Linux desktop.

Anyway, please share with us your impressions too (like usability, user experience...).

So, I should note that DeX will be exactly as it is now, but you can launch Linux and it will launch like any other app. So DeX will still show all of your Android apps fine, but you can run Linux apps on the Linux distro.
I am excited to see if I can use 'Wine' on there, as that will allow Legacy Windows apps to run directly from the phone! :)

Wow very nice ! How come you already have access to the app ?
Is there a beta or developper preview ?

*NEWS UPDATE*

So I can't say anything now. But what I will tell you is that you should NOT! Switch to the Huawei alternative!!!

Samsung has some big updates coming soon that will make Huawei's desktop look useless in comparison.

I've given them a load of feedback from you guys and my apps users, to try to perfect DeX in more ways, but what they have coming soon already looks very good!

Any updates on increasing the resolution ? I really can't see this as a viable solution until that improves.

Thanks

I spoke about that to the person in charge of DeX, and he couldn't say much, but I get the impression that something may be getting tested.
I've mentioned community feedback about resolution, DPI and aspect ratio, and coincidentally, just as I was going on about this, someone interupted our conversation, spoke about a few things and later made a point about resolution/DPI!

I have said to the guys at DeX that this is one of the biggest gripes from the community which I can't create a workaround for with DeX Hub, so it requires action on their side.

I have made a point about my Shift+Space workaround being limited because it doesn't have the ability to inject a space afterwards, so I requested that they look to replace Shift+Space with Ctrl+Shift.
The guys seemed to really take this seriously and taken notes and then had a conversation in Korean (which i couldn't understand) and they mentioned 'Shift+Space' during that conversation. So I assume that will be something that they look to fix soon!
when they do I will remove the override option from DeX Hub as it won't be needed anymore!

I've also made a point that due to limitations DeX Hub is not allowed to allowed to read mouse input events, so i hope that they will provide the tools to fix this so I can provide you with additional functions or more enhanced ways of acheiving certain actions!

Also guys check out this artical from Samsung Press about upcoming plans and goals for DeX:

Hi guys,

I'm responsible for the "Samsung S8 Dex without Dex Station" thread where we succeed in unlocking the feature to none-Samsung Docks.
I've read a lot about the Mirabook lapdock in this thread and I wanted to let you know as a project contributor they gave me a special link with a special price.
A lot of you are complaining about the price, and with this link you'll get your Mirabook at $199 instead of $250 which is good price I think.
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/...droid/x/16210921?secret_perk_token=af29661e#/

For me, the Mirabook is the best solution for those who are too lazy to hack a Motorola lapdock or a Macbook as I've seen :D

Cheers guys

This is at a booth at the developer conference (SDC2017).
This really looks promising, but really ressource demanding at the same time !
Have they talked about the release of the app ? I already signed up but i'm really too hyped. This would mean no more laptop for me and me favorite text editor to code from linux with many plugins (atom) in my pocket !

They haven't given a date yet. But you will hear the news from the link provided! :)

*UPDATE*
Check out the CPU usage when Ubuntu is running on DeX!

That is really awesome! Looking forward to it!
The main reason is, I'm now switching from windows workaround to android.. Samsung dex is now my main machine, and there are improvements I'd hope from them..

To be honest, the main thing I really wish for (besides having a dex-laptop) is the native ability to open dex without dock...
But I think it won't happen since samsung need some cash grab from the dex station.
That is also the main reason I am looking up to huawei (and also its ability to having a mouse and keyboard on the screen).

But hey, as I said, I'm looking forward for another dex update!

I think that since DeX can run any Linux OS in this new feature, Huawei's alternative just isn't comparible!
