I had been thinking about this phone and it struck me... With the battery appearing to be in the 5 hour realm as an average, does anyone think that it'll tank to an unacceptable level when they start using the photo processor chip? Won't it drain more battery than it does with it off? Just a thought.

A dedicated photo processing chip could be more efficient than using the main SoC, in which case it would use less battery. Or not.

We'll have to see how it works in practice.

If you read up on the visual core that's the whole point in it existing, the fact that it's far more efficient, battery wise and far speedier than using the soc.

Based on what we know so far, we should be lead to believe it'll make our batteries go further.

I'm only getting about 3hr SOT on my pixel 2. I even used it on safe mode for a day and it only seemed to push it up to a Max of about 4hr SOT.
I have AOD off, Bluetooth off, now playing on and adaptive brightness on.
Any advice on what the issue could be?

They have talked about it already the soc photo chip is actually going to save a lot of battery.

I am having soo much issues with this phone and the battery is just one of them. I am actually scared to use my Phone now. I still use my 6p in the days along side it just so that it doesn't drain too fast. the very first time i got the phone i used it for like 1 and a half hours and my SOT was 1 hour and i only lost 2%in battery life i was so excited. I think on that first charge i got close to 5 hours. but that was the first and last time it was so good. now i get 3 hours of SOT and i am not doing anything extreme. no gaming or long snapchat sessions. just Instagram and YouTube mostly. I haven't even used whatsapp on it because I haven't inserted my sim card in it. so its been on WiFi this whole time. also i keep my brightness way down...every phone i have i had to keep the brightness down because i wanted to get good battery.. i was hoping i could be like every one else and get to use atleast 50% brighness. but no such luck.

other issues i have with this phone is that fingerprint fails 50% of the time
front facing camera when in video mode looks messed up ( over processed..as if the face retouching is permanently on)

Impressive! Any particular settings or behavior to achieve that? What screen brightness do you typically run?

Indoors I set brightness around 15-25%
Outdoors I go for 35-50%

I swear this phone gets better battery life as I use it. I think Google is learning my habits lol.

My usage pattern is pretty average. I spend about 2-3 hours SoT web browsing articles with chrome. 15-30 minutes a day SoT camera app.
1-3 hours Mixed social media (Snapchat, insta, Reddit, xda)

I also use a decent amount if streaming with Spotify it usually only uses up around 10% of my battery.

The one thing I don't do a lot is gaming. Some days I wont play a single game. Other days I'll play for like 3 hours, which will bring my total SoT down 1-2 hours.

Completely honest, I've never gone under 5 hours SoT with this phone. The brightness setting absolutely is the largest variable to look at if you're chasing battery life.

Roughly 4.5 hrs over 10 hrs (20% left), lots of camera use (Night shots seem to use more power), videos, music, browsing (Mainly WiFi). Very pleased. My 5x would be at 50% with just under an hour of usage in the morning. Not using always on, All other ambient features on, Adaptive brightness @ 50%, everything is on but Bluetooth and NFC(Don't use it).

Averaging maybe 4.5 hours screen time. Not even enough to get me through the day most of the time (not shown in
the screenshots: the days I had to top up a little just in case). Admittedly, I'm pretty rough on my phones. A 3.5h round trip commute while streaming music on a bluetooth headset will do that, I guess.

Why is your brightness so high if you don't mind me asking.

I've had days with over 4 hours of streaming over Bluetooth and I only get sub 3 hours SoT if I have brightness cranked up to max. 15-35% will work fine trust me! You'll get 5 hours SoT even with all that streaming.

7hrs SOT over 24 hours with 7% to spare after I forgot to plug in last night. Pretty impressive, nice to know I can make it pretty far into the next day in a pinch (usual SOT will be lower).

50% adaptive brightness and always on display disabled. 1.5hrs playing one of those racing games. Only turned on battery saver at 10% right at the end.

The trick to getting better battery in most cases is simply to use your phone more. It's easy to get 6-8hrs SOT within 12hrs of unplugging your phone. It's almost impossible to do over a 48hr period.

    Try for yourself.

Today is overcast and rainy in Portland (surprise)
So I've only had to keep brightness between 20-40%
I am extremely happy about battery life.

45% left with 4 hours 40 minutes SOT. Today has been very average in terms of my usage, light gaming, light social media, light browsing and moderate GPS navigation.

I'm on track to hit 8-9 hours SOT with pretty good usage across the board. Screen legibility at 30% brightness is awesome too! Have had no problems reading text or watching videos/taking pictures. There was one time I was sitting in a cafe directly under a bright light and I had to turn brightness up to 60%. I've still never had to crank it to 100% yet.

How are you people getting such massive SoT? I got 3h 20m with about 19h usage yesterday.
The current status looks like 1h sot in 9h usage (mostly overnight). I had always-on on. Screenshots attached.
I installed naptime now to see if that helps.
How do I check if the battery health is ok? I used accubattery which says about 92% health, is that normal or inaccurate measurement?
    2
This could be because of your usage. Battery life is different in each person. It's not just about the apps...signal...settings etc. How do you touch or swype the screen also matters. The more aggressive you are with the touch screen the more frequencies the kernel raises.

I def agree, SOT tells only part of the story. I just have no idea how people are getting over 9 hours...but I don't doubt it either. After a little over a week of use, I'd say I'm OK with the Pixel 2 battery life. It makes it through the average day with juice to spare. At the very least, close to 4 hours SOT for me, and hitting over 5.5 hours on other days. Sounds silly to say but the more I use the screen (browsing, videos, etc), the more SOT I get. Just wanted to share my experience.
