I ripped the upload apart, and it looks like this is the engineering build from august. If this is malware, then the hacker must have spent a lot of time disguising it as an engineering build, or works for samsung.

In any case, this seems legit. I'm going to flash this to my recovery partition and see how it goes...

I used trident to flash it to the recovery partition and.. it worked. Damn good find. adb shell brings up a root prompt.

Now to see if adding supersu will brick my device... backing up system just in case.

Success. Did not brick my phone, and I have a working root. I'm 98% sure there is no malware on it.

Since this is an engineering build, tampering with system did not cause any kind of lock out on reboot. Only downside is that this is an engineering build.. so it is a little slower.

But other than that, this is the real deal folks! Galaxy s7 active is officially rooted. Good find @activefan01.
Thanks a lot for your knowledge and bravery. Can you please help me with a guide how to do it step by step? :)

this is amazing :) and VERY pleased its confirmed by someone who clearly knows about the system too, Thankyou freddierice, and activefan01 for taking the plunge and initail risk !
so to get some more info on this ...
does this basically unlocked our bootloaders, by injecting the engineering build of it ?
so is/was this file ONLY for the active ? or generic for the s7 qualcomm version ?
and how does this affect the KNOX counter ? or will that only be tripped if we add a custom recovery (TWRP)?
will this work on any build or is it specific to certain versions ?
will this now open up updates for us NON-US AT&T users ? (now we should be able to dump our roms easier)

again Thankyous :)
This is an ATT galaxy s7 active engineering boot.img. Disclaimer: I did not use Odin, but instead leveraged root from trident to flash the image directly. Although this should have the same effect. Also, I only tested this on an ATT qualcomm s7 active device. Not sure if it works on other devices.

Knox is not tripped, but it does recognize this kernel as custom (so no android pay).

(I'm busy rn, but I can answer some of the other questions later tonight)

Beautiful

Two questions:

1. Can you provide a basic list of instructions and tools you used? I would like to write up a tutorial and post a new thread for Root Updates/Problems.

2. Are we able to unroot/update/factory reset the phone?

Thank you all for you help.
Much Appreciated.

All instructions are in link that @activefan01 provided. Just need change write up for s7 active boot file that activefan01 provided to use in modified odin. All else is same.

Here list of files. Hadn't used pg7 file. Just holding in case. Seen newer PI2 firmware but they wanted $10 to download it.

Hadn't tried to unroot/ update / are factory reset.
I didn't even have factory reset on root process.

Any chance you could link to those files? Also, I may be willing to purchase the 10$ firmware and share if you can point me in the right direction.

Can someone post a link to the PK2 firmware please? I am on PE7 now and ready to root here! :)

I am guessing I can't just root with the PE7 firmware?

Update

I have posted links to PI2 and PG7 Firmwares along with instructions. Also, if you attempt a Root please let us know how it went and indicate your success/failure in the poll!

im still on PG7...
newest firmware seems to be PK2 according to the AT&T support ..
wonder if you could now obtain that now, would it then be best to update via Odin first, then root ?? .

While I am on PK2 I haven't seen the firmware anywhere. I even paid for PI2 today just so we had something to fall back on, for what it is worth. PG7 and PI2 only cropped up in the last couple weeks.

However, it would appear that you can just OTA update to PK2, factory reset, and then root to get a clean root. I just am not sure if you'll be able to restore to PG7 or PI2 if something goes wrong. Can anyone weigh in on this?
