Thats because you are connecting the phone which has booted already. You need to put it in download mode by pressing the power+vol down+home key till u get the GT-I5800/5801 logo.

100% not necessary at all. But it shud be somewhat charged at least.

If i can't know, then will it brick my phone if i flash it when it isn't in the downloading mode?

Is it better to flash an ECLAIR ROM and then upgrade via Kies or flash a FROYO ROM directly??

Well on the phone it will show Downloading written...
You can directly flash a froyo ROM...

1) Switch off phone.
2) Press vol-, home, power button together.
3) You ll see Samsung bootlogo and then a screen saying "Download Mode". This is when you ll realize you are in download mode. Then connect phone to computer with ODIN open. It should detect the phone.
4) Follow rest of the steps as given.

Odin detects phone only in download mode
