Just to get back on this. The panel is actually the exact panel used in the Galaxy S7 Edge. Confirmed by Anandtech.
The S6E3HA3 panel is the one used in the Galaxy S7 Edge. Note 7 uses the S6E3HA5.
That is promising. I am using the two year old Nexus 6 and the readability outside in sunlight (or even near a window) is poor. According to this chart, http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Google-Nexus-5_id8148/benchmarks , my N6 is 270 nits and the 6P is 356. Greatly improved brightness and camera were the two things I really wanted from the Pixel (XL) and it sounds like it will deliver on both.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. The Galaxy S7 has the best display out there right now. Note 7 is slightly better on brightness to support hdr viewing. But that's it.

Note 7 was like reading off paper in direct sunlight, if the pixel even gets close to that I will be happy as even a slightly worse screen would still be perfectly legible in direct sunlight, unlike a lot of the LCD's that wash out bad.

Yeah, the note 7 was remarkable in direct sun. Going back to the 6p was a challenge (I am outside a lot with kids sports). Here is hoping!

OMG, going back to the 1080p LCD panel on my HTC One M7 after using the note was horrible. I don't even bother pulling my phone out when I'm outdoors on a sunny day. It's useless. If the Pixel looks half as good as my Note did in direct sunlight I will be happy enough.

I dropped from my Note to a S3, was the only phone lying around I could use, was like going from a 50 inch 4K TV to a portable. on the plus side it should stop me comparing the pixel to the Note since my frame of reference at the moment is the S3.

EDIT: OP updated with pics & reviews.

I'm "this close" to canceling my pre-order based on early brightness results.
Need to find someone to compare reflectivity though.

One place tested it at 378 nits.
Sure wish these reviewers would explain their testing process.
It's all so subjective.

But yeah, overall it's looking "meh" for sure.
Subjective? A clear black-on-white number?

It's not subjective at all. It's comparable with the data - from the same website - registered for the other devices.

We only can wait Anandtech's review now, but it will probably take a week or two to come.

Yes, subjective for a couple variables.

Were all phones tested in exactly identical environments?
Were all set to "Auto" or "Manual".
Was the same shade of screen-on color used in each test?

There are probably lots of variables to account for and the reviewers don't mention what they are.

I'm not arguing with you, I'm just explaining what I meant. :good:

I think you don't understand.

That nits value it's not to be used "as it is", but it has to be compared to the other values gathered from the same website for different devices. This because the website (PhoneArena in this case) uses the same testing method for all the device in order to create a record of comparable data.

For reference, what's the website that got 378 nits?

How do you know they use the same testing method.
That's why I'm saying it's subjective.
As in, take it all with a grain of salt.

It's in the OP.

I checked the phone today at Verizon store, compared the screen brightness with S7 edge and to my eyes pixel xl is slightly brighter than S7 edge.
See the attached picture, both are at 100℅ brightness, adaptive/auto off.
Thanks for the picture. Your picture does make the Pixel look brighter (or at least whiter) than the S7. My Pixel just arrived, but all I have to compare it to is my N6 which known to be very dim.

Might be brighter with the manual brightness, but it's not with automatic brightness in direct sunlight. Samsung phones only go to their real maximum brightness on automatic brightness in bright light. I was just comparing my Pixel XL and Note 7 outside, and the Note 7 got noticeably brighter in direct sunlight. The Pixel XL was definitely readable though.
