Screen waking randomly

I've been having a problem recently where the screen will turn on (very dimly) when the phone is sitting idly. It seems to happen frequently when there are notifications. It will sometimes do it repeatedly, even several times a minute. Is there any way to turn this off?

This is as designed and is called Moto Display, open the Moto app and select Display, select "Wake screen when notifications arrive" and then select None, it should stop.

What do you do when you do not have this app anymore?

If you're using Android Lollipop's "Ambient Display" it behaves similarly. It wakes a few times after a notification before staying off. I think it actually wakes 4 or 5 times at a set interval after a notification is received.

Goto Settings / Display, you should see where it gives you an option to turn Ambient display on or off. As far as I know the only option is to turn it off. I don't think it is configurable, but not sure on your ROM.
