Earth, for now
How does the screen brightness of the 2 tablets compare as according to online specs I've seen, the S4 has 463 nits and the S5e 600 so in theory the S5e screen should be slightly brighter.

All I can say is that I have my S5e set at about 25-30% brightness for everything except the darkest games—The Room 4, Eyes of Ara, for example. Now, I'm always indoors, so take that in to account.

Got mine yesterday and must say I'm impressed. Debloated with Package Disabler Pro then setup Reicast and Dolphin and they ran with no issues / lag. I originally had the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 which I've used for the past 5 years so I've finally found a worthy replacement :)
I went with the MoKo Case Fit Ultra Thin Slim Shell Trifold Stand Cover and ELTD Screen Protector which has nice round edges / 0.26mm size which gives the tablet a bit more strength as I think bare it feels a bit too thin !

Hi,

I’m considering getting a s5e, would like to ask friends here who have already got one, is this device capable of playing 4k videos? Should i use native player or 3rd party ones like mx player or kodi to have hardware acceleration? And how well does it support hdr?

Thanks!

I've played a 4k HDR video stored locally on the SD card using MX Player without issue.

Also, using YouTube Vanced I'm able to play 4k videos on YouTube (after changing 2 settings).

Thanks for the reply, Geese1!

So does MX Player decodes and display HDR videos correctly? I’ve heard some people say the HDR videos played by MX Player look washed out compared to the stock player.

It looked okay to me, although to be honest I haven't tried the stock player to compare.

I would also be interested in the answer to this - previous tablet and most phones, get used to having some vibration feedback, mainly miss it for when powering on as have to hold power button until the start up screen shows, normally would just hold it until get a vibration from the button. Not a massive issue but if there was an option to enable?

(as a side note the tablet takes a relatively long time to start power on - end up counting to 7 seconds before start up screen appears, previous tablet (LG G Pad 8.3) was only couple seconds before you got vibration from the button and could leave it to power on!! Once started the S5e is quick to complete power on)

so your Tab S5e does not have vibration feedback as well?

No evidence of it at all - must admit when I purchased it I assumed all phones / tablets had vibration feedback - certainly all have had in recent memory (phones that is, not had that many tablets!)
I'm using lte version. There is vibration setting. And I'm using SwiftKey keyboard. Vibration feedback is there.

Nova launcher wallpaper problem and fix

Nova launcher has parallax scrolling, and for now there are problems when setting a wallpaper that can be either fixed or mitigated.

Nova developers explained Samsung changed something in an API.

Solutions:

* Rotate into portrait mode, Not Landscape, Nova launcher is now in portrait mode, then hold empty place at Nova start screen. Setting wallpaper will pop-up. Set the wallpaper from gallery while being in portrait mode for launcher only. Then you have a proper and right wallpaper in both portrait and landscape. At least it works here.

* For parallax scrolling you unfortunately must wait until a real solution is out, but rumor has it you have to use a special modified image.

Setting the wallpaper for the Galaxy S5e tablet for now only works if you rotate into portrait mode while setting the wallpaper image. Otherwise you'll get black bars.

Previous solutions existed and explained to temporarily use Samsung original launcher, which does work but is not necessary with this mitigation.

I hope the parallax scrolling getting fixed too.

Tried "jellyfish-40-mbps-hd-hevc-10bit", it will play it if copied locally in MX Player Pro, I cannot get it to stream as it is challenging for my Wifi. It uses HW+ decoder when playing and plays smoothly. MX Player does not seem to handle HDR yet though.

    Hi guys,

currently hesitating between s4 and s5e, what most preoccupy me is video decoding capabilities regarding hevc (aka h265) 10bits videos.
From spec it's clear s4 can hardware decode 10bit hevc, I have a phone with same snapdragon 835 chipset and such videos are indeed smooth to play on it.
For s5e I'm not sure as chipset spec seem to imply 10bits videos are not hardware decoded and I haven't been able to test it in any outlet yet.

Has anyone here with a s5e already tried to play hevc 10-bits videos like some found on http://jell.yfish.us/ for example?
For those who know mxplayer, are 10bit hevc videos read using HW+ mode or HW or SW?
do "codec infos" apps show Main10 support for hevc?
