I could not agree more to the statements. Same as you I have also always chosen the underdogs (loved my HTC Desire HD by the way), but when you seriously start to think who actually are the current bad guys, I would not name Samsung first. IMHO companies should ship their phones with an unlocked bootloader and not penalize the users for unlocking their phones (Sony) or not allow them to do so (Huawei). If it would be still possible to get the unlock codes I wouldn't even think twice which phone to pick. Sadly as things stand I have to confess to consider buying my first Samsung phone. LG would also be an option, but the problem on the latter is as well, that they simply don't allow to unlock every of their phones... Crap...
The decision-making process has finally come to an end: Although I already had acquired an NM card, a 2nd 40W Supercharger and a cover for the Mate with my last months' salary, I've come to the conclusion, that I won't support Huawei and/or they're money making machinery abuses for rooting / unlocking the bootloader.
That said I can't really afford the S10+, but my first Samsung phone will be the S10. Never saw that day coming or even thought it might be possible.
No, I'm still sure the Mate 20 Pro is the best bang4buck out there if and only if you're fine not to root. I also think / predict things will get worse regarding rooting when Huawei is going to step up to EMUI 10. With less and less developers having a Huawei phone I'm not going or willing to take this risk.
I will now get a ~100 euro more expensive, a bit smaller and a bit slower (cpu perf. wise) or a bit faster (gpu perf. + RAM) Galaxy S10, which is a bit better protected (Gorilla Glass 6) and offers a built-in 3.5mm jack and a proper always on display at the cost of a worse camera (at least imho, screw selfies - don't know why people are that selfish anyways) and the lack of one of the best batteries out there with Supercharge 2.0... yep, I'm already sure I'm going to miss the battery and the camera (a bit)...
But you know what? I'm going to laugh when I'll be pressing the OEM Unlocking button in the Dev options and instantly being able to mess around with it (Exynos version, didn't know regarding similar limitations for Qualcomm versions since a few days ago). And I'm pretty sure I won't need to wait long until I have root and am also looking forward to much more custom ROMs.
Good luck to us all, although we're probably in different boats now...
