Sorry about that, I'm no spring chicken either. I'm sure you know what phone you have, I only based my statement on the firmware name (NK4). If you want try in the future I would glad to try and help !!! You will find as I have that here on XDA there is always someone to lend a hand !!!
Nk4 is the latest sprint note 3 update it came out right after nh7 .

No guarantee it won't bootloop !!! I did on my note 3, you just have to take a step back and keep going. Let me give you an overview, but then you need to follow the individual steps in my first post for each part you need to do.
Ok, the first thing you are going to do is BACK UP ALL THE DATA ON THE DEVICE !!! I.E. music, pics, and videos. These are found on the internal sd card copy and paste them on the desktop of your PC.
Now download Odin to your desktop and extract it. (get the link in 1st post) Download a fresh copy of NH7 4.4.4 to your desktop (get the link in 1st post) and extract it. Now follow the instructions in the first post to flash a stock rom. Let it boot up, if it bootloops take off the back and pull the battery. Let it sit for two minutes, replace the battery and hold the power button, volume up button, and the menu button at the same time. It should boot into a stock recovery, if it DOES use the volume button to navigate to factory reset and push the power button. Let device reboot this will take a couple of minutes. Now go to settings/general/about device and see what version of KK you are running.
If it DOES NOT boot into a stock recovery, and goes back to your custom recovery or bootloops. No problem, pull the battery let it set for a couple of minutes reinstall battery then hold the power button, volume down button, and menu button at the same time and boot into download mode. Go to the first post and flash the rom again it will stick the second time.
Once you are back to bone stock 4.4.4 NH7 just follow the first post for rooting and recoveries. I know this is your friend's device and you don't want to mess it up. So before you try anything check here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ go to SM-G900P NK4 and try the CF-auto root for the s5. The s5 and note 3 are pretty much the same. You can try to flash the root through odin the worst that can happen is it will fail and not install. Then you are back to try and going back to 4.4.4 NH7.
Thanks for the info. I don't think a bootloop is that big of a deal from what you say. I never experienced one. I just don't want to brick the phone, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I kind of figured that, plus the the model number is one letter different too. I would only try it if you are sure I won't lock up his phone using CF Auto root. I've been at this since the 27th, even throw money at chainfire, although I doubted that would do anything. I needed to donate anyway to show some support for his work.

My other question, can I put it back to the firmware he was on? It's was 4.4.4 (NH7). Then I could root his phone if I can't do it as you said in post #14.
Hey btb601 just want to say I stand corrected !!! As bigbabo pointed out to me NK4 is the latest update for the note 3 came out 12/17 right after NH7. I kept getting it confused with NK4 on the s5. I was under the impression the next update for the note 3 was going to be android 5.0 ( lollipop ) . My mind is completely thrashed with the learning curve involved with theming apk's, and learning image design with GIMP !!!!

I understand, you could wait a couple more days and see if chainfire updates his cf-autoroot he is usually very quick about that. It's just that the holidays fell right after the NK4 update.

My Note 4 has the NK2 update waiting on me that came out about the same time. Holding out for the 5.0 stuff. So I guess chainfire is a busy man as the latest for the Note 4 is not showing on chainfire's website.

I have a Note 3 with the NK4 latest update.

"Let's root the phone, there is a couple of ways. First you can download Towel Root here is the link http://towelroot.org/ OR CF-auto root here is the link http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ directly to your device and install. "
The instructions say to install CF-Auto-root directly to the phone, but the CF-Auto-Root file is not in .apk format, only tar.md5 from the website. It also says not to install unless you have an unlocked bootloader.

Am I missing something? Can the CF-Auto-Root be installed directly to the device, and do I have to find out if my bootloader is locked/unlocked? I'm trying to follow the instructions and I appreciate everything you've done to make it easy and straightforward but I can't figure it out.

Im assuming you are on sprint nk4 as i am .download odin version 3.07 on your computer search google for cf autoroot sprint note 3 and download it place all the files on desktop for easy viewing .go to settings ,general, scroll down to about device tap on it than scroll down to build number keep tapping that number till you see small message right under your finger as you tapping its going to say developer option turned on than go back one page and you will see developer option tap on that than check the box that says usb debugging than go back one page tap on security and check the box unknown sources than power off your phone .hold volume down home and power button till you get message in green letters( forgot what the messaage is but it doesnt matter) press volume up to continue and you will see android guy and its gona say download mode .next open odin download folder find odin program inside the folder right click on it and open as administrator once open tap on phone tab and browse to the cf autoroot folder on your desktop click on it it will open another folder where cf autoroot file is click on that it will be added in phone tab of odin than plug your phone in and odin will recognise it ....thats if you have samsung drivers installed on your computer if not you have to do that first my bad i should have mentioned that but its not too late even at this stage .once you got that file in phone tab of odin and your phone plugged in and odin recognised it hit start and let it do its thing once done it will reboot on its own .you will get superuser apk in your app drawer tap on it and follow prompts what it tells you to do probably gona have to update binaries and thats it you got root.let me know if you need any more assistance.

Sorry about that, it is a little confusing. Ok with cf-autoroot there are a few ways to install. First you can download directly to your device, and use an app called "mobile odin" to flash it. You can also use an app called "Fashify" here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify&hl=en OR you can download cf-autoroot to your desktop and use odin to flash it on your device in download mode. OR you can use latest SuperSU zip and flash it in a custom recovery to root. I will change my instructions to reflect this. Enjoy !!!

I have changed my instructions, hopefully they are easier to follow. If you follow bigbabo's instructions you should have no problem.

I don't know that much about "mobile odin", I have read the PRO version works well. I know that Flashify doesn't always play well with certain devices. As for flashing SuperSU in a custom recovery, with a bone stock device flash the custom recovery first. Then flash the SuperSU zip in recovery, it roots the device perfectly. I have done this many times, and checked with root checker. Not my idea just read it somewhere, and tried it. Works great and saves a step, sorry about the misinformation !!!

bigbabo, I run a Sprint Note 3 stock, rooted, NC5 4.4.2 with Philz CWM 6.12.9 I have to admit I am getting old no spring chicken here. So, I moved all personal data to external sd card and booted into custom recovery. Wiped everything system, data, and caches. Booted directly into download mode system status : custom used odin v 1.85 to flash N900PVPUCNC5_XAS.tar. Device booted to a white welcome first time use screen. Skipped everything got to home page pulled battery it's faster, booted into download mode system status : still custom. Pulled battery booted into stock recovery did a factory reset. Pulled battery booted into download mode, odin flashed N900PVPUCNC5_XAS.tar again. Device booted into white welcome screen for first time use, skipped everything again got to home page pulled battery it's still faster. Booted into download mode now system status : Samsung Offical.
Now with a bone stock NC5 Note 3 that is still booted into download mode used odin v 1.85 flashed Philz CWM 6.12.9 once done, device booted into stock rom pulled battery, and booted into custom recovery wiped cache flashed SuperSU v1.94 zip from external sd card. Booted into OS SuperSU icon present downloaded Root checker from play store, says congradulations your device has root access !!! No biggie I needed to freshen up the device been running some themed dailers I made through it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help !!!

No problem, I wish I could find the post it was a while back. I didn't believe it either, the first time I rooted my note 3 was with cf-autoroot hltespr sm-n900p I still have it. Now I just use SuperSu, BUT !!! And I'm not sure, I don't think SuperSu installs busybox, root checker says it's rooted but does it check for busybox ? I remember installing an app and it came back that I did not have busybox installed, and to be honest I have know idea how busybox works. So maybe that's the catch ?
